Focus on: the ground game

Post#1 » by Danny Darko » Mon Sep 22, 2008 11:29 pm

I have to say I expected us to have a lively run game this year, but week one scared the hell out of me. Now 3 weeks in and 7 hurt receivers later, I'm pretty glad we have really looked like we can pound the ball, so let's take a closer look at the run game:

Team stats:

League stats for rushing look like this (top 5):
Team Rushing

ATT YDS YPG AVG TD LONG FUMBLES
1 Falcons 106 609 203.0 5.7 6 66 1
2 Ravens 90 380 190.0 4.2 5 42 2
3 Raiders 107 548 182.7 5.1 3 50 5
4 Seahawks 101 499 166.3 4.9 5 32 0
5 Vikings 101 485 161.7 4.8 1 34 0

As you can see we are one of the very best, especially looking at the attempts, and (knock on wood) no fumbles

League individual leaders:

Rk Name/Team
1 Michael Turner, Atl 59 Att 366 Yds 6.20 Avg 5 TD 0 Fumbles
2 Adrian Peterson, Min 65 Att 340 Yds 5.23 Avg 1 TD 0 Fumbles
3 Julius Jones, Sea 61 Att 312 Yds 5.11 Avg 2 TD 0 Fumbles
4 Matt Forte, Chi 73 Att 304 Yds 4.16 Avg 1 TD 0 Fumbles
5 Frank Gore, SF 60 Att 287 Yds 4.78 Avg 3 TD 2 Fumbles

Jones is playing hungry and Mo going down is starting to look like a blessing, especially considering we didn't lose him for the season.

Team leaders:

Rushing Att Yds Avg TD
Julius Jones 61 312 5.11 2
T.J. Duckett 21 82 3.90 3
Leonard Weaver 9 41 4.56 0

I like two things here:
a- Jones is scoring td's and long ones at that.
b- Duckett for all my bitching has been that redzone guy we wanted

Now last year Weaver was the new best thing ever, this year he is doing his best Mack Strong impersonation. I like that he's really embraced protection while still having all the run/catch tools most fb's do not.

The guys who are forgotten when things go well: The O-line. Kudos to them for having injuries and still pounding the ball effectively.

If we can get our air attack back in check, we'll be scary with our slasher and our clock eater (jones/duckett) closing out games and providing offensive balance to allow Hass and the receiving corp(more like morgue right now) to do there thing.

Basically... the season is young and I'm still optimistic that we'll scratch our way back to the playoffs and gain character along the way.

Go Ground Hawks.

Note: all stats gathered from FoxSports.com
Weaver blowing up the 9er is a pic from last year.

There's certainly cause for optimism that the running game will at least be decent (and it can't possibly be any worse than last year), but bear in mind that two of the Seahawks' three games so far were against terrible teams (one of which they still couldn't beat). No other team or player you listed above has played St. Louis (although Michael Turner and Frank Gore have played Detroit, which has the same kind of effect). Mmm, beer.

I am littler worried for when Morris comes back. I have never been a fan of his and I am worried that Holmgren will give him carries that should be going to Jones and Duckett.

No need to worry about Mo, imo. He & Holmy are both used to keeping his butt on the bench. The job is JJ's now.

The top post prompts me to mention that Peterson & Turner happen to be my fantasy backs. I'm going to have a hard time finding a way to get Ronnie Brown off of my bench (luckily I didn't need his monster numbers last week). Also managed to pick up Brandon Marshall prior to week 1 when some numbskull waived him due to his suspension.
Gonna be a sweet year for the Greedy Bastards! :lift:

^^ haha greedy bastards.

I just Hope Mike knows that TJ should be absorbing clock and punishment come 4th quarter if we have a lead and not to keep forcing the duo of Mo and Jones into the piles. Mo was killing it in preseason, and nobody looked good in the opener.

I think the real difference here might be Willis mauling people on the right side. what to do with Lock, Willis, and Chop now?

Porkchop did a fine job last week, to be perfectly honest. But Locklear's one of the best RT in the league, and Willis didn't miss a beat while filling in for him. Who knows?

Yeah, I guess that is the answer: Willis mauls from RG and Chop goes back to being the mult-position backup.

I think Rob Sims getting injured might have been a good thing. Since he has been injured our line has been much better.
