PJ Fleck, recruiting up a storm!!!

Here's a fun coincidence. Today I was tossing out some old paper documents I had saved (yep, from the days when some of what I kept was on paper), and on one page was some camp observations and among them was how Fleck was flying around the field and catching everything thrown his way.

MAALIK MURPHY
QB, HIGH SCHOOL PLAYERS

Uncommitted 2022 QB Maalik Murphy had the longest throw at the Steve Clarkson Quarterback Retreat this weekend.

Clarkson's QB Retreat is unique in that it includes both high school and college quarterbacks. On hand from the collegiate ranks this year were the likes of Trevor Lawrence, Shea Patterson, Hunter Johnson and Jalen Hurts, among many others. Despite all the luminaries on hand, it was the 6-foot-4, 205-pound Murphy -- with just one year of high school ball under his belt -- who uncorked the longest pass of the weekend, letting loose for 74-yard bomb. UCLA's Dorian Thompson-Robinson and Clemson pledge DJ Uiagalelei tied for second-longest with 72-yard flings of the ball. As for youngster Murphy, while his recruitment is still in its infancy, he does plan on doing a little bit of diligence later this summer, with unofficial visits to Georgia and Arkansas potentially in the cards. Ohio State and Oregon are two other programs which he would like to check out.

I really like this kid. Slowly creeping up on Jeudy as my #1 rated receiver in next year’s class:

LAVISKA SHENAULT
WR, COLORADO BUFFALOES

Per Pro Football Focus, Colorado junior WR Laviska Shenault led the PAC-12 in yards per route run.

Shenault (6'2/220) recorded 3.44 yards per route run, the most in the PAC-12 by a wide margin. The next closest qualifying wideouts were USC WR Amon-Ra St. Brown with 2.65 yards per route run followed by USC WR Michael Pittman Jr. who averaged 2.28. Shenault proved to be a special talent last season after racking up 1,011 receiving yards on 86 receptions as a sophomore. Another productive season should keep him in the conversation of the top wideout selected in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Tyrell Shavers should have been on that list as well IMO. He has a lot of talent but for some reason he hasn’t been able to land a starting spot:

HENRY RUGGS
WR, ALABAMA CRIMSON TIDE

Bleacher Report's David Kenyon ranks Alabama as the team with the best receiving group for the 2019 season.

Honestly, if you expected anything but the Crimson Tide to rank at the top of this list, you probably don't watch a ton of college football. Not only does Alabama have arguably the top receiver -- and maybe top prospect -- at the position in Jerry Jeudy, they also have Henry Ruggs, Jaylen Waddle and DaVonta Smith at the position. All four of these guys not only have a chance to play in the NFL, but be early picks as well. This group is just stupid good.

I saw a couple games that he played in his sophomore and junior years respectively. The kid can play his ass off. But he lacks something in his game that I can’t pinpoint holding him back to be a true elite player.

TYLAN WALLACE
WR, OKLAHOMA STATE COWBOYS

Oklahoma State junior WR Tylan Wallace was named a preseason first team All-American by The Sporting News.

Wallace (6'0/185) was earlier this summer named to Athlon's preseason first team. The big-play wideout erupted for an 86-1491-12 receiving line last season while averaging a hearty 17.3 yards per reception. We still don't know who will be throwing Wallace the ball -- former Hawaii QB Dru Brown and redshirt freshman Spencer Sanders are the two names to watch in August camp -- but assuming Oklahoma State can settle on a dependable starter, Wallace should be able to put up all kinds of impressive marks this fall.

JAKE FROMM
QB, GEORGIA BULLDOGS

247Sports analyst predicts that the SEC will have two Heisman Trophy finalists: Georgia junior QB Jake Fromm and Alabama junior QB Tua Tagovailoa.

