David Carr to 49ers?!?!??

Rest assured, 49ers fans, your team will not sit back helplessly while the division-rival Rams court A.J. Feeley.

San Francisco is taking a look at another free-agent backup quarterback, David Carr. Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger has the details.

With Alex Smith already on the roster, adding Carr could give the 49ers a draft-day dream team featuring former No. 1 overall picks under center.

Anyone seen Tim Couch?

Seriously, though, I would rather have Shaun Hill backing up Smith than Carr, although Carr obviously has more raw talent.

This was on the ESPN Free Agency Blog. I hope the 49ers aren't actually considering bringing in Carr and wasting money on him when they already have a decent backup in Shaun Hill and Nate Davis. Would just be wasting money.

EWWWWWWWWWE.

I see no benefit whatsoever in signing Carr. Only way this makes any sense is if Mac either has a trade in place for Hill (doubtful), or plans on releasing him. I don't see any reason to bring in a 4th QB (who is not any good anyways), and would take more reps away from Nate Davis.

totally agree with you. Imagine the 49ers having 2 #1 QBs on the same team who both didn't live up to their high expectations lol.

Obviously, Hill is getting cut.

Its possible that Carr will be cheaper than Hill.

Niners brass hates Hill. He has no arm and teams stack the box and dare him to throw down the field. I hated Carr in college due to his lack of pocket presence. Dude takes more sacks than JTO. Niners want him for two years since Smith has only one year left and they still might not have their QB of the futue this year either. I don't think they're a good enough team to be a playoff threat until they get a quality QB.

Like I said in my earlier post, the only way bringing in Carr makes sense is if Hill is out. I like Shaun cause he is a fierce competitor, but his ceiling is quite low and he features a noodle arm. I wouldn't be at all upset if he got released.

Carr would be an uprgrade over Hill, just because as mentioned he has more raw talent. But if Hill stays on, I still see no benefit of having a 4th QB taking reps away from Nate.

I would like to see Jimmy build some kind of Wildcat package for Davis, if for nothing else just to get him some experience in meaningful games. Would do wonders for his confidence and help accelerate his development.

LOL, P.Willis doesn't want Carr either.......

San Francisco linebacker Patrick Willis posted comments on his Twitter page that didn't exactly open his arms to Carr.

"I'm saying if we going to go get another qb spend money on a difference maker. Like (Michael Vick). My opinion," Willis wrote

Vick is an intriguing option, I'd like to see him here. I'm also a huge Vick fan though, so that might be the homerism talking :)

I don't see the point in bringing in Carr. He doesn't do anything noticeably better than Smith and we already have Hill.

Look's like David Carr is better insurance than Shaun Hill. I don't want to see Vick ever in Gold, Red, and White. Hopefully, the 49ers can draft Ryan Mallett in next year's draft if Alex Smith doesn't play well this season.

I think this is a pretty dumb move. If we are, in fact, trying to find out if Smith can be the guy, the assumption has to be that how we've handled him previously...ie, in and out, different systems/OCs/roles, etc. has been part of the problem.

Hence, part of the solution would have to be giving him at least the semblance of stability.

Bringing in a relative equal and trying to generate Walsh's 'creative tension' is, imo, counter-productive in this particular situation.

Heard on Sirius NFL radio that with the Carr siging now official , it is expected that Hill will be released.

At first thought, I was thinking why hasn't he already been cut? Then I realized that its in the 9ers best interest to see if there is any market for Shaun in trade. I doubt there is, especially now that every team in the league knows that Hill will likely be cut and become an un-restricted FA. But Mac still needs to put out some feelers. I mean even the option to swap 7th round draft picks, is something right?

In any event, Hill will be gone very soon.

I just hope the 49ers try and address pass rushing and coverage in free agency. At least explore the possibility of signing some defensive linemen or a strong safety.

Good, have Carr and Smith compete for the #1 QB role. Neither is the long term solution IMO so you might as well light a fire under both of them through some competition. Real competition, not Mike Martz style fixed competition.

I am going to go out on a limb and say that Alex Smith will be the starting QB in 2010. I don't think Carr, Davis, or Hill will get the job over Alex. Alex performed well in the beginning but declined towards the end of the season. Hopefully some stability will let him grow.

Davis is definitely not ready. I'd expect Smith to get the job and lose it by midseason unless King Crab goes beast mode.

I just wish Singletary would give Alex Smith some stability. Alex Smith only has 1 year left and it's not like any of the other QBs would do a better job. Thinking about David Carr playing back there just makes me scared.

Yeah, Alex has basically had a new OC every year of his career. He looked pretty good under Turner, and started off really well last year under Raye. Singletary is already on record saying that Alex is the unquestioned starter going into next season. Hopefully Alex will continue to grow under Jimmy's system. I don't think he ever becomes a top tier QB, but he has the tools to be better than serviceable.

On a semi-related note. Just heard on NFL radio that Shaun Hill has been given permission to seek a trade. I don't see any market for him. Why would a team trade a draft pick for Shaun, when they could just sign Derek Anderson or Jake Delhomme outright? I predict his agent will look, but not find anything and Shaun will be released sometime before the draft.

Update:

Apparently David Carr has not officially signed yet because he is currently vacationing in Mexico. But the contract has already been confirmed and agreed to by both sides. The deal is reportedly 2 years/6.25 million.

As for Hill, The team has indeed granted him permission to seek a trade. Mini camp begins on Monday, and he said he intends to show up. But the growing expectation is that Hill will be released sometime over the weekend. With camp opening next week, a weekend release seems to be best for both the team and Shaun.

3 million a year seems like a lot for David Carr. He doesn't deserve 3 million a year. Must be nice playing in the NFL!

He's a whatever QB. Solid enough to make sure your team won't implode with him in the interim but nothing special.

Definitely not worth the guaranteed money he received when the Texans drafted him.
