Early Hook from Jam Session

DJ looks like he's heading for an early exit from the dunk contest with a score of 41.

Needed to be clean.

GRIII can phone in the 2nd dunk and it will be him and Jones in the final.

Don't Look for an Invitation Next Year

Post#24 » by Ranma » Sun Feb 19, 2017 3:11 am

DJ received a 43 with a rim-rattler and both his dunks were arguably the most deflating on the night for the audience.

Dang! Nice dunk to wake up the crowd by Derrick Jones, Jr.

For someone who dunks a lot you'd think DJ would have something a bit flashy up his sleave that he does at training.

Sucks Gordon is injured. He struggled to get the height.

GR III Another Doc Dismissal

Post#28 » by Ranma » Sun Feb 19, 2017 3:27 am

Slam dunk champ, Glenn Robinson III, was yet another guy Doc passed on in favor of C.J. Wilcox in the 2014 draft.

DJ is more of a lob catcher. Big guys generally don't win these because there's only so much you can do when you're 7 foot tall and it doesn't look as impressive when you're in the air. Like DJ's turntable dunk was actually really good but if a guard did that, it would look way better.

More Hype Than Sizzle

Post#33 » by Ranma » Sun Feb 19, 2017 5:25 pm

What you said is generally true, Guyver, but let's face it: DJ's dunks were lacking in creativity and he didn't execute them well. He's shown to have extraordinary athletic ability for a big man who's capable of performing impressive dunks in warmups but he just didn't show up on the big stage, plain and simple. He's like a baseball player who hits long bombs out of the stadium in batting practice but lacks game power in not putting it on display in actual games. DeAndre likes to talk a big game without following through and he seemed interested in just the recognition and being a part of the festivities rather than actually competing to win.

The most impressive big man of the night was Kristaps Porzingis.

DJ finishes with 6 points on 3/5 shooting (2 missed 3PA's), 3 rebounds, 2 assists, +8 in 12 minutes.

Only Cousins played fewer minutes (2) after being shutdown to be moved in a trade to the host city.