This isn't a particularly bold prediction, as Tagovailoa was considered to be the favorite for much of last season before finishing second to Oklahoma's Kyler Murray. And in the case of Fromm (6'2/220), he's been projected by some to be the top pick in the 2020 NFL Draft should be decide to forego his final season of eligibility at the conclusion of the 2019 campaign. As a sophomore Fromm was excellent, completed 67.3% of his passes and throwing for 2,749 yards and 30 touchdowns with just six interceptions. Georgia's 2018 did not end the way the team would have wanted, with the Bulldogs losing to Alabama in the SEC title game and Texas in the Sugar Bowl. But the team still won 11 games and is poised to at minimum make a run at another SEC East title.

J.K. DOBBINS
RB, OHIO STATE BUCKEYES

Ohio State junior RB J.K. Dobbins was named a preseason second-team All-American by Sporting News.

Dobbins (5'10/214) has largely taken a backseat in pub behind the likes of Jonathan Taylor and Travis Etienne this offseason, but Sporting News is not giving up on the junior, not quite yet. It isn't even that Dobbins had a bad season in the fall -- he rushed for 1,053 yards and 10 touchdowns -- more just a kind of ho-hum forgettable one. The excitement which he generated in Columbus during his 1,403-yard freshman campaign more or less dried up. Part of this was the presence of Mike Weber, but we would argue that Weber's impact should be downplayed. Mike Weber was not the reason that Dobbins' saw his YPC mark fall from 7.2 to 4.6 a year ago. And even beyond that, he is far from the only running back in the country who has to deal with split carries. Dobbins needs a rebound showing this fall, especially if he plans on declaring for the draft.

He had a pretty good year for Cal for a true freshman:

DEMETRIS ROBERTSON
WR, GEORGIA BULLDOGS

Athlon Sports believes Georgia redshirt junior WR Demetris Robertson is a wild card.

Robertson (6'0/190) is one of the biggest wild cards in the conference. A former five-star recruit, Robertson has been a disappointment thus far but has plenty of opportunity for a true breakout season in 2019. The Bulldogs lost lots of talent at receiver and Jake Fromm elevates his teammates. Robertson is a sleeper 2020 NFL Draft prospect. We just have to go back to 2016 at Cal to find tape to watch.

JERRY JEUDY
WR, ALABAMA CRIMSON TIDE

Bleacher Report's Matt Miller mocked Alabama junior WR Jerry Jeudy to the No. 5 overall pick.

Jeudy (6'1/192) is Miller's top prospect in the class, calling him "special" with "dynamic and smooth" route-running. And it's true. Jeudy is a rare receiver prospect with top-five overall pick potential. In fact, the betting markets give Jeudy 30-to-1 odds of being the first overall pick. NFL Media's Daniel Jeremiah compares Jeudy to Robert Woods.

HENRY RUGGS
WR, ALABAMA CRIMSON TIDE

Alabama junior WR Henry Ruggs is "widely considered the most competitive kid in the program by people in the building."

This quote comes from Senior Bowl director Jim Nagy, who is as plugged in as they come. Ruggs (6'0/183) reportedly will do well in the pre-draft process, especially since he has verified 4.3 speed. One of the most explosive athletes in the country, Ruggs averaged 16.1 yards per catch last year, primarily operating as an outside receiver. However, NFL Media's Daniel Jeremiah believes Ruggs can play both outside and in the slot. Consider Ruggs a Day 2 prospect with a chance to break into the first round.

Maybe my favorite WR in this talented class:

LAVISKA SHENAULT
WR, COLORADO BUFFALOES

Colorado junior WR Laviska Shenault said, "I'm pretty sure I will want to leave" for the 2020 NFL Draft.

This is widely expected, but it's always good to hear it come directly from the source. Shenault (6'2/225) was on a Heisman-candidate pace last year before injuries slowed him down late in the year. He'll be looking to improve upon his 86-1,011-6 receiving line in 2019 with Steven Montez back at quarterback. Shenault has the size, speed, versatility, character, and production of a typical first-round pick. Even in this stacked 2020 class, Shenault sticks out as a potentially special talent.

