Draft Picks?

Post#1 » by devinbrady » Fri Apr 10, 2015 6:47 pm

Do the Clipps have any picks this year, or did we give them away for this stellar bench we have? Sure love Dekker from Wisconsin, think he could be a good fit.

Future Pick Details

Our 2015 first was compensation for acquiring Doc from Boston.
Our 2017 lottery-protected first is headed to Milwaukee. You know why.... :sigh:
Our future second rounders have been traded with differing degrees of protections.

Pretty sure we don't have a pick until 2016 2nd round

I was wondering about our pick situation also. Giving up Dudley and a 1st to Milwaukee sucks, and this year we could buy a 2nd pick. We could also look at some "draftable" guys who don't get picked and bring them in as free agents. I guess I won't get too excited about draft night this year.

Purchasing First-Round Picks

Post#5 » by Ranma » Sun Apr 12, 2015 1:25 am

To compensate for Doc's incompetence, I want Ballmer to buy first-rounders this year to either package in trade-ups or actually draft players. The NBA Draft is a valuable resource that has been under-utilized by Rivers and his cronies in the front office. The only hindrance is the salary slot with respect to the Clippers' salary cap situation but an escalating cap should hopefully alleviate some of that concern.

unfortunately, even for someone as smart as steve ballmer i think it will be a few years before he realizes exactly how much doc has been torpedoing his management duties.

i don't really see a whole lot of things changing in the meantime, and i would be extremely surprised if doc was ousted, which is about the only way the team will stop giving our first-rounders away for free.

can that actually happen?

will someone give up a 1st rounder for some cash?

I do not see buying a top 10 draft pick and we do not have enough assets to trade without giving up our core. cp3, blake, dj, and jj have to stay. plus how many top 10 guys play on a high level team and make a difference. not very often. I do not see that player in this draft. I think we have to play this hand out with this core group and hope the support group can somehow help. I wish we had better options but it is what it is.

Maybe Brooklyn will give up the 29th, since they're paying a massive bill for a treadmill team, and have been trying to shed salary all season? I'd love to pick Tyrus Jones there if he were to be available (which he probably won't, after his final 4 showing) to learn from CP3 himself.

Another long shot option would be trading whatever we can buy + a future pick (+ Crawford as salary filler if needed) for someone like Stanley Johnson if he falls out of the top 10.

Long shot though, knowing our FO, our offseason will probably consist of signing more washed up veterans who were good in 2009 like Jameer Nelson and Tayshaun Prince...

Technically, yes...realistically?

Technically, it is possible but I don't know how likely it is. When the $3 million cash limit in trades was first established, I was surprised to see teams actually selling their draft choices even as those selections have been in the latter part of the first round. The value of draft picks have risen since then in the salary cap era, but a possible jump in salary cap space due to the large TV deal and NBPA push might provide for possibilities.

However, like mattd13 and QRich3 said, it is practically unfathomable for a lottery pick to be sold. Even mid-first-rounders are unlikely unless the draft class is considered weak. I just want the Clippers to canvas the league to see what, if anything, is available with regard to draft pick purchases.

You never know and hope your team's scouting staff will do its job to find diamonds in the rough, which is admittedly not promising with Doc's staff. Heck, you don't even have to look far to find players recently drafted outside the lottery who've already proven to be significant or key contributors.

2015 Draft Picks Statuses

Post#12 » by Ranma » Sat Apr 18, 2015 10:46 am

Well, at least the loss of the 2015 first-round selection for signing Doc was minimized to the 28th overall draft slot. We might even come out ahead should Ballmer be able to purchase a first-rounder in the upcoming draft since it shouldn't be hard to improve upon the just forfeited pick.

Eric Pincus, Los Angeles Times (4/17/15)
The Rockets and Clippers finished with identical 56-26 records. By winning a drawing Friday to break the tie, the Rockets received the 27th overall pick, which will go to the Lakers as part of last summer's Jeremy Lin trade.

The Clippers will pick 28th overall, although that selection will go to the Boston Celtics as part of the agreement that allowed Coach Doc Rivers to leave Boston for Los Angeles. The Clippers' second-round pick (57th) will go to the Denver Nuggets, for Cheikh Samb.

Too bad we dont have our first round pick this year, because we would be near the range of the draft's best perimeter defender Rondae Hollis-Jefferson. 28 seems a bit too low for him to slide, but we would be in striking range. Thats a player we desperately need, even if he cant space the floor.

Still, I would love to see Ballmer buy a 2nd or two and roll the dice on some guys.

Fact of the matter is, with the cap rising so much in the coming years, 1st round picks are worth their weight in gold. Gone are the days of teams selling them for $3 mil cash.
Plus, why would I want to go to the NBA? Duke players suck in the pros.

Apparently Flip has said they aren't keeping both of the early 2nd rounders they own (31st and 36th picks). Good time to get you checkbook out Mr.Ballmer, I heard you made quite a few hundred million by just sitting on your ass last week. Like Tucson says, Hollis-Jefferson or Delon Wright could be available there and I think they could be pretty good fits on a cheap contract.
