2021 Season news/notes/discussion thread
We had an offseason thread, so I figured we could use a season thread to discuss 49ers team related topics.
Thread is not meant to be used as game threads, each game should have its own specific thread/discussion. This thread is more geared for general wraparound discussion during the season. Team transactions, injury news, practice reports, player performances, potential trade targets, general team outlook, etc.

Re: 2021 Season news/notes/discussion thread
I'm sure most of us could be knocked over with a feather after hearing this. He'll now miss at least the first 3 games, but I wouldn't be shocked if the earliest we'll see him is after the week 6 bye.
Can't really make much of an argument that they shouldn't have kept Jalen on the 53, because the other WR options were incredibly underwhelming.
However, you can certainly make a case that they definitely should have done more to bring in talent at WR. Outside of the top 2 guys, they have nothing but complete question marks and washed old vets. On top of that, not only are the top 2 guys not great bets to play 17 games, but they both are also pretty young and not well established.
I'll never know why they decided to draft 2 RB's this year. They weren't flush with picks to start with, and already signed Gallman prior to the draft. If Wilson didn't get hurt in mini camp, they would have been forced to cut 2 solid RB's (Gallman and probably Hasty) to get down to the 53. Shanahan also has a well deserved reputation for being able to mine solid production out of scrap heap no-name RB's.
I just don't get the decision to allocate that kind of resources to the RB position. I get that Mostert and Wilson aren't the picture of health, so depth was needed. But again they had already signed Gallman, and again its not like Deebo and Aiyuk are iron men either.
The only thing they did during the offseason to shore up the WR corps was sign Trent Sherfield (a career special teamer, with only 28 receptions in 3 years) sign a 32 year old Mohamed Sanu (who had been waived by multiple teams last season mostly because of injuries/ineffectiveness), sign UDFA Austin Watkins (who never made any noise in camp), signed Marquise Lee (who they cut 3 days later.) So yeah they pretty much neglected the WR position.
Sherfield has been a nice camp/preseason surprise. However, we can't realistically rely on him at this point. He needs to show up consistently on Sundays and flash on game film to make defenses respect him, and therefore open up coverages for Aiyuk/Deebo/Kittle. I hope its not the case, but Sherfield wouldn't be the first guy to have a sparkling preseason, only to fade into obscurity during the season.

Seems odd that there are no captains from special teams. I thought Robbie Gould had been one the past few seasons.

You got me curious, so I looked it up.
Gould was a captain in 2018, but they haven't had a special teams captain since then.

Even if his head is straight up his behind, is that any worse that playing the two rookies? Our options are extremely limited.

Yeah, CB depth was a big concern with Verrett. Without him, CB is officially a problem.
I'm not sure what trade options might be out there. Stephon Gilmore would be too expensive from both a draft capital & salary cap cost. Maybe there is a team out there that is thin at DL but heavy at CB, which might be a fit for Frisco to use its DL depth to get CB help.
Even before the Verrett injury, I've heard whispers of a Kinlaw for CJ Henderson trade possibly making sense for both sides.
Another option could be moving Ward back to CB, and bringing back Clinton Dix at safety. I don't love that idea, but like you said the options are limited.
Josh Norman having a late career renaissance sure would be welcomed about now. Not holding my breath on that one though.

Could be, I guess we'll find out later today.
Yeah,he had a "mild" MCL sprain last season and missed a couple games earlier in the season. Then later on last year he hurt his ankle, and missed several more games.
I love the guy, and dude is a freakin killer when he's on the field. Unfortunately, he's brittle.

I wouldn't mind Sherman back at at reasonable price. Sherman at 60% of his old self is still better than Donate Johnson and the 49ers are thin at CB. Good corners are in short supply. At this point all you are probably going to get off the street is some turnstile CB.
Moving Ward back to CB to me is almost a last resort if nothing else. Ward looked bad as a cover corner. Overall this has the potential to get ugly. We gave up a lot of draft capital for Lance so that limits the team somewhat.

Seeing what our up-the-middle run defense looked like yesterday without Kinlaw, I'd rather know that we would be just as bad even with Kinlaw before wanting to trade him away.

Re: 2021 Season news/notes/discussion thread
I can't believe Verrett is probably out for the season. I was watching the game at a sports bar with a few buddies - two of whom are not football fans - and was like, "Oh my God. That's the season. It's hard to imagine us competing for a SB without Verrett." They were like, "That's a bit melodramatic." And then the fourth quarter happened. The drop-off from Verrett to the next guy in our rotation is tremendous. It's a big part of why I've been screaming at the team to add CB talent in the draft during the Shanahan/Lynch era.
It's gonna be a long year, and the offense is going to have to pick up a tremendous amount of slack if we're going to be competitive. NFC West is looking every bit as competitive as we expected, and every team has at least two very very good WRs.
