Sam Cassell

Post#1 » by loflin3hree5ive » Wed Jul 2, 2008 5:37 pm

I've been thinking, and I realized that it makes sense that Sam Cassell could return next year to the Clippers. I know a lot of people might be displeased with Sam for leaving the Clippers, but history shows that collecting twilight players to fill out your bench usually bring good results.

Sam was obviously frustrated at times during the playoffs where Doc Rivers would sit Sam a lot in favor of Eddie House. Doc has said he wants Cassell back, but after Sam did his job of getting a ring, and getting his boy KG a ring, I'm not so sure Sam would want to endure a season in chilly New England and possibly collect a good handfull of DNP CD's instead of setting himself up for a coaching gig after his playing career is over.

Sam has stated he wanted to coach the Clippers since he re-signed with LA two years ago, and previously re-stated his desire to coach this spring after he had left for Boston. If he's really serious about doing so, he can get a head start by being on the floor with newcomers Eric Gordon and Baron Davis. Assuming Brand re-signs, our 5 man core of those three players with Chris Kaman and Al Thornton are all under contract for at least four more seasons. If Cassell takes over the coaching reigns of the Clippers, that's his team right there. Why not give yourself the edge being around the team you will/want to inherit? It's how Avery Johnson got his job.

Sam will also get a kick out of having a second chance to live up to big expectations of the Clippers will face this season. Expectations that the Clippers couldn't meet in 2006-07 coming off their Cinderella playoff run. Sam may still struggle to find minutes in front of Brevin Knight and possibly Shaun Livingston just like he would in Boston with Rondo and House, but Sam has a great opportunity in Los Angeles, whether he recognizes it or not. I just know that when Sam saw the news last night, it without a doubt crossed his mind returning here. It just makes too much sense.

This is the main point as to why Sam would come back to the Clipps. His dreams of coaching (for the Clippers) are probably getting bigger by the second since he just won another ring, and figures he has accomplished all that he could as a player.

I could definitely see this happening, and this might also make Brevin Knight (who is an expiring as well) expendable. If we were able to grab Sam from FA, we could try to package Knight with TT in a package to grab Barbosa, since Suns fans need a backup PG and are in love with TT. Just a thought.

I did say when we bought him out last year, that I had a feeling he would come back next season.

I don't want to see him back next year after he made the Clippers buy him out for a mil, even though they were doing him a favor by letting him get another ring.

I guess i'll take him back if he signs for the league min. Other than that...thanks for the playoff run sam.

I think this would be great for both sides, as long as it's only for about $1mil.

I would love to have Cassell come back. It would strengthen our bench, he would be a great addition. And I'm sure he would come cheap.
I've been an LA Clipper fan since 1998 and that will never change. I hate our new logo and jerseys!

You can have him back, please, take him. I cringed every time he entered a game.

One man's trash is another man's treasure. Celtics fans hated him for coming in and becoming a chucker. We loved him because he was the only guy who could create his own shots off the dribble and actually had the balls to take the shots no matter what--even when Dunleavy chewed him out afterward.

I would love to have Cassell back. After we take care of business with Brand, we should go after Cassell and Posey. Posey could be a modern day Horry.

Sam Cassell could return next year or in 10 or 20 years. The guy doesn't look like he ages at all.

I think his gas tank is running extremely close to empty by now.

A few years back he was already old, but the age basically affected his PT and health- when he was on the floor he was still a great clutch player.

But now after a couple of subpar season, I really don't know. I don't think he could duplicate the playoff performance he had in 2005, much less the entire regular season.

Finally, with Baron Davis the need for a 4th QTR clutch leader is basically gone, Baron will be on the floor not Sam.

All that aside, I would love to have him back, and in a suit in years to come.
