The National Basketball Association announced today that Los Angeles Clippers' All-Star point guard Chris Paul has been named to the NBA All-Defensive First Team. Paul garnered a total of 33 points (13 first place votes, seven second place votes) and becomes the first player in franchise history to be named to the team.
Joining Paul on the NBA All-Defensive First Team are forward LeBron James of the Miami Heat (53 points), forward Serge Ibaka of the Oklahoma City Thunder (47 points), guard Tony Allen of the Memphis Grizzlies (33 points), and center Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic (41 points). Ibaka and Allen earn First Team honors for the first time; Allen was an NBA All-Defensive Second Team selection last season.
Paul led the NBA in steals per game (2.53 spg) and total steals (152) during the 2011-12 NBA season. This marks the second time Paul has been named to the All-Defensive First Team (2009). Paul was also named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team in 2011 and 2008.

Media votes for DPOY
Coaches vote for All-Defensive
Coaches felt that Dwight was the better defender at C.

I don't know why you're shocked. I wasn't surprised at all. The media rewarded Tyson for his defense as a Dallas Maverick. While I congratulated him on his winning DPOY, I also questioned it. He was good defensively this season but not better than Howard. The media shouldn't be allowed to vote for such things.

Tyson completely changed the defensive level on the Knicks when he got there. The Knicks went from being one of the most mediocre defenses to average to above average.

Mike Woodson was part of that and also the addition of Shumpert, and the increased role of Jared Jeffreis. Chandler was definitely part of it, but it wasn't only him. While he has the nice story of changing New York's defense, he still wasn't a higher impact defender than Dwight Howard on the season.

I know I'm late on this but congrats to CP3 for making the all defensive team. I had no idea that media voted for DPOY. The media knows nothing about defense and that's all I'll say.
I've been an LA Clipper fan since 1998 and that will never change. I hate our new logo and jerseys!

Thank You MEDIA Voters for thinking so!

Kind of strange considering how poor we defended the 3 ball and how ofter we got beat on the perimeter

Actually the coaches are the ones that vote for the All-Defensive team. So I suppose the coaches think so.
SA series was poor for the team, and Conley had some three's, but letting Memphis shoot three's as opposed to some other shots might have been by design. Over the season, individually he defended the 3PT line quite well actually. As a team, well, there's a lot more than goes into that than one player's ability to defend three's.TheNewEra wrote:Kind of strange considering how poor we defended the 3 ball and how ofter we got beat on the perimeter

Re: Chris Paul named to NBA All-Defensive First Team
it was all season though we had some of the worst perimeter D in the league as far as keeping players from storming the paint and rotations. Paul was a part of it so its just hard to imagine him getting all team defense.

Re: Chris Paul named to NBA All-Defensive First Team
I think Paul and Bledsoe did a pretty good job. I don't think Paul should have been first team, he should have been second, but his ability to get steals on the ball made some guys with mediocre handles quite useless for their teams in a primary ball handler role (current Gilbert, Gary Neal, etc). The majority of the time he did a good job jumping in front of and fighting through screens, staying in front of his man, and attempting to run guys off the 3PT line. A lot of the penetration issue was poor reads on pick and rolls by the big men, which is why it generally looked better when Reggie and/or Kenyon were on.
The 3PT defense problem was a a mult-factorial issue.
The first was the team not being in tune with each other in regards to rotations, which is an everybody thing, not just a guard thing, shooting big men maybe killed the team more than shooting perimeter guys.
Second was that with the small guards, contests just weren't as effective. You can't always get to a guy before he shoots, but you can contest a shot and make them rush it if you have length. Randy Foye already was disadvantaged, but Chauncey Billups, Mo Williams, and Paul when he was guarding a SG, really were not the most effective at bothering shots. When you are 5'11"75 with short arms, you are 5'11"75 with short arms, a 6'5 or 6'6 guy will easily shoot over you if he really wants to.
Also, when the team needed to play solid defense down the stretch of games, Paul was consistently one of the best defenders. When Paul and Bledsoe were on together in the back-court, the defense actually looked competent at the guard positions.
