What should we do with the 7th pick?

Post#1 » by mkwest » Thu May 22, 2008 8:31 am

There's a lot of uncertainty heading into the summer for the Clips. After dropping a spot in the draft we have one less opportunity to improve the team. Gordon and Westbrook look to be the current primary choices if we stay at the 7th pick in the draft. Depending on how the workouts go, there's a possibility that some players rise/drop but that probably won't benefit us too much considering who would be good fits for us. Do we try to trade down and pick up another player as well? Do we attempt to trade up? Although, the asking price to trade up may be more than what we're willing to give. A Maggette package with the pick could not be finalized until free-agent signing period begins.

What's everyone's thoughts at the moment?

Right now, I see the Clippers deciding between Westbrook and Gordon still. I would pick Westbrook but I can see why people would choose Gordon.

I think the Clippers would look to trade though. It would be nice if we can resurrect that Mike Miller/Maggette trade, while also swapping picks, but I don't know if we really want to reach for Mayo or Bayless if he's still there when Memphis picks. Trading picks with NJ sounds good if we're looking to pick up Augustin, but I don't see who NJ would take trading up (Joe Alexander?)

So.. Westbrook for me.

... there's also that Kevin Love idea. HmmMMMmmm. When Brand is on the bench, Love and Kaman? Or when Kaman is on the bench, Brand and Love? It's interesting, but I guess an answer at guard is more important.

Gordon is going to be a major player. That, and I think he'll be able to step right in and be effective without much pressure on him. EG has got my vote.

If the Clippers keep the pick then I think they should select Gordon. He can play right away and is a serious scoring threat and plays D. We could get lucky and he might be the shooter we need.

If we're set on drafting Westbrook, I think we should go ahead and make the deal with NJ. With the 10th pick, he'll still be on the board and with the 21st we could get a quality SG.

However, if we are drafting Gordon, we should keep the pick.

I agree, Westbrook seems a bit high at #7. I like him (I'm a UCLA alum), but I don't see him as an immediate impact player in the NBA. I sorta get the feeling he'll be a solid NBA player, the kind you are happy to get with a mid-first round pick.

No way, Mayo isn't worth that kind of price. He isn't a PG anyway.

I went with drafting Gordon. Both guard spots desperately need some help. I like Mobley and feel that he's a warrior and all but he's the only real 2 on the team and is going to be another year older. With Gordon we get a strong athletic 2 guard that can shoot and get to the hoop. We'd still be left with the option of moving Maggette for one of the points who will be on the block (Calderon, Hinrich, Ford, etc.).

I may be in the minority, but if he was available at 4 I'd probably do it top-3 protected.

EG is just a younger version of Mobley but w/o the gay tendencies.

I say we draft that kid over Westbrook

I wouldn't mind drafting Gordon because of our current circumstances. I'm not sold on Westbrook and I think he comes up because of UCLA and the connection that some of our posters have.

I also wouldn't mind us draft Chris Douglas-Roberts. We would trade down to get him and I think he would be able to helps us.

The thing with Gordon is that he inbetween a 1 and a 2. He is tallented but I'm wondering how his game will translate to the NBA.
I've been an LA Clipper fan since 1998 and that will never change. I hate our new logo and jerseys!

Mayo may end up behind some of the other picks, but in my opinion, he's got a lot more superstar potential that the others. I share your skepticism that he'd be available at the #4.

I'm a little surprised to see Galinari not get more love.

I think a lot of people are skeptical of drafting him (Gallinari) because of our last foreign project, Korolev. =p

^ Plus we don't need another SF, with Thornton on our team.

We need a player in the backcourt. Period.

Let's say we swap Maggette for Hinrich or TJ Ford or whoever PG, who would we draft now? Would you draft KLove if he's still on the board? Or go with Gordon, since his natural position is SG anyways? I still like Mobley as a starter. When he's healthy, he's good.

I'm on the Westbrook bandwagon. If we can trade down a couple spots and grab him, we get a combo guard who can play great defense and can drive into the paint at will. His jump shot needs a little work, but I feel he's much more of a complete player than Gordon.

How about this for an idea:

Trade Tim Thomas, Brevin Knight, #7 for Hinrich & #39.

Why for the Clippers: You get proven player on your most glaring hole on the roster, who should bounce back after a subpar year, while you lose bad contract of Tim Thomas and clear playing time for Thornton.

I'm a Bulls fan and I'd do it without thinking.

This way you have:

Hinrich/Livingston
Mobley/Ross/#35
Maggette/Thornton
Brand/#39
Kaman/Fazekas

You have very good starting 5 and Thornton as 6th man backing up both Maggette and Brand. You don't have any depth at all, but that's fixable in free agency.
