FA and Draft thread (the Deuce is loose)

We've got chunks of each in a few threads, so I figured I'd start a centralized spot.
This hasn't been as fast, furious, and fun as last FA period, but how could it?

After Day 1 of Free Agency we know:

-Manning hates south Alaskans :kissmybutt:
-Red is back in the house on a 5 year 35million contract.
-We are planning to entertain Henne before Flynn
-Heater is testing the market and we are keeping our hands in our pocket

step right up, step right up... sign a player, draft a player, you're mom likes Slayer.

Carlson probably will defect, not surprising considering we have Miller and even Miller averaged about 1 look a game.

Please do not let Manning to the Titans result in any Hass back to Seattle talk

Leinart is free! and was happy to be a backup instead of competing for Pete last year. It's probably time for him to try his hand at the CFL

This is surprising: Apparently Steve Hutchinson is going to come in for a visit. Not against the idea, but I really did not see that happening.

AGREED. That ship has sailed.

I was excited because I thought Hutch was as good as ours after the timing of events yesterday, but alas he is now a Titan. Not that we should have given a 35 year old guard a three year deal but it's still disappointing.

You know, as much as I would love to see Mario Williams in a 'Hawks uniform, I appreciate the lack of panic from our front office. They have a plan, they establish market values, and they don't freak out. The teams that panic and dump tons of money into free agents don't seem to be the teams that win. Teams like Green Bay, New York, New England, Pittsburgh...they've built through the draft, and they constantly replenish key positions before something becomes a need. Or sign/target values that an average fan may see as a luxury.

As much as we may look at the roster and not think a DT like Jason Jones is a need, that's the same approach teams like Pittsburgh and New York take. You add and build through the trenches. Osi has a knee issue? Who cares...there's a guy waiting behind him. It works.

yeah I agree^^

It looks like Robinson will be back for us.
I'm guessing Hill is cheap enough to bring back too.
Glad we got Farwell back as a special teams ace.

Charlie Whitehurst is back with the Chargers. Good for him...I didn't think anyone would pick him up.

all i care about is getting some upgrades in the LB core, by far the weakest part of our team besides maybe the special teams

Hey, Packer fan here. Looks like you guys landed Matt Flynn. Congrats! He's a great player that deserves this kind of deal. He was, hands down, the best backup in the league. There's no question he's a starter in this league. He's definitely an upgrade from Tavaris Jackson.

I can't remember one red flag from watching Flynn play. He has always looked solid and poised. Honestly, I was so convinced he was going to Miami. Looks like the fins will be stuck with either Alex Smith or David Gerrard.

Seahawks just got a lot better.

Nice deal. I'm still skeptical of Flynn but that price is no risk high upside. Still hope they take a QB in Rd.2/3.

i think flynn was the best option for us this offseason, short of somehow landing peyton manning. now we don't have to reach on a qb in the draft. i just wasn't feeling that kid from a & m.

his deal sounds pretty reasonable, too.

My opinion of Flynn has cooled over time, probably just as a natural pushback to all the talk radio hosts pushing him as a savior for some reason. I like Flynn alot but if people think nearly 500 yards passing and 6 TDs in one game is indicative of his true talent then they'll be disappointed.

But for options this offseason? If our options were [1] Sign Manning, [2] Sign Flynn, [3] Start T-Jack, [4] Beat the Redskins' trade for RGIII, or [5] Sign Alex Smith...

Well, Flynn's the easy #2 there. I think he has potential and I like the deal alot. I don't think he's going to be elite but above average is certainly possible.

The Seahawks are having one of those quiet offseasons that you look at in retrospect and come away impressed. They keep their main pieces [Lynch, Bryant], added starting talent that they could have overpaid for [Flynn, J. Jones], and now they're set up to head into the draft able to do whatever the hell they want to do. All they need to do is lock down the LB corps and this team's ready to go.

for how bad the offense has sucked the last couple of seasons and how well the defense did play last year it seems the most needs are on the defensive side of the ball. im hopin we get some good young LBs in the draft that can start right away because there are pretty much no LBs on the market besides our own... which arent very good

I was really excited to try to get him early on, then I also cooled on the idea, now I'm happy... even happier now that Manning went to the donkeys and we don't have to hear any Tebow to Seattle chatter.

Here's some video breakdown on Flynn:

His 1st start vs New England

Positives:
-seems to shred the defense with the short passing game. very decisive and quick without just honing in on the hot read.
-I did see him stare down guys a few times, but for the most part his heads on a swivel and he's diagnosing multiple routes (unlike Charlie and TJ)
-took some licks without any real damage
-showed some mobility as a last resort.
-fearless in the pocket (the anti-warner)
-made smart throw aways

Negatives:
-floats the long ball
-delivery wasn't always very clean
-the interceptions were bad delivery and placement. one went pick 6

2011 late snaps in a game vs Vikings

-again really clean mid range throws showing a good read
-scored a td on the run with nice quickness

The massive game vs the Lions

-Arm looks stronger, still floating delivery. Check 2:09
-Biggest thing that jumps out to me: he is great at setting up receivers for yards after the catch.

One thing you can see is that with his quick short passes we will be a lot more dangerous in the red zone. Seems like Mike Williams might get more tds with him around.

Pardon me for stating the obvious but a lot of that sounds like Hass. Except for the 'smart throw aways' part...Hass liked to do that little whirly-bird move from time to time where he'd fling it wherever it could be flung, often with poor results.

The question for me is: Can he lead a drive when needed? We lost several games last year where a drive at the end of the half or the game would have tipped the balance in our favor. Can he get the offense moving and make the right plays?

Also, I like that Flynn seems willing to throw to all parts of the field. Jackson didn't seem to like to do that.

Well, looks like the Seahawks are bringing Michael Bush in for a visit. His market really hasn't developed, and I'd be more than happy to see him back-up Lynch over Forsett or Washington [who looks like a waste of resources given the new kick-off rules].

There's still plenty of good LB out on the market...they're just going to cost too much. Wimbley, Hawthorne, Lofton, Tulloch. Maybe we can get a steal...who knows?
