USC HC Clay Helton said junior RB Stephen Carr has his "burst back."

Carr (6'0/205) has been hampered by various injuries and it's cost him in both freshman and sophomore seasons. If Carr is healthy -- that appears to be the case -- then he's a breakout candidate, especially if the offense clicks under a new offensive coordinator. Carr was once thought of as a high-ceiling back, but it hasn't materialized... yet. The junior is expected to work in a committee with Vavae Malepeai, who was absent (undisclosed) at Tuesday's practice.

KJ HAMLER
WR, PENN STATE NITTANY LIONS

Reading Eagles' Rich Scarcella believes Penn State redshirt sophomore WR KJ Hamler is "poised for a big season."

Hamler (5'9/176) redshirted as a freshman in 2017 but came on strong in 2018 as a redshirt freshman. He racked up 1,417 all-purpose yards and is an explosive playmaker with the ball in his hands. HC James Franklin said, "He's just one of those guys who's a natural football player." He's received praise from multiple coaches and players including expected starter Sean Clifford who added, "Having him makes the game a lot easier for the quarterback." Hamler will look to contribute more on offense this season after recording 43 receptions for 754 yards last season.

So glad to have Miles Sanders out of the backfield. Not because he's not a good RB, he'll probably be average in the NFL, but Franklin had way too much faith in him. Ricky Slade and KJ Hamler are going to put on a show this year

Espn cited some eye popping numbers the other day about how much impact Jeudy has on their offense, opening up the running game because of his threat over the top.

ALBERT OKWUEGBUNAM
TE, MISSOURI TIGERS

Pro Football Network's Tony Pauline gives Missouri redshirt junior TE Albert Okwuegbunam a third-round grade heading into the 2019 season.

It's the top grade of any Missouri player. Pauline notes that others are higher on Okwuegbunam -- we've seen some grade him as the top tight end in this class -- and he notes that there are things he likes such as his ability to move around the field and the ability to catch the ball like a receiver. His concerns, however, come in Okwuegbunam's pursuit of academics; noting that he would like to become a doctor someday. It's understandable to have concerns about whether football is a priority for the tight end, and teams will want to be sure before taking him highly.

ANDREW THOMAS
T, GEORGIA BULLDOGS

ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. writes that Georgia junior T Andrew Thomas "doesn't make mistakes."

Nobody's perfect, but maybe Thomas is. Kiper believes it's possible -- without actually predicting it -- that 2020 is the year of the tackle resurgence, and he has the 6-foot-5, 320-pound Bulldog lineman at the top of that list. Kiper also notes that Thomas has long arms and good feet, and the fact that he's played well at both left and right tackle is a nice added benefit. Don't be surprised if Thomas is the top drafted lineman in 2020.

A.J. EPENESA
DL, IOWA HAWKEYES

ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. believes that Iowa junior EDGE A.J. Epenesa has the ability to be dominant in 2019.

Kiper ranks Epenesa fifth in his rank of the top prospects in the 2020 draft class, and second among all defensive ends behind Ohio State's Chase Young. As Kiper notes, the fact he was able to put up 10.5 sacks is all the more impressive when you consider that Epenesa was a part-time player; getting 'only' 30 snaps a game. As he writes in his summary: "With great size and length, Epenesa has the skill set to be dominant against the run while pitching in double-digit sacks."

IRV SMITH
TE, MINNESOTA VIKINGS

According to ESPN's Courtney Cronin, the Vikings have "big plans" for second-round TE Irv Smith.

Smith has been a standout at Vikings' camp, impressing the team's coaching staff with his versatility. Already regarded as a strong pass-catcher, the Alabama alum has also shown to be a capable blocker, continually opening up holes in the run game with his 6'2," 242-pound frame. Smith isn't close to toppling Kyle Rudolph on the team's tight-end depth chart, though coach Mike Zimmer has suggested the Vikings will employ more 12 personnel this year. Smith isn't in the redraft conversation yet, but he's certainly a name to know for dynasty purposes.

Damn, dude could have definitely gone in the top 5. Big chance that he won’t declare for the draft an opt to return back to Tuscaloosa for the 2021 season.

TRAVIS ETIENNE
RB, CLEMSON TIGERS

Pro Football Focus notes that Clemson junior RB Travis Etienne forced nine missed tackles on Thursday against Georgia Tech.

In case you somehow missed it, Etienne was ridiculous on Thursday; rushing for 205 yards and three touchdowns, and doing it on 12 carries. What's even more remarkable about this statline is that Etienne ran for negative yardage on his first two carries. On top of the missed tackles, the junior had five runs of 10-plus yards, six of his runs went for first downs or touchdowns. Yep. He's good.

STEPHEN CARR
RB, USC TROJANS

USC junior RB Stephen Carr is listed as co-starter along with redshirt junior Vavae Malepeai on the team's Week 1 depth chart.

Carr (6'0/205) enrolled at USC as a heralded four-star recruit in the 2017 class, but he has not been able to live up to his initial promise with the Trojans. In large part due to injuries. The junior failed to top 400 yards rushing in either of his first two seasons on campus. It would probably be unwise to give up on Carr altogether -- and USC HC Clay Helton did say in the spring that he looked to have his bounce and burst back -- but at this juncture, it's a "we'll believe it when we see it" kind of deal. Carr is technically draft-eligible this winter, but his career has so underwhelmed to this juncture that he is going to need a big (healthy) campaign this fall to justify a declaration.

TYLAN WALLACE
WR, OKLAHOMA STATE COWBOYS

Oklahoma State junior WR Tylan Wallace collected five receptions for 92 yards and pair of touchdowns in Friday's 52-36 win at Oregon State.

Wallace (6'0/185) and RB Chuba Hubbard certainly did their part to carry the Oklahoma State offense, making it a successful first start for Spencer Sanders under center. Over his past five collegiate performances dating back to Bedlam last November, Wallace has managed three multi-touchdown performances. He'll look to keep the impressive streak going when FCS McNeese pays a visit to Boone Pickens Stadium next Saturday in the home opener.

LAVISKA SHENAULT
WR, COLORADO BUFFALOES

Colorado junior WR Laviska Shenault registered three receptions for 48 yards and a touchdown in Friday's 52-31 victory against Colorado State.

Shenault (6'2/224) also registered three runs for 35 yards. The Rams did a pretty decent job holding the star receiver at bay, forcing others to beat them. It was a far cry from his opening performance of 2018 when Shenault rolled up 211 receiving yards and a touchdown on 11 grabs. Nebraska is on deck next Saturday. Shenault posted 10 grabs for 177 yards and a touchdown in Lincoln on Sept. 8, 2018 in last season's meeting with Big Red.

JONATHAN TAYLOR
RB, WISCONSIN BADGERS

Wisconsin junior RB Jonathan Taylor ran for 135 yards on 16 carries with two touchdowns and caught two passes for 48 yards and two scores in a 49-0 thrashing of South Florida on Friday.

Well, they said they wanted to get Taylor more involved in the passing game, and they did just that. Oh, he's still pretty good at running the football, too. He opened the scoring with a 37-yard scamper where he went virtually untouched, and then he added two receiving scores from 36-yards out and 12-yards, respectively, near the end of the first half. He then ran in from 38-yards out just two minutes into the first half, and his day was done. Scouts have to love seeing Taylor involved in the throwing game -- even if it was just two catches -- because they know what he can do between-the-tackles. Another huge game is all but guaranteed when the Badgers face Central Michigan next Saturday.
