Numbers like these have been displayed all season and it’s simple from the eye test that Zubac makes the team better defensively
Well I don't disagree that he makes the defense better.
His NetRtg is -1.0. The offense is 6.4 pts/100 better when he's off the floor, and defense is 5.4 pts/100 better. So there is something about the lineups he plays with and their offense, and like you said, he is playing with starters.
Playing against starters also means playing with starters. Depending on the strength or lack thereof of a team's bench, playing against, and therefore with starters can actually make you more productive than otherwise.
So far, it is true that Zubac is played more when it is favorable for him and has been benched when it might not be. That helps you out when you get to avoid bad matchups, which you can do playing <20 mpg.
Outside of the 8 games we have had with Kawhi and PG the starters have not been a favorable lineup. Even beyond that he was even more productive outside of his recent fouling slump.
When the guy playing the fewest minutes is second in scoring among the starters should indicate the struggle the rest of the guy had going. Beverly came into the season on a massive shooting slump and guys like Patterson/Shamet/Harkless had struggles putting up points so it was Kawhi iso or the pick and roll or bust.
Lou and Harrell are brought in to be a scoring surge against teams second units so I’m not shocked the numbers are higher
Since the Houston game, when PG/Leonard first played, the team has a 104.4 Ortg and 104.0 Drtg with Zubac on, +0.4 NetRtg. For Harrell it is 115.2 Ortg and 102.9 Drtg, +12.3 NetRtg. They are better on offense and defense with Harrell since both stars started playing together,
Kawhi on the court with Zubac since he’s been playing with George, the team has a 102.0 Ortg, 101.5 Drtg, +0.5 NetRtg. When Zubac is off, the lineups with Kawhi have a 119.0 Ortg and 100.4 Drtg, +18.5 NetRtg, So the numbers aren’t supporting Zubac on either end, and offensively, there’s just something up with the lineups with him on.
