19-20 playoff field

Post#1 » by SeaNinersFan » Tue Dec 31, 2019 11:10 pm

I was sitting at work today, because someone had to be there, with nothing to do and thinking that the Niners had a pretty rough back half of the year and how did it compared to the rest of the playoff teams. For simplicity, everything here has to do with the last 8 games of the year. I feel that after 8 games every team starts to deal with injuries, so depth really starts to have an impact.

team: aggregate W-L-T/winning % of opponents/record/record vs. teams that ended the season with a winning record.

AFC:
Ravens: 65-63-0 / .508 / 8-0 / 4 -0
Chiefs: 68-60-0 / .531 / 6-2 / 2-2
Patriots: 69-59-0 / .539 / 4-4/ 1-3
Texans: 71-57-0 / .555 / 5-3 / 2-2
Bills: 67-61-0 / .493 / 4-4 / 0-2
Titans: 40-58-0 / .547 / 5-3 / 2-2

NFC:
49ers: 83-44-1 / .648 / 5-3 / 4-2
Packers: 51-76-1 / .398 / 6-2 / 1-1
Saints: 60-68-0 / .469 / 6-2 / 1-1
Eagles: 55-73-0 / .430 / 5-3 / 0-2
Seahawks: 71-56-1 / .555 / 5-3 / 3-2
Vikings: 69-59-0 / .539 / 4-4 / 0-3

A few things that surprised me:
1) The 49ers had the roughest back half of the year by far and had the 2nd best record vs. teams that ended the season with a winning record (4-2)
2) Only 3 playoff teams have winning records against winning teams, I expected more.
3) Green Bay had a cake walk the last half. The only team with a winning record that they beat was the Vikings who were winless vs. teams with a winning record.

Thanks for sharing. That's interesting. I knew the Niners had a brutal second-half schedule, of course. They played the AFC's #1 seed, and and NFC's #2, #3, and #5 - but #4 by schedule - seeds. They played a historically difficult three-game stretch against teams that started that stretch 8-2, two on the road, and went 2-1. They let the Atlanta game get away from them, and that sucked, but the team has been balling. I didn't realize it was that much tougher than the competition, though. Almost .100 points above the next highest team, and .250 over the Packers. That's kind of crazy.

I'm not surprised to see that GB played an easy schedule, but surprised to see it was THAT easy. I think it's a joke they're the two seed, but I'll take it as the Saints are clearly the more dangerous team and will have to go to GB to advance. That's the NFL for you, though. The Bills have struck me as paper tigers this year, so not a shock their opponent win percentage and success against good teams is low.

Great post SeaNiners! We should make this the official non-49ers playoff games thread.

Yeah before they played Seattle in the first game, they were facing 3 or 4 teams which were like 9-2 or something like that. Probably the most difficult schedule at that point in the season.

Would rather see Seattle lose in the WC, though I'm not sure what that would mean for who comes to Levi's for the Divisional round.

Unfortunately, Seattle plays the 49ers as well as any of the NFC teams, though on paper NO and GB are better teams.

The trendy pick is to pick the Titans over the Pats but those Titans players don't have playoffs experience so Pats will probably find a way to win. Houston and Buffalo is hard to figure out. Houston has key players out despite Watt coming back. They have a tough playoffs history but again, it could be a lot of the Bills players not being used to playoffs intensity which gives the Texans the edge.

But I think the likely AFC champion looks more formidable than the other NFC teams. Ravens have had a huge season but I think KC is really coming on and their offense is a greater juggernaut (speedy WRs, Kelce and Mahomes throwing to all of them) than the Ravens, unless Lamar continues to rip off 40 yard runs in the playoffs.

Lamar getting exposed? Trying to hit big plays instead of running with it led to the fumble and now game is out of reach.

Ravens defense blitz happy, easily beat.

Also the arrogance of going for it on 4th down.

But I think Chiefs are the more dangerous team and would have bEaten the Ravens anyways.

"Getting exposed" may be taking it a bit too far to me; any team can be beaten on any given day, particularly with a few turnovers and big plays. The Titans have taken advantage of both tonight.

Titans will be a tough match-up for anyone, including us. Henry is the size of Kittle; he's a load to deal with since no DB and few LB's can tackle him one-on-one. They have a very strong defense and Tannehill makes plays when he needs to. That is a recipe that should sound very familiar to Niner fans....
