Is he still the QB of the future for SF?
Should the 49ers be looking to draft a QB?

He's the "starter" for right now. But I doubt we waste a pick on a QB. Smith and Hill, we are set for QB #1 and #2 (Hill could still beat Smith out for starter). We might draft a QB in the 6th or 7th round to battle with O'Sullivan, but since we lost a pick in the whole Chicago Bears drama, I doubt we would "waste" a pick on a QB.

If Smith and the 49ers' struggle to another losing season (anything less than 7-9), I think it will be Smith's, and obviously Nolan's, last year as a 49er.

Steve Young was saying that Matt Ryan was the only "franchise QB" in this draft or the next.

I think that if the team is interested in a QB, and Brian Brohm is still there when the 49ers 2nd round pick comes up, I'd be tempted.

Yeah, although I don't feel that the Dolphins will pass on Brohm when they pick 1st in the 2nd round. If the Dolphins get nervous and think the Packers might pick up Brohm, I could see Miami trading with us, something like our 1st for the 2nd + their 4th or 5th pick for this year. Although, if Cherilus drops to our pick in the 1st, I think we will pick him up ASAP. Then, if Groves somehow drops to our early 2nd round pick....good day for us.

If they get a QB on day 2, I think I'd like to see them go with Dixon from Oregon.

Honestly, whether or not the guy has a future, it's not exactly as though we have built around him like other first overall QB's get built around. We basically just sort of threw him out there, with a crappy line and crappier receivers...and expected it to somehow all work itself out.

I agree that Hill did better with the same cast, but still not good, and imo if you invest a top overall pick in a QB, you sort of make building around him a higher priority. Otherwise, why did you invest such a high pick in the guy?

He has one more year and if it doesnt work out, I say we go in another direction. If he shows some improvement then I say we keep him and see how it works out with him and Martz. I dont think Smith will be the QB most people thought he would be when we drafted him, but you never know, maybe he has it in him..

niners are the blame, how can you draft a qb number 1 have him work with 4 different oc's in his first 4 years. thats a recipe for disaster.

According to PFW, Martz is over the moon about Smith, telling confidants that Smith might be the best QB he's worked with in the NFL.

He's certainly the smartest QB he's worked with. A season like 2006 maybe realistic now that he's with a real offensive coordinator unlike last season.

I like that Martz is telling him to forget everything he's learned and is starting from scratch with him, beginning with the way he takes a snap.

I'm still not real high on him, because he has yet to prove that he can throw to spots, anticipating an opening. He only seems to be able to throw to open targets. I'm not sure you can teach that.

Personally, I am sick of hearing crap like this. Nolan mentioned something like this in an interview as did Norv Turner. However, I have yet to see it. Everyone keeps talking about how hes never had the same offensive coordinator twice and how he is still learning and I understand that. But if he was half as good as I kkep hearing then we should have seen it by now. I have not seen much greatness out of him since we drafted him. I dont care how smart he is... if he sucks, he sucks. I am at the point where I have given up hope on him. I say Nolan needs to start Shaun Hill and trade Smith pronto!
