game 4: Seahawks vs Falcons

Gear up for play like mullarky for Barkley... or worse. The Colts will beat the Chiefs in the luck of the lottery. Psychic Wine-O Dan knows this. It's the Spurs nab Duncan all over again. The Seahawks? Maybe they better starting trying to win the west again. It's a year full of tank and if it isn't Luck, I'd almost rather have Portis step up than get Barkley or the other Johnny come lately's. Dang nabbit our D is good. Actually good. With Pete Carroll's knack for Safeties and oversized defenders we are starting to earn respect for our defense.

So What to do now? Clearly Jackson is a bag of hammers on reads and accuracy, but if the Seahawks can win against a respected but limping Falcons team, you can put the Seahawks in the mix to win the sorry division again, thus being screwed out of lottery picks by divisional sucktitude. On the other hand if the D plays like this and the assumption that a season could do wonders for the youthful O-line holds up, you start to look at the weapons a dangerous QB has to throw at and the solid rb situation and think hmmm....

Injury update:

Image

Seahawks-

Tom Cable (coach) back surgery. Gallery (LG) out with groin injury, Maxwell (CB) ankle, *Kam Chancellor should play with a thigh bruise

Falcons

For the Falcons, tackle Sam Baker (ankle) returned to practice after sitting out Wednesday and linebacker Curtis Lofton (foot) participated fully after being limited on Wednesday. Five players did not practice: leading receiver Roddy White (thigh), defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux (knee), linebacker Stephen Nicholas (calf), running back Jason Snelling (concussion) and defensive end Cliff Matthews (knee).

Things to Watch:

1-Jackson spreading the ball around.
If he doesn't target Williams and Miller this game and stares down Rice all game long I would expect there would be some talk of a bye week QB change.

2-Pass Defense
Atlanta has nice weapons and a QB who can do damage. The DB's will be tested, but just as importantly considering the lack of pass protection thus far for Ryan- Clemons, Brock, and the blitz will need to and should have big days.

3-Guards
They were the weakest link last week in protection. I expect them to become the new O-line whipping boy now that there is suddenly some love for Carpenter. Hidden note- Okung needs to stop taking penalties, he's not playing smart this year.

4-Washington
Leon seems like he's healthy and due to make a big play or two.

5-The rest of the tanking teams.
I firmly believe that our best shot to get luck would be Minni getting number 1 and then accepting our entire draft. Unfortunately, if McNabb plays a little better and they remember they have a guy named Peterson on their team I think they pull out of running for #1. Meanwhile the Chiefs might have a little pride left and they were playing well last year, but if they don't turn it on this week it could be full on suck for luckness. The Colts I still expect will only lose the race if Manning insists on coming back and is allowed to late in the season.

6- Advil vs Hangover
I'll be solidly in Advil's corner, though i like a second bottle of wine as a dark horse candidate.

Predictions-

We will try to lose this game, but a big play from Tate or Washington will be bad for our Luck.

Surprisingly, I think this one might be a 'Hawks win too. Maybe the defense will be exposed, but I expect us to at least play competitively against a Falcons team that's been a bit disappointing so far. I expect the O-Line to continue its improvement and see Washington get the ball more as a change of pace.

Also, our best drive last week came on a 'no huddle' drive. PC made comments after the game that indicated the team would take a look at doing that more often, and I expect the team to do just that. Keep the defense off balance and see if you can exploit mismatches. Jackson just might be one of those players who plays a bit better when he's not given time to think.

And I think my ideal draft is now Luck [1st round], Cliff Harris [2nd round], and Chris Polk [3rd round].

I can't name one QB who would be a good comp to Portis considering his skill set and where he came from. I'm rooting for the guy, but seeing him become a star QB seems radically unlikely.

And the only morning game they are showing in my area is CLE/TEN. Goddammit.

Outside of a Seahawk or playoff game, I haven't watched a complete NFL game in years. NFL Redzone has ruined me forever.

Well, we can't do something stupid today like go out and win. Last week was a hiccup, don't need to turn this thing into a pandemic. 2-2 doesn't do anyone any favors... although, with St. Louis' horrific start, we might just be considered NFC West favorites if we win today (!!). What a weird season.

What's really going to get interesting is if we end up winning 5 or 6 games (which, as much as I don't want to, is not exactly unrealistic with a couple of Ohio teams + more wild NFC West action + Washington left). With so many teams needing QBs, what do we do if we pick 6 or 7th and Luck/Barkley/Jones come off the board in the first 5 picks? A truly horrifying predicament. If we win today, do we rename this thing "The Goal is Foles (in the 2nd round)"??

Atlanta's been underachieving so far this year. Our defense and home field advantage may keep this game close, but our horrific offense will eventually prevail, and Atlanta beats us. Something like 24-13.

This has been my nightmare scenario for some time now. We win just enough games to fall out of drafting one of the top QB prospects in the draft, condemning ourselves to mediocrity in a QB/pass driven league for years to come.

I'd rather be totally sh*tty for one year and solve this problem for the long term.

Well, there's not much we can do about. Anyone watching the Browns getting destroyed by the Titans right now? I don't know how we could sink to that level.

You're right. There's nothing we can do about it. But I do slightly resent the people who refuse to see the logic/merits in wanting such a thing to happen.

Tarvaris Jackson just threw the ball away out of bounds on 3rd and short. Jesus.

And Aaron Curry looks like he just broke Matt McCoy's leg. GOD.

He does so much **** that I just don't know he could do it. I don't know what thought could have run through his head that made that seem like a good plan. it made me legitimately wonder if he'd forgotten what down it was.

He's just not a good decision maker. I noticed it early on in the preseason. Then it was confirmed in the first few games. I don't know if this is something that can be much taught/learned.

Anyway...

Maybe it can early in a player's career but certainly not for a player who's been in the league as long as Jackson has.

And he throws it over the head of Mike Williams on a 7 yard sideline route. He's a special player.

**** can't get rid of the ball when the pocket starts to collapse and tries to scramble for a gain of nothing on 3rd down. Worst. QB. Ever.

On a side note, both Kansas City (1-3) and the Bengals (2-2) won today in the "Luck Derby".

How about the Lions coming back from that deficit to beat the Cowboys in Dallas? I guess they are for real. Stafford has got a crazy passing arm. If they can build up their OL for him, he's good enough to take that team anywhere.

Calvin Johnson probably showed Rob Ryan why he's better than any WR on that Cowboys team.

Overall, this looks like a poorly coached team. The penalties, the poor tackling form, players caught out of formation or not knowing assignments. Little awareness. Whatever.
