I'm sure most of us could be knocked over with a feather after hearing this. He'll now miss at least the first 3 games, but I wouldn't be shocked if the earliest we'll see him is after the week 6 bye.
Can't really make much of an argument that they shouldn't have kept Jalen on the 53, because the other WR options were incredibly underwhelming.
However, you can certainly make a case that they definitely should have done more to bring in talent at WR. Outside of the top 2 guys, they have nothing but complete question marks and washed old vets. On top of that, not only are the top 2 guys not great bets to play 17 games, but they both are also pretty young and not well established.
I'll never know why they decided to draft 2 RB's this year. They weren't flush with picks to start with, and already signed Gallman prior to the draft. If Wilson didn't get hurt in mini camp, they would have been forced to cut 2 solid RB's (Gallman and probably Hasty) to get down to the 53. Shanahan also has a well deserved reputation for being able to mine solid production out of scrap heap no-name RB's.
I just don't get the decision to allocate that kind of resources to the RB position. I get that Mostert and Wilson aren't the picture of health, so depth was needed. But again they had already signed Gallman, and again its not like Deebo and Aiyuk are iron men either.
The only thing they did during the offseason to shore up the WR corps was sign Trent Sherfield (a career special teamer, with only 28 receptions in 3 years) sign a 32 year old Mohamed Sanu (who had been waived by multiple teams last season mostly because of injuries/ineffectiveness), sign UDFA Austin Watkins (who never made any noise in camp), signed Marquise Lee (who they cut 3 days later.) So yeah they pretty much neglected the WR position.
Sherfield has been a nice camp/preseason surprise. However, we can't realistically rely on him at this point. He needs to show up consistently on Sundays and flash on game film to make defenses respect him, and therefore open up coverages for Aiyuk/Deebo/Kittle. I hope its not the case, but Sherfield wouldn't be the first guy to have a sparkling preseason, only to fade into obscurity during the season.
