Eric Reid - DB - Free Agent
49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said the team still has interest in re-signing free agent S Eric Reid.
However, Shanahan would only consider him as a backup to Jaquiski Tartt at strong safety. Shanahan imagines that role wouldn't be enough to pique Reid's interest. The 26-year-old recently filed a grievance against the NFL, claiming teams were avoiding him in free agency because he protested the national anthem. The Titans showed some interest in Reid earlier this summer, but nothing came of it.

Did this guy ever return kicks or punts?

He had been one of the league's most underappreciated players for a long, long time IMO. And yes, my affection for him since his college days probably contributes to that statement somewhat but in my eyes it's true when you watch him with a fair eye.

Never.
I admit. I got that one wrong.

That was a rough WR draft. I liked Devin Smith, and he was a bust. Lots of people liked DGB: same. Kevin White was never healthy, and Devante Parker has been ok but never the guy the Dolphins hoped for. Phillip Dorset was a bust; Nelson Agholor actually turned out better than I thought he would, but he's not exactly a dominant WR.
Cooper's the only one who really lived up to his draft status.

Devin Smith blew his legs out. He goes in the never healthy category.

Disappointed in the cuts. Michael Johnson might've been an interesting piece if the Niners were interested, but he quickly re-signed w/ the Bengals.
Was hoping a decent guard, an overpriced pass rusher or overpriced TE would be cut. Oh well.

He’s on the downside of his career. At this point of his career I think we’re much better off with Armstead. This is coming from a big Michael Johnson fan.

Agreed, but the guy might've provided some decent depth. I'm assuming that's why the Bengals still wanted him.
Was hoping for some bigger names to hit FA, but it's ok because it would've had to have been a huge score for the Niners to even sniff SB contenders this year IMO.

Potentially $70-79 MILLION in cap space this off-season. I will go down to headquarters and protest if they don’t spend.

Who is there to spend it on?

Depending on who re-signs or not...
Ezekial Anzah, Demarcus Lawrence, N. Suh, Sheldon Richardson, former Shanny guard Andy Levitre, Leveon Bell, Ronald Darby, Bradley Roby, Clay Matthews (SAM), Brian Orakpo (SAM), Dante Fowler Jr, Frank Clark, Mychael Kendricks...

Re: 2018 - Official Free Agency
Lot of those guys are too pricey.
Suh is probably expecting another 8-figure salary but he's getting up there in years. He could be like that guy who went from the Titans to the Redskins on a huge playoff contract and didn't do squat.
