Gordon's game finding its tune

Post#1 » by mkwest » Thu Jan 8, 2009 8:21 pm

Gordon moves into 4th for the NBA.com rookie rankings for week 10.

At 6-foot-3, Gordon is shorter than the average shooting guard. But his muscular frame moves well horizontally, making up for anything he's giving up vertically.

Gordon's game brings to mind the best aspects of other "undersized" guards, who did nothing but overwhelm opponents. Think Ben Gordon's stroke, Allen Iverson's quickness, Rodney Stuckey's strength and Travis Best's defense.

Gordon's teammate Marcus Camby just wants the league's referees to learn the rook's name so he can start getting to the line more often.

"Hopefully as we go on through this season he can start getting that respect and have it carry over year after year because he's going to be in the league a long time," Camby said.

Eric Gordon: an NBA rookie on the rise

Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said Gordon is "learning how to be a great offensive player.

"He just comes at you with strength, explosiveness," Carlisle said.

Those two performances gave Gordon 129 points the past five games, the best stretch for a Clippers rookie in 26 years. The last Clippers rookie to score that many points in five games was Terry Cummings in March 1983, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

"The more games you play, the more confident you get," said Gordon, who takes the court again tonight when Los Angeles plays at San Antonio with Broad Ripple and IUPUI product George Hill. "It's all about having fun for the most part.

Eric Gordon is one of three rookies who have scored 30 or more points in a game this season. He and O.J. Mayo are the only rookies to do so in consecutive games. Only Mayo has scored more in a game.

Thanks, mkw.
It's such a treat to have some heartening material to read at this particular moment, and to be able to focus on one of our true bright spots.
EJ and Camby between them keep me watching at the moment. I am immensely grateful to both of them, and grateful for both of them on this team.
And to have Gordon carrying the load he does recently in his rookie year is amazing and wonderful.

I'm in a fantasy keeper league, and I did not have a draft pick (traded last year).. When I saw Gordon still available at the 9 spot in our draft, I quickly traded my 2009 pick, for the 9 pick, and another first round pick in 2009. Turns out the pick I traded for belongs to the guy in last place in our league, giving me most likely a top three pick this coming draft. Better yet, as you have obviously all realized, Eric Gordon is sick. I've been following his every boxscore more or less since he was at Indiana, and I am loving every second of his 'arrival' on the NBA scene... I've also noticed that he has been playing probably the most minutes since he was put in the starting lineup, no small feat for a rookie...

I'm just glad that he's finally getting the recognition he deserved being the 7th pick and all.

Probably cause he barely got any minutes for the first month of the season. I think he would have a legit shot at being ROY if he played like this at the beginning of the season.

Today my son traded Iverson to get EJ for his tournament team (with friends who hold NBA2K09 tournaments.) I sent him the article mkw provided to us here.
We think he has a superb future, and his present is pretty impressive as well.

His confidence is the key factor to his development. When players come back, I'd like to see him have the same amount of confidence in his game.
