Clippers will continue to refine lineup and rotations in final preseason game

Lue was able to play a lineup of five wings Sunday — Leonard, Covington, Batum, Paul George and Marcus Morris Sr. For now it is more dangerous in theory than application.

“We don’t know how to play out of it yet,” Lue said, noting that Morris had been able to work with that unit for only one day because of time away for the birth of a son. Tuesday’s practice was “going to be a big day for him just learning the [center] position.”

Leonard said Sunday it was hard to judge the all-wings lineup based on a sample size of only a few minutes.

“There’s some good things we were trying to get done late in that second quarter,” he said. “It got a little stagnant a little bit, but this why we got this preseason.”

The Clippers like that lineup, believing it will allow for offensive mismatches while not requiring a sacrifice in rebounding because of the players’ length. They are leaning on Leonard and George to grab misses and push the ball upcourt as the primary ballhandlers.

Playing small with their second unit isn’t as appealing, however, and without a traditional 7-footer as part of the backup rotation, the Clippers have begun tinkering with substituting out starting center Ivica Zubac early to then return with players coming off the bench. Zubac played the first 3 minutes 30 seconds Sunday before resting and returning late in the first quarter to play alongside subs Terance Mann, Luke Kennard and Reggie Jackson.

“I like playing smaller when Kawhi and PG are on the floor, because they can actually rebound,” Lue said. “So right now, just getting Zu out early, bringing him back with that second unit is kind of our focus.”

I'm SO bullish on J-Wall, our scrapheap superstar. He's killin' it.

But don't turn your back on Reggie. Reggie took Pat Bev's place as our heart and soul. I don't know where he fits into the rotation but I don't think we win if he doesn't play meaningful minutes.

I'm glad Ty is showing him the proper respect. J-Wall is already the better player but Reggie CARRIED this team last year, and IMO remains the team leader.

We have guards now so why is PG still running point?

PG back at it with those dumb TOs in the 1st half. Norm looking really good out there. John Wall will be exciting to watch this year. Moses Brown..... ugh.... I was hoping the Zhou Qi rumors were true.

Fun game but I’m glad Ty called out some of the reckless passing.

Diabate is that guy! Props to Norm in this game. I rip him but I just want to see him play within the offense instead of chucking away. Somebody tell Ty Lue that PG doesn't have to run point anymore. Kennard looks locked in and will demand some minutes. Speaking of minutes I feel that Mann and Coffey will see less time this season unless injuries take place. Boston needs more G League time but I think he'll put it together later in the season. I can see Preston getting some back up minutes at point somewhere down the line. Diabate will be Zu's backup by Christmas. That poster dunk was nuts!!

PG needs as many point guard reps as possible

There were a few careless passes last night that I felt ( from a fan standpoint ) that could have been executed if only there was more focus and not going through the motions. Dumb behind the back passes that led to turnover points for Denver.

Kennard is a great shooter. Need to find minutes for him off the bench.
John Wall looking more fluid and comfortable on the court. He looks healthy and great.

i think it's important to remember that lue's idea of PG as a fully realized player means that he's going to be an offensive hub on the court, whether we signed one, two, or five PG's in the offseason.

the better our best players are, the better the team will be in the end.

Please let Wall stay healthy.

I know he’s a project but I wish they’d find some minutes for Diabate.

Diabate is ahead of every recent rook I can remember except Shai and T-Mann, both of whom I flagged in Summer League and was right about. I don't watch NCAA ball so everybody gets a clean slate. Fi had no feel and Jerome and Sindarius couldn't shoot and still can't. And Brice was lazya$$ garbage EVEN in his 2nd Summer League with his career on the line.

I liked Reggie Bullock right away in SL. Not a lot, but I liked him. And Reggie had an NBA career. Not a good one, but he had a career.

Anyway, I like Diabate. He may only become a solid pro but he's only 20, is 6'10" and I think he's gonna stick in this league. He gets it. I don't know what his ceiling is, but his floor looks pretty good. There are already worse bigs out there right now collecting NBA salaries. I don't know if he's an NBA 5 or even a 4 but like the kid.

So I kind of disagree with the Times. I just don’t think it’s a problem “without a traditional 7-footer as part of the backup rotation.” We don’t need another 7 footer. What we need is a guy that has legit size to play the 4 and 5 and is willing to get physical if necessary. That’s why I’ve mentioned guys like Trey Lyles over and over. That’s why we’re pumped about Diabate. A 6’9”-6’10” guy with good length is fine. Diabate is 6’10.25” with a 7’2.5” wingspan. (He does need to put on some weight; I figure by year 2 he’ll be nearer 225 than 210, and that’s a big difference.) That’s exactly what we need. And it’s exciting that he looks like he’s got both the mentality and tools to play at this level--because we’ve got an opening for a guy like him.