CHASE YOUNG
DL, OHIO STATE BUCKEYES

Ohio State junior EDGE Chase Young was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Young (6'5/265) currently has the fourth-best odds of being the first overall pick in next year's draft. Quarterbacks Tua Tagovailoa and Justin Herbert are the favorites. If the team with the first overall pick doesn't need a quarterback and can't find a trading partner to move down, Young should definitely be in the mix for a No. 1 overall selection. Young has the size and athleticism of a top edge prospect, and he should take another step forward in terms of production as a junior in 2019. Last year, Young had 10 sacks and 14.5 tackles for loss.

JUSTIN HERBERT
QB, COLLEGE PLAYER

Oregon QB Justin Herbert has the second-best odds of being the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

The betting markets currently give Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa a 66.7% chance of being selected with the first pick, while Herbert sits at 20%. Tagovailoa and Herbert are the consensus top-two draft-eligible quarterbacks entering the college season with Georgia QB Jake Fromm coming in at No. 3. Other names to know with first-pick consideration are Ohio State DE Chase Young and Alabama WR Jerry Jeudy.

Good that we reached for two WRs on the second day this year, in what was a decent, good depth but not great top-end, draft. I'm sure none of the DBs that went in the third and fourth this year will pan out, though....

Hurts has never shown anything on the field as a passer that would give me reasons to believe he has the tools to be an NFL QB:

JALEN HURTS
QB, OKLAHOMA SOONERS

Oklahoma HC Lincoln Riley said senior QB Jalen Hurts hasn't won the starting job.

This is more than likely just a little motivation for Hurts, but it's still news given the scope of the position. Oklahoma quarterbacks have won back-to-back Heisman Trophies, and whoever wins the job -- once again, it's still likely Hurts -- is expected to be one of the most productive players in the country. If things break his way, Hurts should be in the mix as a 2020 NFL Draft prospect with unique experience and athleticism on his side. However, improvements as a passer will determine where, or if, Hurts is drafted.

DYLAN MCCAFFREY
QB, MICHIGAN WOLVERINES

Michigan HC Jim Harbaugh said that he plans on playing both senior QB Shea Patterson and redshirt sophomore QB Dylan McCaffrey this season.

"We may re-define what a starter means — we want to get both of them on the field, either together or at different times. The way it stands now, that could happen in every game," Harbaugh said. To all of this, temperature us lukewarm. This is not a Kelly Bryant-Trevor Lawrence situation, as McCaffrey does not realistically have a chance to start this coming season barring injury to Super Shea. McCaffrey has attempted just 15 career passes, all of which came last season. He could certainly see extended action in blowouts this fall, but beyond that, we're a little dubious as to just how much work he is going to see running the offense in competitive games.

JONATHAN TAYLOR
RB, WISCONSIN BADGERS

Wisconsin redshirt senior LB Chris Orr said that junior RB Jonathan Taylor is completely focused on the coming season, rather than a potential NFL Draft declaration.

Per Orr, Taylor does not talk about the NFL unless he is directly asked about it. We imagine that some pro hopefuls are much less quiet about their NFL futures. The redshirt senior linebacker praised Taylor's work ethic and leadership in drills and practice. You can mentally link Orr and Taylor in your mind by degrees, as both are upperclassmen expected to set the tone for the team on their respective sides of the ball. Earlier this week, Wisconsin HC Paul Chryst expressed excitement over the possibility of watching Orr blossom with linebackers TJ Edwards and Ryan Connelly no longer on roster.

STEPHEN CARR
RB, USC TROJANS

USC HC Clay Helton said junior RB Stephen Carr has his "burst back."

Carr (6'0/205) has been hampered by various injuries and it's cost him in both freshman and sophomore seasons. If Carr is healthy -- that appears to be the case -- then he's a breakout candidate, especially if the offense clicks under a new offensive coordinator. Carr was once thought of as a high-ceiling back, but it hasn't materialized... yet. The junior is expected to work in a committee with Vavae Malepeai, who was absent (undisclosed) at Tuesday's practice.

If 49ers are drafting in the top 10, they better look at replacing Kyle and Lynch.
