Powell too- I thought he was considered a good defensive player. I don’t really understand these stats anyway

Re: What is the Clippers' window?
powell's considered a plus defender and watching him play i would agree with that assessment. like, you're not gonna see him lock many people down and if you ask him to guard bigger (which is what portland asked him to do quite often) he's gonna look a lot worse.
and in basketball, if you put "solid" next to a bunch of other solid/good/really good defensive players, you end up producing some very powerful synergies. next year he's almost certainly going to be a part of our best defensive lineups - one of them being covington/batum/kawhi/george/powell, and another likely being zubac/batum (or covington)/kawhi/pg/powell. in these lineups he's mostly guarding the opposing PG and switching with SG's which is about right for his stature and strength, and with the other guys flying around everywhere, he's going to end up looking like a guy who's really playing his part.
assuming health prevails, the team will have built some really special lineups with great matchup versatility, and that's the end result of systematically acquiring guys who can simply play their part on defense and do just enough on offense to not be a zero. the team has come a long way from burning endless resources on useless pieces to surround their stars with.
frank and the front office have come up with a strong blueprint for the foundation of the team and they've mostly done everything possible to add to that. long gone are the days where jokes like jamal crawford, glen davis, and jeff green were the best we could come up with to support our stars. instead, the pieces that surround our stars can play in myriad alignments while generally adding value, and if not, there's a guy right next to him who's a great matchup alternative.
we're in great shape now and will continue to be in great shape with these guys at the helm.

Yeah, Powell is fine on the defensive side. He's a guard that has the length to play with a fair amount of SFs. It's matchup dependent. Portland basically ran him at SF all the time, which was a mistake. (According to basketball-reference, they also played him some at PF ... wtf?)
Anyway, on a team with Kawhi, PG, Batum, Mook, and Covington, it's highly unlikely Powell would be matched up against a big SF.

Ballmer has spent his billions well--although no rings or Finals appearances yet. And let's keep in mind we now have the highest payroll and luxury tax--and likely the biggest and most expensive Front Office too.
We pounced on Powell and Covington in the Blazer salary dump with a combination of FO cleverness and Ballmer Bucks. But frankly, nobody else could afford it. The Lakers would have killed to make that deal but Jeanie Buss has no fkn money. Ballmer shitts money, lol.

So let's not compare to the Donald T. Sterling era--the cheapest, racistest, most classless and disgusting owner in all American sports. Anything Dunleavy and Doc achieved before Ballmer moved in with the deepest and loosest pockets in all American sports was a bloody miracle.
[That and David Stern giving us Chris Paul instead of to the Lakers but that's another discussion.]

I can get the excuses for Powell--forced into playing the 3 or 4 with Lillard and McCollum, then mostly playing hurt with the Clips. I'm not panicking--let's see what he can do.
But the point here is Mook. A negative on BOTH ends of the floor, playing with our STARTERS. Yeez I didn't know he was THIS bad!!

the good thing is that this year the team has other options if he is struggling- just play Covington, Batum, and Mann moreesqtvd wrote:TrueLAfan wrote:Yeah, Powell is fine on the defensive side.
