One of the more interesting characters in the upcoming NFL draft figures to be Jason Pierre-Paul, a defensive end out of the University of South Florida whose raw talent will prove intriguing to teams looking for a hidden gem.

The 6-foot-5, 270-pound son of Haitian immigrants struggled academically coming out of high school and wound up playing at two different junior colleges before landing at South Florida, where he flashed considerable potential last season.

Now he's shooting up draft boards and mock drafts, with our friend Rob Rang of nfldraftscout.com putting him to the Seahawks with the 14th pick in his latest mock draft.

He's a bit of a freak for sure. And we could use a stud DE. Seems like we could trade down for him even.

But can he play football? He may have talent, but he also sounds like someone the Raiders would take at #8.

It sounds like I'm being sarcastic but I don't mean it that way. I just have concern when a player comes out of nowhere in the combine displaying great athletic tools. Pierre-Paul might be a decent pick, but I'm not sure I like him as high as he could go. Nor am I trying to make a joke about the Raiders...he just seems like someone they would place a high value on given how they typically draft.

As opposed to drafting the next Lamar King? Who cares if a player is tall and can do backflips if he often seems disinterested on the field and his skills are completely undeveloped?

There's absolutely no way we won't have the option of picking a franchise QB, LT, S, or DT at #6 with an established skillset. And there's going to be plenty of good talent available at #14. There's certain places in the draft where taking a gamble makes sense, but if you gamble in the top half of the first round...you are making a multi-million dollar gamble.

Last year's #6 pick signed a 4 year, $21 million GUARANTEED deal. The #14 pick signed a 5 year, $19 million deal.

It's not about making a safe pick...it's about committing a bunch of money to a player that will have to be taught how to play football while passing up on a player who is NFL ready AND has similar upside.

I'm not a huge fan of drafting DE's unless they are absolutely sure fire. When Morgan is supposed to be the man and he got clowned by Bulaga it makes me think. No DE at all in an early round and look for a hidden treasure later while going after a stud like Peppers who's a known commodity. It worked with Kerney even if only for a short while as he aged and got hurt.

I recognize that JPP is the most difficult player to scout this year, and I must say, I love him. I'd be more than okay with us taking him at 6.

I've broken down 4 games with him and all I see is Julius Peppers. I'm serious, athletic freak who is strong enough to push through Rutgers OL Davis, and get around him. He's a good kid, who seems to be doing fairly well in interviews. He's had his problems (as a lot of kids from the JC have). People are worried by the lack of production at USF, and I watching the games I have, I think he did plenty that did not show up in the box score.

Here's the rub: DE's take time to develop. Almost none of them are ready to hit the NFL right away. I mean Mario Williams took 2 years, Chris Long's 2nd year towards the end he turned it on. Really, it's one of the hardest positions to transition from College to NFL.

I like JPP over Morgan. However my top 6 for our pick is still: Suh, Mccoy, Berry, Bradford, Clausen, JPP. Anyone else and I'll be very disappointed.
