I thought it was interesting that McFarland described Bosa's strengths as great fundamental technique, especially the hand battles.

But he said he's not among the elite athletes at the position.

Sure he's probably not a fast twitch edge rusher who explodes off the snap like Von Miller in his prime. But hard to imagine Bosa being drafted #2 if he was merely a technician.

I'm sure he's a beast able to use leverage against bigger tackles not only on technique but being strong and fit enough to go the whole game.

Bosa isn't an elite athlete based on combine measurables. He's a good athlete, but not among the best. That said, he's really strong, has good quickness, and plays with great leverage. Combine that with his elite hand usage, and he's awfully tough to block.

Hope he's fast enough to chase down someone like Wilson.

Aldon could do that.

He could but he didn't do a ton of it because almost no one does a ton of it consistently. In 8 games he had 7 TFL, 7 QB hits, and 4 sacks on Wilson. And that was with insane help and scheme around him. Bosa doesn't have insane help or scheme around him (yet).

In regards to Wilson, more so than most QBs, I care far more for what the defense collectively does big picture in rattling him than what one star can pull off because not a lot of stars have done it consistently on him.

One of my favorite guys to watch vs. Wilson has been Chandler Jones over the years. In 8 games vs. Wilson he has 8 TFL, 15 QB hits, and 9.5 sacks on Wilson. I don't have the memory bank to put together a list of guys who've had the most success against Wilson, but Chandler would be one of the very first, if not the first name I'd throw out there on how one guy can try to terrorize Wilson on a football field. But still, I care far more of how you bottle him up team defense wise than one individual.

I just remember one play where Wilson rolled out to the left and thought he could evade Aldon to buy more time and Aldon tackled him and forced a fumble.

Aldon was also great at setting the edge.

Would be interesting to see who else was on the line when Chandler Jones compiled those numbers. Was he playing with Calais Campbell? Or were some of those numbers compiled when he was with the Pats?

One thing Aldon didn't have was a great pass rusher from the other side. But at some point, the 49ers started blitzing Willis and Bowman up the gut, especially some delayed blitzes which were effective. Aldon may have been gone by that point though. But man those guys had some violent collisions on those blitzes.

Clearly. I always said Nick Bosa's a good player who's better than his brother Joey but not as good as guys like Garrett or Chubb (who's out for the season), but I have to admit he's exceeding my expectations already. Health was also one of my biggest concerns with him.

The thread title alone is enough to give me years of grief if I end up being wrong about this one.

Garrett and Chubb were both picked before the 49ers had a chance to draft either of them.

So they shouldn't have drafted another DE when they got the chance?

No, they should’ve signed Justin Houston & drafted Q. Williams (or that was my plan).

If Bosa keeps this up into the postseason, I’ll eat my words.

That might not have been a bad plan, though I'm not sure what kind of contract Houston got. Of course they paid Ford too so it would have been tough to give out two big contracts to DEs in the same offseason. At least Bosa is on a rookie deal.

If they drafted Q. Williams, I guess they would have let Bucker go in free agency, which might not be a bad decision.

As it is, they may are not likely to keep Armstead, another #1 pick.

Ballsy of you to say that at this point rather than before the season.

He's playing great but teams will adjust. This kind of rate is unsustainable.

He's doing some bull rushes and that has to take a toll, to push into bigger tackles over the course of a season.

Remember how excited we were by the Aldon and Justin combo? Aldon was piling up sacks at a crazy rate.

Even before he got into trouble off field, teams caught on and his pressure rate went way down.

So tamp down expectations.
