Warriors, Not Clippers

Post#2 » by Wammy Giveaway » Sun Apr 2, 2023 3:49 am

This new CBA was created primarily to prevent the Warriors from getting more championships through cap circumvention. Clippers have been trying to copy the Warrior's blueprint to of little success; all they have to show for it is a western conference finals debut. I keep coming back to the 2021 NBA Playoffs, but the reality is the Clippers should embrace the life of an underdog more over an endless supply of Benjamin Franklins. As a result of copying someone else, Clippers have joined the Warriors in the CBA bullseye, forcing Steve Ballmer to reconsider his options.

From what little information I've gathered under the new CBA, Clippers would be restricted solely to veterans minimum contracts, in addition to a barter ban on utility assets. This means, if the Clippers go above the 2nd apron, they will not be able to trade draft picks or cash compensation under any trade arrangement, only players. They would need to be under the 2nd apron to be eligible to trade utility assets, ie. Clippers would be forced to blow up the team and enter a rebuild.

Hopefully I can speak to a cap expert and get some clarification on the upcoming changes.

We might actually have to *gasp* develop younger cost-controlled players instead of wasting money on washed fossils! This only sounds like bad news right now because we have a front office who's mediocre in the draft and a coach who only likes old volume scorers. Ballmer should be putting his money towards addressing those problems first.

TBH the rules preventing really high spenders from signing buyout players seems reasonable to me, even though we've probably been the most active team in doing that.

Some of the other rules are pretty restrictive and it starts in 2023-24 season, so not sure what new limitations we may have this coming offseason...

Here's a really good FAQ-

That's the one that jumped out at me. I wonder if anybody else would have wanted Russ. If not, the rule would be very unfair to the player.

For instance, nobody wants J-Wall. Maybe nobody else wanted J-Wall in the first place. I could see non-contenders not wanting Russ either, and all the teams affected by the ban are contenders and were probably the only ones interested.

OTOH, no buyout is gonna choose a non-contender when he can go play for a title. Very thorny situation that should probably have been left alone, but it sure looks like the have-nots ganged up on the haves. [Sort of like politics lol.]

That's a very good point, although I think there are always going to be some successful teams that are not past that second apron (who came up with the term 'apron' anyway? ) The rule could also be further tweaked.

The CBA generally speaking is full of rules restricting player movement, but counterbalanced by the revenue sharing pie which I think provides a fair basis- the rest of the rules are about the pie is divided for the collective good of players, teams, and fans.

In particular, it can be a questionable look when veterans/former stars stop playing for a team (regardless of who initiated it), get bought out for 90+% of their full contract, and then jump ship to a title contender. I think much of the time it's actually a pragmatic decision by the team or mutually decided by team and player, but this also removes the incentive for disgruntled players to try to slack their way to a buyout so they can go join whomever they want (and still get paid almost their full salary.)

1. Shaun Livingston - He recovered from the knee injury to have a solid career and was a key contributor for GS
2. Eric Gordon - Sacrificed in the Chris Paul trade and went on to have a very solid career with longevity. Played in multiple WCFs with Houston
3. Eric Bledsoe - Solid seasons in Phoenix, Starter for the Bucks team that lost to Kawhi's Raptors in the ECF,
4. Reggie Bullock whom Doc sacrificed in order to trade for a player that would have been available to pick up off the street on a 10 day contract. - Started for the Mavs WCF run last year
5. Aminu - Started for Portland WCF team in 2018-2019

There was talk of a Kaman for Igoudala trade long before the Chris Paul trade ever happened.

Imagine what the team of Billups, Gordon, Iggy, Blake and DeAndre (with Bledsoe off the bench) could have done. Iggy might have actually been able to help elevate Aminu and Blake into great defensive players. Olshey had his own personal aspirations though.

If you don't know what player development means, you're not watching closely enough.

