Gortat's terrible and although after a historically bad start Bradley's quietly picked himself up off the floor [12 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 2.5 apg 40%/41% in his last 10 games], I don't see him netting a FRP, even a crap one.

That is true. I just thought maybe a future conditional pick based on the team making the semis or finals.
My eyes glaze over when reading alternative stat (not advanced stat) narratives that go many paragraphs long. If you can not make your point in 2 paragraphs it may not be a great point. :D

DJ Is Gone, Move On: Why Bring Him Back?

Post#1024 » by Wammy Giveaway » Mon Feb 4, 2019 1:20 am

Yeah, DJ is your longest tenured Clipper, the first player ever to stay with a historically snake-bitten franchise beyond nine years when other players who arrived in the red-white-blue were smart enough to ditch the club for reasons all pointed to the evil Donald Sterling. But he was a part of the failed Lob City project which David Stern helped created by screwing the Lakers out of a Chris Paul deal. They had a 3-1 collapse to the Rockets when they should have taken their lead and position seriously. As 3-1 omens go, the Clippers were punished by being forced to trade Chris Paul to the opponent who made it happen, then trading their no. 1 draft pick and franchise boon Blake Griffin to the Pistons for lesser parts mid-season. The trades of Paul and Griffin set them back to the Sterling-era days, even with Steve Ballmer now in the stands posing for the camera and Jerry West advising the entire organization on how to run a basketball team properly within their exclusive roles and not to be a screw-up in the face of pressure and adversity.

I oppose the DJ return. It paints the Clippers as a team unwilling to look towards the future, that the past albeit short-lived and full of heartbreak was the best they've ever felt in terms of success when their entire life was full of failure to being with anyway. Letting DJ go was a mistake that reared its ugly head with the lack of rebounds to prove it. Even though they had good intentions, all Jerry West ones, the Clippers heart and mind were not in the right place. They feel that their players were taken away from them, and would do anything to get a chance at a do-over and setting things right. This move reeks of nostalgia and longing for the good old days, but those days will never come back. Clippers need to learn how to move on, and it requires them to let DJ be. If he joins their arch nemesis Big Brother Lakers, so be it. It's a part of life.

Jerry West is their general advisor, don't go against his word just because you still have feelings for one of your old soldiers. Make a better future than rebuilding a future that could never be. All the Clippers are doing with getting DJ back is tempting fate.

Sixers fan here in peace. Really rooting for you guys to get AD.

What is the best package you guys can put forward for him while still maintaining max cap space for Kawhi?

Russo Summarizes Clippers Discussion from Lowe & Arnovitz

Post#1026 » by Ranma » Tue Feb 5, 2019 2:32 am

While I appreciate the amount of work Russo put into writing down most of what was said in the conversation, I find it highly suspicious that he left out the part where Arnovitz referred to Tobias as a "3rd option", especially in light of Russo recently taking issue with me and everyone else who disagreed with his take of Tobias being a max-worthy player. I've called Russo out for as much on Twitter.

If I’m the Clippers I swing big and try to pair AD with Kawhi.

I have thought a lot about this.

I would start by doing the following 4-team deal I just posted on the T&T Board:
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1800352

Then I use those picks to do the following:
Harris/Lou/SGA/Robinson/Thornwell(filler)/‘19 First from PHI/‘20 OKC First/‘22 First (Unprotected) for AD/Hill

I listened to the pod. It is interesting. It got me thinking if LAC going to be so busy trying to chase Kawhi/KD if a team like Utah/BK offer Harris a big deal on July 1st would they bother to try to keep him with one of the max slots or just have Gallo be the Harris replacement.

I mean, I'm fine paying Tobi, but not signing off on a max deal. I just think our most likely move, with Kawhi, is bringing back Tobi with a pay bump.
Plus, why would I want to go to the NBA? Duke players suck in the pros.

Matching Max to Keep an Asset?

