Seahawks-

Out
DT Jordan Hill (biceps)

Doubtful
CB Brandon Browner (hamstring)
SS Jeron Johnson (hamstring)

Questionable
DE Chris Clemons (knee)

Probable
DE Cliff Avril (hamstring)
OT Michael Bowie (shoulder)
DT Tony McDaniel (groin)
DT Brandon Mebane (ankle)
WR Sidney Rice (knee)
TE Luke Willson (oblique)

49ers

Questionable
RB LaMichael James (knee)

Things to Watch:

1. Seattle O-line protection
It would not surprise me if Carolina's D-line was actually better than SF's, but we cannot allow Russell to deal with the shortened throwing time, sacks, and hits again in this game. Especially since this kind of rivalry makes rushers meaner and dirtier.

2. Marshawn vs Gore
If this game doesn't see early scores it's likely to end up a time of possession type of game. Lynch has not gone beastmode yet this season, but we'll need it to balance the offense if nothing else.

3. Kap vs the Legion of Boom minus one.
Missing Browner hurts because Boldin was on fire last week and Browner has the side and mean to get at Boldin. Luckily we are deep, Thurmond is still healthy and playing like a starter, Sherm loves the spotlight, and you know if CK scrambles he's going to have to fear the Kam hammer.

4. Penalties
Somehow Seattle didn't get dinged for too many penalties last week, but we know they do have that issue lingering and in a heated game you could either have more leeway or be under a microscope. Let's hope Breno keeps himself on the right side of player ejections or damaging unsportsman likes.

5. Good for more 5 yard losses- the 12th Man or the Seattle pass rushers?
Pray for both. Cliff Avril is coming back, but still no Clem and Irvin. Last week the 4 man rush was anemic and similarly it's hard to bring too many guys when the apposing QB is mobile and has a hot route receiver like their TE or Boldin. Needless to say we need pressure and we need pre-snap confusion, delay of games, and false starts.

Predictions-
49ers 18 20 Seattle 21

It's going to be horrible waiting for the early games to get over because this is the only one I care about today.

Plus, Sherman and Boldin have met before.

The two met previously on Nov. 13, 2011, when Sherman was a rookie and Boldin played for the Baltimore Ravens.

Boldin caught just two of the nine passes he was targeted for a season-low 22 yards. Sherman was matched against Boldin on seven of those pass attempts, and Boldin caught one for 17 yards. Boldin had difficulty separating from Sherman, but Boldin typically does not require much space to make catches.

Boldin's a weapon, but he's not going to be running free up the seam like he did against Green Bay. They'll try to move him around to get different matchups, but I think we'll limit the damage he does.

Hopefully the Seahawks will open up the offense. I still think that one reason last week was so difficult was they played it too conservative on offense

I wouldn't be surprised if the game ends up being delayed. We've had some impressive thunderstorms up here in the last couple weeks, and thunder and lightning have both been prevalent in the last 5-10 minutes.

How was the blocked punt play not a false start? For ****'s sake!

Thanks to the interception the harm is limited to field position

What a brutal game...a 5-0 lead but our QB has taken a couple big hits [and one of them was dirty as ****]. Time for Kaep to experience a similar treatment.

our defense is ridiculous. i know we'll be getting browner, clemons, and irvin back within a month but how do you improve upon 5.0 ppg?? the depth is going to be unreal.

hard running by lynch. bevell started releasing RW on some designed runs in the second half, which was nice... offense isn't yet where it needs to be, but obviously san fran can d up.

hope okung is okay.

2-0! we become an unofficial member of the afc south for the next four weeks.

Nice little footnote to the game
The fan group attempting to set a Guinness World Records mark for loudest stadium says it has established a record during Sunday night's game between the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers.

The group, called Volume 12, announced on its Facebook page it had set the mark late in the first quarter. The decibel reading taken during a sack of San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick in the first quarter — following a one hour weather delay — was 131.9 decibels.

