Ralph Lawler Night: Monday, March 9th

Post#1 » by Ranma » Sat Mar 7, 2015 11:40 pm

Kudos to the Clippers for doing this. Ralph Lawler is not only the voice of the Clippers but has been its heart and soul during his 36 years with the franchise. A loyal soldier, class act, and genuine guy. Clipper fans are truly fortunate to have been blessed with such a wonderful presence in our lives.

:reporter: :usa:

Jill Painter Lopez, Fox Sports West (3/6/15)
Q: How much better is your job now that Clippers are winning and playing well?

A: It's better because I have a happier wife. My wife is the greatest fan there is. She was a Clippers season ticket holder when I met her in 1979. She goes to all the games with me, home and road. She is a diehard Clippers fan. I have a happier wife, and a happier wife makes a happier life, there's no question about it. That's probably the main thing. Plus, I'm happy for Doc and his staff, they work so darn hard. I'm happy for our new owner, our new team president and all the new people that have become a part of the organization and some of the old people who went through some of the tough, tough days and are now reaping some of the benefits. It's much easier to sell tickets, easier to sell sponsors, much easier to keep everybody happy because the Clippers are doing so well. And for the players who work so darn hard, I'm thrilled for all those people. But again, from my standpoint, I'm thrilled when they hand out an Emmy and we get one. I'm thrilled when they hand out a Telly (Award) and we get one, which we just did. That means our TV crew and I personally are doing a good job. That's all we can control. We get rewarded there, and I'm happy. That's like my Super Bowl and NBA Finals.

I don't like to go to games during the week, but I'm pondering going to this one for the tribute. I especially want the Lawler t-shirt!

I think there should be a Ralph Lawler night every hear. Hopefully this can be the start to an annual tradition.
I've been an LA Clipper fan since 1998 and that will never change. I hate our new logo and jerseys!

I heard it was Ralph Lawler night so I bought tickets. They are giving away a shirt? Is anything else special going to happen?

I wish I could go to the game tonight, but I have personal committments to take care of, but I'll definitely watch on TV tonight.

Much like many of you, Ralph is a large reason on why I became a Clipper fan; I saw the piece that Ranma linked the other night, and just great interviews all way the around. I liked the parts about how Mike Smith got into being a broadcaster, and having Ralph tutored him for Mike's first few years with the Clippers (Mike did radio play-by-play for a few years until he replaced Bill Walton on TV; the few times I heard Mike on radio, for a novice, he wasn't too bad). I know a few folks (and I mean fellow Clipper fans) don't care much for Mike, but I actually like hearing break-down certain plays. One thing I don't care much for lately, is that Ralph and Mike have started to get a bit homerish in recent years; all team announcers are homerish in some way, but I used to be able to count on Ralph and Mike to be just as critical and objective as well.

All said however, I'm beyond happy that Ralph is being honored in such a great way, and he truly deserves it. He was (and still is) the only positive constant about the Clippers, especially when players and coaches came and went, and having to work under a piece of excrement like ol' Mr. Tokowitz. Ralph said he could have worked elsewhere, but I can understand his point about not wanting to uproot his family, and possibly move around a lot.

Congrats and Happy Ralph Lawler Day to everyone!

Tons of cool things coming out about today. Super happy for ralph. He is one of the only reasons I stayed a clipper fan. He made miserable teams entertaining.

Clippers try to get in touch with their past

How do the Clippers celebrate a history when they have a history that might not seem worth celebrating?

They do it with nights such as Monday, when “Ralph Lawler Appreciation Night” turned a ho-hum early March match-up into one of the most eventful night’s in the organization’s history.

A dozen Clippers from the past four decades, from Coach Gene Shue to Marques Johnson, to Gary Grant to Corey Maggette, gathered to honor the voice of the organization and the link between the bad old days and the promising current ones.

“It was so nice to see everybody out here,” Rivers said. “It was good that they want to be here. I don’t know about the past; maybe, they didn’t want to be a part of this. But, maybe now they do.”

It’s all part of a plan by Rivers and the Clippers to develop stronger relationships with the team’s past, troubled or not.

“I take this very seriously,” Rivers said. “Other than (winning) the title, it’s probably the thing I want to do here. This team deserves it, and I think we can get it done.”

Now, they’re working on getting them to come back. Team officials have reached out their vast alumni, extending invitations to be some part of the organization.

“This organization is one that wants to build itself into one where players come back because there’s a family atmosphere,” Glen Davis said. “Everybody wants to strive for that. It’s good to see the organization pay homage to the people who have contributed a lot of time.

“… Mr. Ballmer paid a lot of money for this team. He wants to be a part of something bigger than himself. It’s important, especially for him, his legacy and what he wants to be a part of.”

“We’ve got to build something here. When I took this job, that was one of the goals, and a main goal. We don’t have any history. We have to build our history,” Rivers said. “We have to bring ex-people back – players, coaches, front-office guys – and honor them. We have to do it. I think it’s important, but we had to start with Ralph.”

Rivers said the team has talked about retiring Bob McAdoo’s number and wants to honor long-time general manager Elgin Baylor.

Bob McAdoo and Randy Smith are 2 former players that should have had been honored in the past imo. McAdoo was technically never a "Clipper" and spent his days with the franchise in Buffalo. For that reason, he never got his due with the Clippers despite being a Basketball Hall-of-Famer and the only MVP in franchise history.

Smith played the majority of his career in Buffalo, but played 2 seasons for the "Clippers" in San Diego. He was the original "Iron Man" with 906 consecutive games played before AC Green took that title from him. To put that into perspective, DJ is the current leader at 304 games. He was also a 2-time all-star (MVP in '78), franchise leader in games played and in scoring. Unfortunately, he's no longer here with us if we were to be honored in any way.

Both have been inducted into the Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame.
