Team's Future

Alex Smith is not our QB of the future. If he doesn't pull it together this year, he just won't make it with this team. Three years as a starter is more than enough time for a QB to show his stuff. So far, we've wasted millions on him.

He shows flashes, but then he fumbles or throws an interception. It's frustrating because I want to believe he'll become at least a consistent starter, but that hasn't happened. I just don't think Alex has the mindset to become great, or even good.

He seems fragile in terms of determination and the will to play - he gets down easily and that's not good for a QB. It doesn't matter that he was thrown into the fire as a rookie, if he was really going to be our QB, he would be more apt to handle adversity by now.

Sure, Hostler's terrible play-calling is a huge factor, but Alex is not helping. Even before his shoulder, he was prone to overthrows, and it seems like his scrambling is getting worse. Sure, maybe the O-Line isn't as good as it could be. But there comes a time when you need to look at Alex alone and ask: Is he going to step up consistently?

As for the defense, it's startling how much wear and tear is affecting us. The offense is last in time of possession, so our defense is on the field more than any other team. That means we are getting tired, and eventually the level of play will deteriorate. If the defense goes downhill as badly as the offense...

I'm not saying I have the answers for change, but I'm just putting it out there that our team is falling fast and something needs to be done. It all starts with the QB too, in my opinion. If things get really bad, we could be in for another total rebuild - and who knows how long that could take...

Woodson, Brohm, Ryan? Someone...

Basically, if things don't change, I think we'll be in for a tough ride ahead.

Way too many QB's bloom later rather than sooner, so im still okay with smith for now. We have much more problems right now, like the Hostler, O-line, Dropped balls, not much of recievers. 7 droped passes in the Steeler game. Im wiling to let Smith play out his contract before we give up, hes still soooo young

He's 23, but can we really wait for him for the rest of his 3 years in the contract?

The dropped balls are largely Smith's fault with bad throws, hence our receivers are virtually non-existent in the offense. Vernon isn't doing what he's fully capable of because we aren't getting him the ball. Granted, he looks injury-prone, but he's still a very good TE and we aren't using him because we can't execute. Gore is frustrated with Hostler and the execution on offense also.

I think we need to start worrying about the defense now. They will get worn down by the end of the year from being on the field so much. Walt Harris's performance today was particularly exemplary of what is happening to them. The effort is still there, but who knows - if we keep getting beaten like this, they will be downtrodden by week 17...

I don't know what we could do about the O-Line, I suppose look for better people. Open to suggestions here.

Obviously, it's not all on Alex, but do you really want to keep him here that long to see if he works out while the rest of the team is falling? We need changes in the coaching and the team, and I just don't see Alex as part of the plan.

I still think we should've signed Byron Leftwich.

Shaun Hill anyone?

We lose to Atlanta... :banghead:

That's the nail in the coffin for Alex Smith, which has slowly been driven in for a long time. All you people who love or even tolerate Alex Smith have to wake up and realize he is not going to be or quarterback.

None of this "let him play out his contract". You want to go through this for another 3 years? Part of the problem is Hostler (he will be fired at the end of the year, no question), but today, against a very bad defense, Alex showed that he can't even play decently against them...

Give me a good reason to even tolerate Alex Smith for the future. Do not give me "there's no one else". There's always someone else, and I'm not talking about Dilfer. I would even tolerate Shaun Hill at this point, because there isn't much expected of him as opposed to Alex, who we wasted a huge contract on.

3 years people...and nothing substantial to show in terms of improvement for Alex. Do not tell me that 3 years is not enough time.

Now the defense is regressing. What will be left down the road?

More years of disappointment :nonono:

Actually, for the first time this season, this wasn't Hostler's fault. There were about 4-5 times when Smith overthrew a WIDE open target, two times that would have resulted in easy TD's. However, we had three chances in the red zone in the 3rd/4th quarters, and all we did was get field goals.

This season is pretty disappointing...we're the worst team in the league and we don't even have our own **** draft pick :banghead: :noway:

you gotta wonder how much faith they actually have in alex, I mean in 80% of his games he's thrown for 200 yards or less and he's averaging barely 24 attempts a game, even grossman is at least averaging 28 as bad as he may be..

yeah I know we don't exactly have crazy receivers, but come on, we can't expect gore to shoulder the load, its just going to result in him getting injured more often