Post#1030 » by Ranma » Tue Feb 5, 2019 6:57 am

From all indications, the Clippers really like Tobias Harris and are looking forward to bringing him back, which to me means, they're inclined to match almost any contract offered to him. Does that mean the full max allowable for him? I have my doubts, but I can see a circumstance that dictates doing so.

The vast majority of opinions on this board--including my own--don't think Harris is even close to being worthy of a max offer. Having said that, the Clippers might consider doing so if he were offered such a deal by an interested club like the Jazz if only to retain an asset that could and would be traded later on. Of course, this would depend on how the Clips do in free agency.

In the unlikely event that the Clippers totally strike out in free agency this summer, then I can see them matching a max offer to keep things going while the front office regroups and plans a different course of action, which would include packaging Harris in a trade for a star player. Obviously, if the Clips sign 2 max free agents, then Harris is unlikely to be retained, especially if he gets a max offer elsewhere unless Danilo Gallinari is traded.

However, if the Clippers were to sign Kawhi Leonard as most expect, then I can see the organization contemplate retaining Tobias on a max deal, if it comes to that, in order to bide time before Anthony Davis or Giannis Antetokounmpo actually hit free agency within the next couple of seasons after this one.

As an unrestricted free agent, Harris can sign with whomever he pleases regardless of what the Clippers are willing to do, but he seems to enjoy his time with the organization, so there's presumably little risk of him leaving without giving the Clips the opportunity to match or exceed an offer he would get elsewhere using his Bird rights. I get the sense that he'll go to the highest bidder, so I don't expect a hometown discount.

I share the same opinion as that of both Zach Lowe and Kevin Arnovitz in that Tobias is a fallback option who should be available to the Clippers once the dust from free agency settles in the off-season. I'm sure the Clippers are counting on him not receiving a max offer, but I'm guessing they'll re-evaluate the situation based on the circumstances I've outlined in this post to determine whether signing him to such a deal would be an albatross that could prevent other maneuvers.

I think the Clippers should atleast ask what it would take to trade for AD since he is willing to resign. Makes no harm just asking

I looked up how many teams are in position to have cap space more than $25m a year, which seems the minimum Tobias is going to seek.
Nets, Knicks, Clippers, Lakers, Kings, Hawks, Bulls and Pacers.
Mavs, 76ers, Magic, Suns and Pelicans could have space too, but it seems unlikely at this point.

He doesn't fit Bulls' timeline, Hawks have John Collins, Kings have Marvin Bagley and Justin Jackson.
Knicks and Lakers probably won't want to settle for Harris when they are in chase franchise player level guys.
So it would either be us vs. Nets or we engage with Harris' agent and other teams who want him on a S&T, which could bring back assets back.
I am not really fan of signing him to a big contract, in order to trade him in January. 1- it won't look good for us after Blake 2- it is risky

Now is the time to move Danilo's contract to a contender. Maybe Danilo and Pat Beverly for Paul Milsap and Trey Lyles. Or Danilo for George Hill and Thon Maker. Picks would obviously be in these trades as well.

I like Gallo and Beverly to the Hornets for a bad contract or two and their lottery protected pick, if they fail to get Marc Gasol. It doesn't leave the two max FA spots open, but that's a stupid idea that we're never gonna need, it leaves enough for one of them (Kawhi?) and a couple small salary FA's more. And it gives you another pick to either keep building or add in a trade.

Call me crazy but... Could we have a shot at AD? Not now but when it comes to July. We could package our 1st this summer (if we get to the lottery), Jerome, LouWill, Harrell, those picks that the Sixers gave us, Gallo... Not all of that of course but could a package that intrigues the Pelicans be made?

Don't think so, it depends entirely on how they see Shai. If they think he's got star potential, maybe. But very few people think that, career starter yes, make an allstar or two in his life, possibly. Franchise player type of star, don't think anyone buys that.

