Blake's defense

Post#1 » by Da_Mane_Man » Fri Nov 19, 2010 7:33 pm

how is it?

i haven't had a chance to watch any of the clippers games this year but just looking at his stat sheet, it seems he's not really getting after it on the defensive end. he has 4 blocks total on the year and only 9 steals. you'd figure a big man as athletic as he is would be able to get at least a block per game. is he trying to stay out of foul trouble so he's not contesting as many shots?

His defense has been pretty damn horrible to be honest. I guess you expect that from most rookies though. He just doesn't seem to put much energy in on the defensive end, mostly to avoid fouls by the looks of it. He has been schooled a few times, even by Milicic

I think he will be good eventually, hes just gotta be a bit more aggressive.

Coming in I don't think Blake was known for his defense. I'd say he's better at steals than blocks, I don't think he's ever really going to be a shot blocker. I think as time goes on he'll get better at defending players in the post.
I've been an LA Clipper fan since 1998 and that will never change. I hate our new logo and jerseys!

Blake isn't real long, so he may never average even 1 bpg in his career, but he has very good lateral quickness which sets him apart from other PFs not considered good defenders because of a lack of shot blocking ability. He is able to provide good help defense by picking up offensive charge fouls pretty well so far. He should be able to contest shots in the low post better as he gains experience. He is similar to Karl Malone in shot blocking ability, Malone averaged less than a block per game over his career.

He's a poor defensive player to be sure right now...pretty much everyone on this damn team is...

Yeah it makes me wonder about the Dunce's praise for him 2 years ago "he's the most advanced defensive rookie I've ever seen"...that's because he was guarding other CLIPPERS.

I'm not so interested in blocked shots as I am his team defense. His rotations, weak side help, and decision making are all weak. But that's to be expected from a rookie. Combine that with Bledsoe and Aminu and Jordan and it's easy to see why we are such a horrible defensive team that regularly gives up uncontested layups in the half-court set. It's hard to get any one of these guys to play solid defense, let alone get them to play as a coordinated unit.
