Looks like Ballmer wants to add some public basketball courts as well as a hotel to the project.

I thought the lease with Staples was only 2020 or 2022. First time hearing 2024

It is until 2024 but Ballmer can easily buyout whatever years are remaining on the lease when the arena is ready.

My thinking is this. AEG makes anywhere from $5 to $10 million off the Clippers but Ballmer can make an extra $30 to $40 million a year having & controlling the revenue in his own arena. In order to buyout the lease, you just come up with a number that allows both parties to meet halfway. I say $20 million. If the arena is done by 2022, you buyout the last 2 years for a total of $40 million.

AEG jumps all over it because $20 million per season is more than the $5-10 that they are currently making off the Clippers & Ballmer does it because $20 is less than the extra $40 he can get by getting a quick start in the new arena.

I live in Inglewood myself. The traffic is going to be insane pretty much every night. Would Ballmer also reach out to the Anaheim Ducks to move in as well?

Also with a new arena added to the mix of Staples, The Forum, The Pond, Hollywood Bowl, and the other numerous venues around town.. somebody if not a couple these spots are going to lose out big time. There's only so many concerts, performers, and artists that actually draw and can fill up a large scale building like an arena.

Ballmer has said that this will be a basketball specific arena meaning if an NHL team moves in, we will be stuck with another Islanders trying to make a go of it in Brooklyn deal that falls flat on it's face.

I will agree that I'm not wild about the fact that the new rail line doesn't go anywhere close to this place. I really hope that MTA follows up with the rail spur proposal that will see an extra line go down Prairie from Florence all the way to the green line location. If that happens, you can be sure that traffic will be cut down in a big way.

Keep in mind that New York has MSG, Barclays, Prudential Center in Newark & the renovated Nassau Coliseum. It compares similarly to LA:

MSG=Staples/Main building in the heart of downtown housing the main NHL & NBA team plus the WNBA
Prudential Center=Honda Center/NHL only building that hosts basketball games from time to time
Nassau Coliseum=The Forum/former NHL & NBA building that has been renovated to be a concert only facility.

The new Clipper arena would be the LA equivalent of Barclays Center. Plus you have to take into account that the Islanders have already gotten the green light to build their own arena at Belmont back in Long Island so even if the Clipper arena gets built, LA will still be one behind NY.

Pretty much summarizes the article that I linked although I found it interesting that he said construction would start right after the EIR. This would hit my timeline of 2022 which means there is hope that the last 2 years at Staples can be bought out. Butts obviously can't say that for legal reasons but it's a possibility and a good one at that.