Other than that, we have a bunch of nice stuff and a good pick. Several teams are gonna top that.

I think people are going to hate this idea, but I’m going to throw it out there anyway. I don’t think we’re going to get AD. I just don’t. I *do* think we’ve got a really good shot at getting Kawhi (depending on how the Raps season turns out). And I have a trade thought that sounds freaky but, IMO, does a ton for us

Danilo Gallinari
Jerome Robinson
Landry Shamet
Sindarius Thornwell
PHI Pick (lottery protected through 2022)

For

Bradley Beal

Washington fans may hate this. Hear me out. Beal isn’t staying. He’s gone in two years. Sorry, but that’s it. The Wizards won’t have a SF next year, and needs to sign their recent pickups—both frontcourt players—in the offseason. They should resign Satoransky—but he’s as much a SF as a SG. Combine Shamet and Rome with Satoransky, and you’ve 60+ minutes covered at SG and SF. Gallo covers more. And between Shamet and Rome—look, one of them is likely to end up being a pretty good NBA starter. Maybe both. Now you’ve got them for three years each at low, low cost.

And Gallo is an expiring deal; he and Ian Mahinmi and Dwight Howard will come of the books after next season; that’s over $45 million. The Wiz would have—wait for it—cap space. Who knows, maybe there will be some catastrophe and the Sixers will miss the playoffs in the next three years. This is actually a good deal for the Wiz.

For us? I like Gallo. Maybe Shamet will show amazing things and I’ll like him more than Beal. But I really, really doubt it. Gallo is a really good player; I like Beal better. We’re asking about the second FA to pair up with Kawhi? This locks that in. Is Beal as good as Durant? Of course not. As good as Klay Thompson? Of course n … wait a second. Beal is really good. He’s on a manageable deal for two seasons after this one. There were questions about whether Tobias was worth a big ($25 million plus a year) deal. Beal is *better* than Tobias. He’s a positive difference maker; he moves the needle for his team in the way that I just don't think Tobias did/does. In the last six years, Beal has missed a total of 60 games. The Wiz were 27-33 in those games. They were 220-186 in the games he played. This year, the Wiz are 13-11 in the games without Wall—and with Beal.

Playoff performer? Check. He’s got career averages of 22.7/4.4/3.7 on .440/.363/.823. In 2017, when the Wiz took the Celtics to 7 in the second round? Beal averaged 24 a game in that series on .585 TS%. He saved his best for final game; 38 points on 12-22 from the field and 5-10 from three. He’s a good defender. He can play some PG if necessary. Getting back to the Klay Thompson thing:

Code: Select all

MPG   PPG   RPG  APG  STL  BLK  TO   FG%   3P%   FT%   TS%
Beal      37.0  25.0  5.1  5.2  1.4  0.8  2.9  .473  .352  .801  .573
Thompson  34.2  22.1  4.0  2.1  1.2  0.7  1.6  .472  .396  .810  .572

Klay is better from deep—but Beal is very good from there and goes to the line more, so they’re actually equally efficient. Klay is (probably) the better defender, although Beal gets more steals and blocks and is good on that end. Beal turns the ball over more—but rebounds better and is a better playmaker. And is three years younger.

So I don’t think it’s clear which one is “better.” That’s the caliber of player we’re talking about here.

Some people would say that losing Shamet and Rome mortgages our future. Yeah—except Beal is only 25. He’s 7 months older than Trezz.

And here’s the thing. That trade? It puts us at around $46.5 million next year. We’d have well over $60 to spend on free agents. Two supermax players? We’d have to drop more money. But a supermax and a guy coming off his rookie deal—or even between years 6 and 9? We could clear up a little and swing it. And with Bev and Zubac having low cap holds, we could resign them. We’re talking about a lineup of

C—Zubac, Trezz
PF—
SF—Kawhi
SG—Beal, Lou
PG—SGA, Bev

…with $25+ million dollars to spend. And the Miami pick. And our pick. Hell, start Motley at PF--that’s a 50 win team without any other pickups and not counting the draft picks.

