No first round pick?

Now's about the time of year I give up on the season and look forward to the draft. But looking at the mock drafts it looks like the 49ers don't have a first round pick this year. How the hell did that happen?

You traded it to the patriots for Joe Staley.

Worst trade ever. We quite possibly could end up with the 3rd to 5th pick, and now it goes straight to the Pats. Instead, we will get the Colts pick (traded our 2nd rounder for their 1st rounder), which will be in the 27th to 30th range
Staley has been good, but he is NOT worth a 3rd-5th pick.

It seems like in the NFL, draft picks aren't conditionally protected nearly as much as they are in the NBA. I just can't imagine trading your first round pick without putting some conditions on it, like top-3 protected or something. Even if you're confident that you'll be good, you've got to keep a safety net for injuries or other unforeseen problems.
Staley has been decent, even though the o-line has been terrible overall, but this is one of the worst trades I've ever heard of in any sport.

trading a 1st round pick for a 1st round pick is not all that bad of a trade. Usually u get the advantage taking the current years pick. No one predicted we would be this bad. At worst they probably thought it would be around the 15th pick.
So far im pretty happy with stayley and can see him being in this league for a long time. Do i think he is better than someone we could have got in the top 5 or so, probably not. But hes not far off especially if you consider the lineman that would be available there.

I think I'd rather have Ugoh and our 2008 1st than Staley and Indy's first.

Definately.
