Blake Griffin to have 1st ever Audio/Video Trading Card

Local tech firm makes first video trading card

Imagine a Kobe Bryant trading card that not only has all his playing statistics but 20 minutes of video of him playing in Lakers' games.

That's what Recom Group, a California technology display manufacturer, has created for Panini America, the $1.3 billion sports and entertainment collectibles company.

The HRX (Highlight Reel Xperience) card is the first video-audio trading card. Panini America will release in June limited edition cards featuring Bryant, NBA Rookie of the Year Blake Griffin of the Los Angles Clippers; Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunders; and John Wall of the Washington Wizards.

Collectors won't know if they are buying a pack with a video trading card coupon in it. But Panini expects the cards to show up in the secondary market selling for hundreds or thousands of dollars, Howarth said.

"Blake Griffin's rookie card sold for $1,300 on eBay," he said. He wouldn't even guess what some collector might pay for Griffin's gold video trading card.

This is crazy, I never would have guessed that with technology we could have a video basketball card. I might have to buy a pack to see if I get one

You'd have to take care of that much more than just any normal card. I bet if the video goes out the value drops immensely. I wonder how thick it is?

It'd be nice to have, but I'd probably look to sell them. I used to collect cards back in the day when I was little, but stopped somewhere between 94-95. This one sporting memorabilia shop was going out of business and had everything like 70%. My brother left without me to go get 1 of 3 Jordan rookie cards they had. He comes back and gets me and I see some clown in front of me buying the other 2. I was pissed and lost my passion for them back then.

My best card was a SPX autographed Jordan card with a piece of his jersey. It was valued at $1000 at the time, but there was a crease at one part of the card. So I only managed to get around $400 or $500 for it.

I still have all my rookie Odom cards even though I don't like him anymore. But yeah I haven't collected cards for over a decade or so.

I also wonder how it'll be powered. coin battery perhaps? I would expect it to be rather thick if so. I can't think of any other batteries that are smaller. Perhaps a tiny lithium-on with a solar cell? :dontknow:

That's interesting how trading cards keep evolving. I remember when I used to collect cards back in the day, they had this one insert (I think it was one of the SPX cards) where you tilt the card from left to right, and there was a hologram of the players face, which would blink or smile.

Now there's actually computer chips in them. I'd like to see them for myself.

Limited-edition video trading cards -- packed with 20 minutes of career highlight footage -- will begin hitting store shelves in June. The first ones will feature four basketball players: Lakers star Kobe Bryant, Blake Griffin of the Los Angeles Clippers, John Wall of the Washington Wizards and Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder.

For example, he said, the video cards "are actually still on cardboard."

But the cards will be slightly bigger than normal and the electronics inside make them several times thicker. A screen will fill two-thirds of one side and will play clips of on-court action, to be accompanied by music and possibly voice-over commentary, Norden said. The screen can be turned off when you've had your fill of slam dunks and chest thumping.

With 2 gigabytes of storage space, the cards -- which also come with chargers -- can also be used to store music or documents, Norden said.

They will be limited inserts in Panini's Totally Certified Basketball card line, which will include hundreds of traditional cards of active and former NBA players. A pack of five retails for $20 and will be available in sports memorabilia shops around the country.
