Did Capela agree to another team's offer sheet that HOU matched? I didn't know it went down that way. I thought HOU stepped up and made an offer, which Capela accepted.

i could be wrong about this.
No one had money to give him an offer sheet, at least not at the level of Houston, the contract he signed was basically the original Houston offer from the start of free agency. He tried to see if he could get more on the market, but there was no such thing, especially since you have to give another teams RFA at least three years? So that also took ou the teams with cap space that wanted to retain some for next off-season. If he rejected Houston, he would have had to take the QO and remain a Rocket. If he signed a lower offer somewhere else, they would instantly match, so either way he was saying, just depended on how much money and how much risk he was taking if he went the QO way.

That's $18M per ;). That's why DJ took the one year deal, the market this year was not the best, "sucks" for Capela as much as having a guaranteed $80M and possibly $90M sucks, but that's life.

I think Cuban giving DJ his $24M to walk away from the Clips was a statement, not a business deal. That was where I was going with that.

I'd have been much more positive about DJ at $̶1̶7̶M̶ $18M per year.

Yea, the teams were trying to figure out a trade, right? Then when they couldn't figure out anything that worked, Mavs probably wink, winked DJ that they would match his current contract so he could comfortably opt out and not lose money.

Might work out for DJ though, there's a lot more money in the market next season, but then again he's not that young, so if he's looking for a long term deal, he'll likely need to take a smaller yearly.

paid them both

paid Jamal and Austin

we were capped out, with the CP3-Blake window rapidly closing, and you could only exceed the cap with your own free agents

paid everybody

VERY interested in DJ's market value next summer. I don't really count Cuban's play for him either in 2015 or this year. It was an ego thing.

Well, a placeholder starter, anyway. Doc pulled him off the reject pile, in one of his better moves.

As for WeJo, possibly GM Doc's worst move ever. But in that crazy $ummer of 2016, it must have been adjudged that was WeJo's value on the open market, and we were desperate to keep our FAs. If we overpaid a little [3 years/$18M], there was a gun to our head. We were capped out. We could sign our own FAs or league-minimum wagers. Nothing in between.

Hell, Jeff Green got 1 year/$15M that summer. Things were nuts. And WeJo had played OK.

Wesley Johnson is earning himself a nice payday

https://clipperholics.com/2016/02/05/clippers-wesley-johnson-is-earning-himself-a-nice-payday/

Instead, it’s Johnson who’s emerged as the Clippers’ best non-J.J. Redick wing, adjusting to a role that requires very little of him on both ends of the floor in terms of need, focusing his efforts into concentrated areas: three-point shooting, versatility, defense. At 5.9 attempts per, Johnson’s averaging the least shots per game in his career. Inversely, he’s a hash high enough to qualify for highest three-point attempt per game for his career at 3.8, allowing for a 3-point rate of .641, meaning he’s shooting threes and doing very little of everything else.

The three-point shooting averages alone aren’t rave-worthy, hitting 34% from range, down from 36% and 35% in back-to-back seasons with the Lakers, but Johnson is more than making up for it thanks to his percentages from the corner, currently hitting 50% of 84 attempts. To put it simply, he’s doing enough to force defenders to respect him from the area, and in 2016’s NBA, teams pay money for that.

Yah it's a lot easier to see now that Luc's had 3 full good seasons in a row, but Luc was out of the league when training camp was about to start and Doc gave him a camp deal, he was coming off a few injury riddled years and not many people thought he would be able to come back as an NBA rotation player. Even after the first year when he ended up being key in that SF position, not a lot of people thought that would've been sustainable and portable to another team that didn't need just any warm body at SF like those Clippers did. There weren't a lot of teams queuing to match that one year minimum deal.

I'm seriously wondering where does he fit in the rotation. Either him or Mike Scott will have to ride the bench
