49ers signed TE Marcus Lucas, DB Tarvarus McFadden, SS Terrell Williams, WR Jordan Smallwood, OG Najee Toran and OL Christian DiLauro to reserve/future contracts.

They listed Lucas as a TE but he was a receiver at Missouri in the high 230, low 240 range and then shifted to TE after he signed with the Panthers as an UDFA and put on a little bit of weight. Played multiple receiver spots while at Missouri. I liked his projection best when talking about him as a move all over the formation piece because he wasn't someone that was great at getting separation mostly on his own. He's more of a get open with scheme kind of guy and then allow his physical ability with his size take over after he has the ball.

Smallwood is all projection. I really liked how he always seemed to come off as a person. You can root for him I think. Had to redshirt after a foot injury and then tore his ACL trying to come back the next year. Said he never got right in his first full season back. Only had 18 career college catches and didn't latch on with the Chiefs this year. Has some good movement skills for an ACL guy with pretty decent size. I don't hate the signing.

Toran was before and is still a complete waste of time signing IMO.

DiLauro isn't what I want in an OL but definitely projects to a Shanahan system type. Experience at both tackle spots and also has limited time as a guard. Technique problems. Natural physical ability is lacking and major natural strength problems. Don't like his hand usage. Has played a lot and has good movement skills.

Barring someone else being re-assigned or let go, his role would be probably not be much more and probably not a lot less than Martin Mayhew's (Senior Personnel Executive) where he works on various, special projects. Where the difference in the two would be I WOULD GUESS is that Mayhew works on multiple projects that have to do with the salary cap, CBA compliance, and contract negotiations, and I THINK Grigson would also probably be asked to do multiple projects but they would be more along the lines of informational college and pro scouting tasks.

I actually think he's a better eye for talent than Mayhew is. Grigson subscribes to beliefs that are closer to mine than Mayhew does. Mayhew came to the 49ers needing to repair his image a little bit if he wanted to catch someone's attention for a bigger job down the road and obviously I think Grigson comes with that as well.

I have yet to meet too many fans that know how to accurately discuss Grigson (and Mayhew before that) other than the emotional, garbage drivel that usually comes from fans but I say that to advise people not to freak out too much once you read the name Ryan Grigson.

Maybe I'll have to come back and adjust my expectations or admit that I was wrong if he does get a larger than expected role, especially if someone in house is about to leave that we don't know about, but I would caution people to hold off on ranting and raving about stuff they don't know about until they learn far more about what he might be tasked with doing if he joins.

Rare move considering the 49ers did not undergo a head coaching change in the same offseason. A lot of S&C coaches end up becoming available when a new HC takes over or occasionally when his contract is up and that comes with other assistants being allowed to leave as well since most assistant staffs have deals that run for the same length of time. Wright being the only one so far that's been let go makes it fall on the rare side of things.

If they promote from within...

Marquis Johnson was the team's asst. strength & conditioning coach for the last 2 years. Prior to that he had the same position at Tennessee (Volunteers) for 1 season. Prior to that he was with multiple high school programs as a head S&C guy for 6 years. Prior to that he was at Eastern Washington for 3 years in multiple roles.

Dustin Perry was another asst. strength & conditioning coach for the same time period. Prior to that he was an asst. S&C guy for 4 years at Minnesota (Gophers). Like Johnson, he worked with specific positions only. Prior to that he was also a HS coach.

Strength and conditioning coach is seen as a position where younger guys like that can come in immediately and have success. As you would expect, there's far more different types of S&C coaches than there used to be just because of where the science has gone. Obviously there's a ton of overlap as well but whereas a decade and longer ago you had more consensus of how to do the job, today there are so many more different types of S&C coaches and the ways each person handles their program.

Those are really the only two guys I would imagine they would consider to promote from within. So it'll be a young guy most likely unless they go outside the organization, which again isn't guaranteed to be a bad thing for the reasons I listed.

Personally, I still wish they had Mark Uyeyama (with 49ers for 9 years prior to working the last 2 with the Vikings). I subscribe to a lot of the same beliefs he has for human performance based on much of the information he put out there to read while with the 49ers. I was a fan of his. Not that they can just go and pick him back up. I'm just saying he was my kind of guy while he was with the team.

Not going to pretend like I know a ton of guys who have recently been made available so we'll see what happens. Johnson and Perry are two to look into if you're interested in S&C.

Looks like we will be getting a new DB coach. I wonder if he was told it was time to find a new job.

Or they'll just promote Daniel Bullocks to the head job. In terms of years doing it, he only has been in coaching for 6 years (2 years at N. Iowa as DBs coach, 1 year at Eastern Michigan coaching cornerbacks, 1 year as the asst. DBs for the Jaguars, and then with the 49ers for two years as asst. DBs). Had a 3-year NFL career with the Lions prior to that (missed a full season in '07 for one of those three).

That would fall on a quicker than most promotion if that's what they decide to do, and I would probably bet against it, but we will see.
