I was one of handful of guys that was very critical of that pick when we made it back in 2015. For several reasons. But now he has grown on me, and I think he’s the most underrated player in the entire team. Marquise Goodwin was once considered the most underrated player on our squad, but now it has to be Armstead:

Arik Armstead - DL - 49ers

49ers GM John Lynch was non-committal on DE Arik Armstead's fifth-year option.

Lynch also declined to say what the team plans to do with LG Laken Tomlinson's option. Both players were first-round picks in 2015. Armstead recorded 1.5 sacks in six games last season before landing on injured reserve with a broken hand, the second season in a row he has ended on injured reserve. He is expected to move to the "big end" position on the defensive line this year.

A 6.5M average would put him tied for 14th among safeties.

A 7.5M average would put him at 10th among safeties.

That's a hair under what I might have guessed but quite reasonable if you were a fan of his coming in and think he'll stay healthy.

Arik Armstead - DL - 49ers

49ers exercised DE Arik Armstead's fifth-year option for 2019.

Armstead has struggled with injuries and ineffectiveness three years into his career, managing six combined sacks and missing 18 games over the past two seasons. The 49ers are transitioning Armstead into more of a run-stopper role at left defensive end this year. Solomon Thomas will get more pass-rush chances.
