Those are all great points. I am still betting he will opt out, as even if he takes a paycut for next year, he's going to get better long-term security in a multiyear deal, where he also gets to choose where he signs.

If he plays out the next year, who knows what his minutes will be vs. Thornton, especially since by then the Clippers will be looking to transition to Thornton as starting SF. Maggette is also not get younger.

I'm guess here, but I think Corey is weary of all the constant trade rumors and uncertainty over his future with the team. If he opts out, he can always sign back with the Clippers so it doesn't automatically close that door (but more likely than not.)

What is Corey due next year? I guess if it's nearly 3 mil over the mid-level, it's around 9 million?

so unless maggette wants to take a near $3 million paycut to sign somewhere else for the mid-level exception, he's either A) not going to opt out, B) hope the clippers give him a raise, or C) hope he can get the money he wants in a sign & trade. choice c is probably the most likely, but also the most risky. corey can only sign with teams the clippers want to do business with, heavily limiting his options.

corey can take a risk also by not opting out, assuming there will be more teams with cap space next summer. if he stays for a year he has a chance to increase his value by proving his health to the rest of the league for another year and has a chance to play an important role on a healthy, contending clippers team next year.

i'm just saying, we might be jumping to conclusions on corey's opt out.

So Corey can play the last year of his contract for $8.4, then go into the FA market after that.

Or he can opt out now, and as loflin3hree5ive says could probably land something at around midlevel exception range. But he is in the prime of his career and could get a 4-5 year deal.

The kicker here is that I am wondering how comfortable Corey feels about what his role and minutes would be next year. If his minutes and stats go down, his value will decrease.

Are there any rules preventing his agent from talking to other teams, to try to gauge what kind of interest and offers he might get? If he can get a good multiyear offer from a decent team, I think he will go for it. But if the interest is lukewarm, then opting out would present a different but signficant risk as well.
