Team's Future

Alex Smith is not our QB of the future. If he doesn't pull it together this year, he just won't make it with this team. Three years as a starter is more than enough time for a QB to show his stuff. So far, we've wasted millions on him.
He shows flashes, but then he fumbles or throws an interception. It's frustrating because I want to believe he'll become at least a consistent starter, but that hasn't happened. I just don't think Alex has the mindset to become great, or even good.
He seems fragile in terms of determination and the will to play - he gets down easily and that's not good for a QB. It doesn't matter that he was thrown into the fire as a rookie, if he was really going to be our QB, he would be more apt to handle adversity by now.
Sure, Hostler's terrible play-calling is a huge factor, but Alex is not helping. Even before his shoulder, he was prone to overthrows, and it seems like his scrambling is getting worse. Sure, maybe the O-Line isn't as good as it could be. But there comes a time when you need to look at Alex alone and ask: Is he going to step up consistently?
As for the defense, it's startling how much wear and tear is affecting us. The offense is last in time of possession, so our defense is on the field more than any other team. That means we are getting tired, and eventually the level of play will deteriorate. If the defense goes downhill as badly as the offense...
I'm not saying I have the answers for change, but I'm just putting it out there that our team is falling fast and something needs to be done. It all starts with the QB too, in my opinion. If things get really bad, we could be in for another total rebuild - and who knows how long that could take...
Woodson, Brohm, Ryan? Someone...
Basically, if things don't change, I think we'll be in for a tough ride ahead.
