Gary Sacks

Post#1 » by LACtdom » Thu Feb 6, 2014 10:34 pm

As he is a somewhat longshot to be poached by the Cavs I was wondering what you guys think.

The Cleveland Cavaliers fired Chris Grant on Thursday and elevated David Griffin to interim general manager.

Sources say the Cavaliers have done background checking on Mark Hughes, who is currently director of pro personnel of Mark Hughes.

Jeff Weltman, who is currently with the Toronto Raptors, is also expected to receive interest.

Gary Sacks is also an under-the-radar possibility. Sacks is currently general manager of the Los Angeles Clippers, but Doc Rivers has final say on personnel moves.

Chris Wallace, Glen Grunwald and Jeff Bower are also available candidates with previous GM experience.

I also read that he came second in voting for GM of the year last season.

he is going to leave. he had no more power which sucks since Doc seems to be pretty bad at picking personnel. dudley, jameson, sasha, hedo (showed signs of potential), morris, MULLENS

If you are gonna trust a guy to run your franchise and arm him with two #1 overall picks and two #4 picks and he comes away with Irving, Waiters, Thompson and Bennett, he failed. Waiters and Thompson are solid players, but not core building blocks. Regardless, Dan Gilbert has to be difficult to work for. Why on earth would he sign off on hiring Mike Brown again? That was a terrible hire, it was a terrible hire for the Lakers.

I wouldnt be worried about Sacks leaving to work for Dan freaking Gilbert, until he heads to Cleveland for an interview.
Plus, why would I want to go to the NBA? Duke players suck in the pros.

Gary Sacks has done well for the Clippers but I was excited about the idea of Doc having the power to choose players. In theory he could choose players based on fit and team needs. However Doc is either keeping hush about big moves or he really sucks at recruiting players. Redick and DC are the only successful recruitments so far.

From what I've read, expect to see Sacks leave by the summer.

The jury is still out on Doc in a management role. His in-season signings haven't instilled a ton of confidence, but his presence in attracting free-agents in the offseason is a different story.

The team needs to step up on the drafting front. With limited cap flexibility (i.e. no cap space), the team the MLE and the draft to gain something without giving something up. The Full MLE gives us a hard cap and limits what we can do in trade. The mini-mle establishes a soft cap, but less years and less overall money. In other words, there's less margin for error. The Spurs are a prime example of drafting well despite being at the bottom of the draft. I'm not expecting a Tony Parker or Manu Ginobili, but players like George Hill, Dragic, Splitter, Scola, Udrih, Salmons, etc. have all been selected by them (whether for themselves or other trade partners) with either the 26th pick or lower. That's very impressive.

letting Gary go will be a huge mistake. i can't think of any successful HC/GM in any sports in a long run. if anything, players don't respond well when the HC that is supposed to be your father figure in the locker room is the same guy who will get rid of you the moment you underperform... that is EVEN if you had enough time, energy, and ability to do both jobs well.
ehhhhh f it.

Starting to miss Oshley some but even still Doc would of took majority of the power. Things may change if roster holes are not filled.

Coaching in the NBA is a full time job and Doc shouldn't have to juggle two roles. I don't mind him having final say on player acquisitions but he should reduce his role. Maybe during the offseasons when he has more time he can do the recruiting like what he did with JJ.

agreed. i wouldn't mind him having the last word, but to be a full time GM and a HC is impossible task to do well.

It's not so much that the Clippers want to let him go as it is that he wants his own gig. He was with the organization for 19 years or so and finally got an opportunity when Olshey left. After 11 months as the man, he swallows his pride and Doc gets top billing. I like Gary and would like to see him stay, but I understand if he leaves for a better situation.

So who is the co-op Gm when Sacks leaves will it be 100% Doc. Or we promote from with in the franchise.

Return to Los Angeles Clippers
