4 possible replacements for Russ

As a thought experiment my preference:

1. Carr (injury concerns for me, but seems to fit the new o-scheme)
2. Gardner (part of me wants that bravado as much or more than what Carr brings, also seems to fit the waldron O)
3. not expensive ass cousins at all in my book.

I do think though that to maximize Metcalf and Tyler, we need someone who can throw the occasional bomb. I looked and Gardner just does not have a big arm, while Carr actually does but doesn't use it.
I also think with any of those two you need to a good backup, which i think Smith works for me after last years growth.

My take? I want nothing to do with Carr. He lead the league in turnovers in the 4th Q & OT this year. He's just not good enough. If your O-line can't protect than Cousins is worthless. Pass on both. Minshew as a starter would land you a top 5 pick. Does going 3-14 sound appealing?

I'm curious about Hurt for the early loose Eagles rumors... Pete has gotten a lot out of youth at QB back to USC

I'm in favor of the coaching changes.

Desai is a good hire.

Solari being fired is kind of surprising. But I like the idea of promoting Dickerson. They needed to get younger & more innovative from a coaching perspective.

My conspiracy theory is Pete is still looking at Darnold

I'm also not moving DK... draft picks are dodgy and he's young enough to be worth paying for even if we are rebuilding.

Lockett?... depends on we think our QB will be. if it's a big armed vet keep... if not trade.

You only move him if it's for a huge haul - 2 1st's.

If they get Watson. Then it makes no sense to deal him.

yeah don't want anything to do with him and he's still likely to get a suspension

It's worth it in my mind. Just strictly from a Football perspective. It would completely justify trading Russ. As you would get an elite QB in his prime (26). An upgrade.

I don't love any of the other options at this point.

Malik Willis is not a good enough prospect. There are legit concerns with him. He has a very good arm. Which he showed off at the combine. But just from watching some scouting reports & limited tape on him. There are so many deficiencies in his game. He actually shares a lot of the same qualities as Russ. Both good & bad. He's not an efficient pocket passer by any means. Struggles with middle of the field throws. Also is sacked at an extremely high rate (51 sacks last season). Does any of this sound familiar?

Kirk Cousins could be an option. But his cap number makes it really hard to imagine. He'll also be a Free Agent, so you'll have to give him a new deal worth upwards of $40-45m per year. :ouch:

Who else is available? Jimmy Garoppolo? Teddy Bridgewater? Mitch Trubisky? Mariota?

If you don't acquire Watson, then you're basically punting on 2022. Likely instead signing a journeyman QB (Bridgewater or Mariota) as a placeholder or starting a rookie. Drew Lock?

If Lock or one of these other crap QB's available on the market is the starter, then both Pete & John likely end up being replaced.

Fwiw no one is touching Kaepernick.