You're not crazy, but its still a long shot. With AD's connection to Rich Paul, Lebron and the Lakers theres no way you risk that rental, especially when we already have cap space to sign 2 max contracts. He may have his heart set on the Lakers tbh and nothing can be done about it. To me it feels like a 'cherry on top' kind of trade, where you can only do it if you have AD's commitment and you know its impossible for the Lakers to get better FAs than us.

That would mean we have to sign Kawhi and they have to strike out, meaning KD, Kyrie, Butler, Klay, Tobias, Klay, Kemba & Middleton all go elsewhere or stay with their current teams. Thats very unlikely when the Lakers only need 1 of those names for AD to see a path to a contender with Lebron. The trade itself isn't complicated its just Gallo + picks + young players, but too many things have to fall the right way for AD to be a Clipper.

I don't believe we have any reasons to engage with Wizards for Beal until we strike out with the FA targets we have. We worked hard to create cap space for two max contracts, aka superstars (not klay thompson).
Beal is a pretty good player. an all-star no doubt. But we need MVP caliber guys. Also Wizards have no reason to deal Beal, unless they are committing to a rebuild. in the east they are still relevant.

I don’t think Washington is relevant in the East. If your definition of relevant is a .500 team--they’re (well) below that. If your definition is making the playoffs—they’re in contention and it’s kind of a possibility—but they’re 11th in the conference right now. If your definition of relevant is “improving”—they’ve not doing that either; they’ve gone from 48 wins to 41 wins to, probably, around 36 wins this year (if they go .500 the rest of the way…which isn’t a great bet either). The Wiz are in the worst sort of no-man’s-land—not good enough to make the playoffs, not bad enough to get a super high draft pick to get a savior or significant help, too near the max to get help via free agency.

They’ve also got the problem of Portis and Parker—who need to be resigned. Jabari Parker has a team option for $20 million—but why let him go? He’s a good player, and they wouldn’t gain any cap space by letting him go. The Wiz are over $90 million next year … and that’s without Dwight Howard’s player option, trying to resign Satoransky, and without the qualifying offers for Dekker and Portis. Portis is going to make (a lot) more too—they’ll need to lock him in. And that means they’re done with cap space for two years after this offseason.

Unless, that is, they trade Beal and get a faster expiring big contract, some youth and players (and, man the Wiz need bodies out there—if they let Dekker go, and Howard picks up his option and they resign/keep Satoransky and Portis, they’ll have 8 players under contract … including this year’s draft pick), and a future pick(s). If Washington was on the rise and didn’t have the financial shackles they do, I might agree with you. But that isn’t the case. They aren’t getting better. They aren’t a happy team. The salaries of Mahinmi and Wall alone next year takes up $54 million; Parker and Beal and Howard would put that at $106 million. They have zero financial flexibility for the next two years as it is.

The main this is whether Beal wants to go—because if he does, he’s got value. The Wiz said they want to keep him. Which is what they said about Otto Porter. We could up our offer if we had to so that it included our pick this year, along with Gallo, Rome, and Shamet. If you’re going to rebuild, an expiring contract on a player who fits onto your current team, as well as a lottery pick, and two good young players is a pretty good deal.

I agree with you about wanting/needing an MVP player or two. But, keep in mind

Gallo+Rome+Shamet+This Year’s Pick = $31.5 million (about)
Bradley Beal = $27.1 million

So this doesn’t hurt our ability to sign players. It increases it.

Last thing—I’d love to get two max players. I think it’s highly unlikely. LeBron had (past tense) the charisma and ability to pull in multiple players. I don’t see Durant or Kawhi, as great as they are, being like that. It’s possible that someone will get two big FAs; if it happens, I think we’ll be the place it happens. But I think it’s (much) more likely that the FAs will be spread out and we’ll get one.