Blake will always be the player development poster child in my book. He came into the league as a raw athlete with the narrative that he had no skills and could only dunk. Nowadays, his athleticism is long gone and he's still sticking around in the league purely because of his skills, basketball IQ and toughness. He's reinvented his game several times in response to both his physical limitations and how the sport in general has changed. A lot of this was his own hard work, but some of it was also the result of coaching (Bob Thate in particular).

If you bury younger players on the bench and never give them a chance, they'll never know what they need to work on, and you miss out on the player they could have been. This is how we end up with washed fossils like Morris playing big minutes.

Again proving the point. Let's take a look.

--1. Shaun Livingston was getting 30 mpg and averaging 9.2 ppg and 5.1 apg. Not bad, not great. When he blew up his knee, the Clips didn't re-sign him, and he bounced around with EIGHT teams [and WASH twice], and never averaged better than he did with the Clips.

--2. Eric Gordon was the price for CP3, the best player in Clipper history. He never averaged better than the 22.6 ppg OR 4.4 apg that he put up in his last year as a Clipper.

--3. Eric Bledsoe, maybe. But he was only going to be a backup here behind CP3 and got starter's minutes and starter's money at PHX. It was more a business decision than a basketball one. Me, I could never live with his terrible assist-to-turnover ratio of under 2-to-1 [1.6 with the Clips, 1.875 with the Suns]. Out of the NBA by age 32. Hardly "the one that got away."

--4. Reggie Bullock played only 79 games over the next THREE seasons before he became a mediocre starter [11.2/2.5/3.5] on a Detroit lottery team, his third team. He is now on his SIXTH team in Dallas.

--5. Aminu? You're kidding, right? Besides, he was part of the price for CP3 and never averaged 10 ppg [ONCE!] until he landed in Portland, his FIFTH team.

NBA's Second Apron In New CBA 'Designed To Break Teams Up'
MAY 5, 2023 12:15 PM

The NBA's new collective bargaining agreement has made maintaining a title contender over an extended period of time a difficult proposition for any franchise, especially mid to small market franchises. The strain could be felt first by the Milwaukee Bucks, who face a critical offseason with the free agencies of Brook Lopez and Khris Middleton.

"I also just want to say with the player movement that happens and the various rules, it is hard to keep a team together for six to 10 years like it was before," said Brian Windhorst on his podcast.

"And now it has become that much harder with these new rules," interjected Tim Bontemps. "These new rules are designed to break teams up. That's what they're designed to do."

"The thing about the new rules, this second apron, which the Bucks are going to be headed for... if you hit the second apron, it buries you. You can't sign anybody. You can't really trade for anybody. Your draft picks are automatically kicked to the back of the first round. It is a target on the Clippers, Lakers and at least the Nets when they started negotiating it, the Nets have since broken down. It is an absolute target to keep these teams from being able to maneuver. That's what the Bucks are potentially facing here. They are facing the fall out of the Warriors winning the title and the Nets and the Clippers paying so much money in luxury tax."

Yes, please. Whatever it takes to force Ballmer to break up this current Clippers team. Its obvious they are never going to get it done, time to move on. And take Lue and Frank too.

Not sure Clipper Nation realizes how stuck Ballmerville is under the new CBA. He can't go forward, he can't go back. $90M worth of superstars are decrepit and can't win 50 games and get a top seed, let alone stay healthy into April for the playoffs themselves.

The rest of the team is over 30 [Powell is 30 this month] too, except for Zubac and Mann, who at 26-27, look to be no more than capable but unspectacular journeymen. And the G-Leaguers are so far unplayable--the difference between them and our only legit prospect, 22-year-old Bones Hyland [plus+2.7] is painfully clear.

[per 100 possessions]
16 Norman Powell -3.7
17 Jason Preston -4.2
18 Moussa Diabate -5.3
19 John Wall -6.6
20 Brandon Boston Jr. -8.3
21 Amir Coffey -8.6

As for the PF toxic waste dump, I suppose RoCo could maybe bring back something of value but Batum is on the books for $12M next year and Morris for $17M. After their disastrous playoffs, I can't even imagine how we could get anyone to take them off our hands.
