I remember arguing with folks that Jamie Winborn wasn't suddenly an all-world talent after the 2004 season in which he "blew up" for 61 tackles, 4.5 sacks, 7 PDs, 1 INT, and 3 forced fumbles. I also remember arguing with people that continued to argue that he should still be on the team and starting after he became a toxic individual in the locker room after Nolan showed up and recognized the toxicity and quickly decided he was going to move on from him.
He would then to go on to rub Jack Del Rio and Brian VanGorder the wrong way in Jacksonville for a season, which resulted in him being cut again. That was followed by another season with the Buccaneers in which Jon Gruden hyped him up as he so often does at the start, but then Monte Kiffin said he wasn't going to play him in favor of Ryan Nece (Ronnie Lott's son, who used his mother's maiden name to make his own name for himself), and then was released again after the season.
He would go on to play for 3 more teams (Broncos for 2 years, Texans for 1, and Titans for 2), mostly as a backup. Quite possibly the 2nd best year of his career was during one of those Broncos years in which he made 11 starts, had 99 tackles, 0.5 sack, and a ridiculous 11 PDs (I'll give applause for his Denver season). No more than 3 starts in any of those other seasons.
Fun days.

Ah, the Mooch years. I think back then Niner fans just assumed the guy wearing red & gold was going to be great because that was usually the case. And I think they saw greatness where mediocrity existed (
Jeff Garcia).
The
Jeff Garcias of the world are like a Super-Bowl Vaccine. You're guaranteed not to win one (see
Andy Dalton,
Dak Prescott,
Kirk Cousins), but they keep fooling people into hope & hang on to a job. They're the worst.
Speaking of Mooch, he was almost as overrated as George Seifert.

Wait a second... I've erroneously thought "He Hate Me" was Jose Cortez for the last 20 years???
How did I mix that up?

There are few football players who still give me more rage than Jose Cortez.
The saddest funny thing about it? They replaced him with Owen Pochman for a brief time, who actually might've given me similar levels of rage.
Pochman in 2003
1-1 from 20-29
3-8 from 30-39
4-5 from 40-49
0-1 from 50+
His Tampa Bay game that year (which they still won)? 31 yard FG blocked, 50 yard FG missed before halftime, 39-yard FG blocked, 27-yard FG no good
8-15 with a long of 48 yards and 9-10 on XPs (obviously before it was moved) in 2003.
------
Fact: Pochman has since become a real estate agent, written a book, and dated an actress/'01 Playboy Playmate of the Year.

I remember Cortez essentially having an extra point area (2 yard line) FG try. He shanked it to the left so bad, it almost went in the tunnel.

They could sign Zach Mettenberger (their actual college QB) to challenge Drew Stanton for that backup job (Tyrod Taylor is headed elsewhere).
Mettenberger is in the AAF and now starting for Memphis (coached by Mike Singletary). Believe it or not Christian Hackenberg started their season over him but was benched after just 3 starts (0 TDs, 3 INTs, 2 fumbles).
LSU's passing game in 2013? Landry - 75 for 1,172 and 10 TDs. Beckham - 57 for 1,117 and 8 TDs. Their next most productive receiver? Jeremy Hill with 18 for 181 and 0 TDs.
I was a very strong in like for Beckham and I couldn't have been more against Landry as a prospect. Did NOT like him at all.
Since then, Landry has become one of my favorite receivers to listen to. The man is brilliant and really gets it when it comes to player development and incorporating young people into a locker room.
I don't know if he's exactly suited to coach one day but I could see him being an excellent Director of Player Engagement one day for a team. Not that he'd want to do that but his personality and make up seem outstanding for that type of role when he's done.