The previous record for "loudest crowd roar at a sports stadium," was 131.76 decibels, set in 2011 in Turkey at the Ali Sami Yen Sport Complex Turk Telekom Arena during a soccer match between Galatasaray SC and Fenerbahce.

The group footed the bill for the Guinness World Records official to come to Seattle and wasn't affiliated with the team

A couple thoughts after the fact...

The LT/LG Situation: About the last thing I wanted to see early on is Okung coming up lame with a lower leg injury. Pete's vague answers about Okung's status today didn't make me feel any better about the situation. Okung's a Pro Bowl left tackle and a huge part of RW's blindside protection. McQuistan was a less than stellar replacement [although, to be fair, I don't think he's had much time at LT recently and he was lined up against the most proficient sack artist in the league].

On the other hand...

Carpenter came in for McQuistan and was a dominant run blocker. His strength allows him to lock a defender in place and allow the RB a place to sneak through. If he can stay healthy, no one's pushing on the interior.

Also, maybe we'll get a chance to see some Alvin Bailey against the Jags' first team defense. Bailey's been inactive in both games, but he looked very stout in the pre-season.

The DL: Just dominant. Red Bryant might not fill up a statsheet but boy does he fill up a running lane. Michael Bennet looks great regardless of whether he's lined up on the inside or the outside. He knows how to knife his way through a line and get to a QB. Kap may have escaped the pressure more often than not, but he was clearly uncomfortable the whole game.

Our first look at Avril was a positive one. If we never saw Clemons all season and Avril remained healthy, I don't know that we'd notice all that much. So how lucky are we that we're not far from seeing BOTH players health and active within the next couple weeks.

We have so many pieces to use on the line for either a pass rush or run defense. With that LB corps behind them, and the L.O.B. behind them...it's too exciting.

we become unofficial members of the afc south the next month:

jacksonville
@ houston
@ indy
tennessee

really looking forward to those two road games, but what this team is going to do to blaine gabbert this sunday is not going to be pretty.

ha! just noticed on wiretap: hawks are 19.5 point favorites against the jags, 10th highest spread in nfl history.

got into an argument with a friend (an arizona fan) today. i said if we claim homefield, this team is going to the super bowl. he says we're still too young, and the niners or packers could beat us at c-link in a playoff atmosphere. i don't mean to get a big head, but (of course barring the injury situation this january) i just don't see us losing in the PNW this year. EVERY win counts on the road to homefield.

The game I was most worried about losing at home ended up being a blowout that was so bad, fans of the opposing team are writing the following letters to their local newspaper:

Was anyone else appalled by the unsportsmanlike conduct of the Seattle Seahawks and their fans, juiced on noise, which surely creates as big an advantage over an opponent as any performance enhancing drug and which, to their shame, NFL officials turn the same blind eye they have to concussions and drugs ("Seattle states case loudly, clearly in rout," Sports, Sept. 16)?

It would be simple to fix. Seahawks players and managers would ask their fans to cease and desist, and the NFL would implement a new rule: The visiting team may stop the game when fan noise is greater than a specified decibel level, and should this rule be violated in more than three games, no home games will be played at the offending field for the rest of the season, including playoff games. Things would quiet down.

At a time when the world seems sour, sports give us a place of joy, community and hope, and to have it spoiled is a bigger loss than it seems on the surface.

I couldn't agree more with "Unsportsmanlike conduct in Seattle" (Letters, Sept. 17).

It wasn't a game of skill anymore; it was an exhibition of excessive stadium noise, posturing obscenities in your opponent's face to draw a foul and street-punk behavior to fire up tensions to gain any advantage to get the win.

I hope the NFL will listen before the fans go deaf. Please stop the excessive stadium noise, and just play football.

Delightful...

I agree. I really don't see us losing at home this year, regardless or whether it's a regular season or a playoff game. Not that I'm not confident of our chances on the road, but our defense just hits a second level when we are at home.
