Draft Rumors

I'm not sure what to think about the rumored promise to Ben Bentil by the Clippers. Both DX and NBAdraft.net have him in the 2nd round, so I assume he's been killing it in the private workouts but I don't see the appeal of going after him in the 1st round when you can possibly nab him or Brice Johnson in the 2nd round. Plus, neither address our need for a small forward. Hey, I'm a proponent of BPA, but again, neither Johnson or Bentil stand out as such right now but that would be dependent on how the draft actually plays out. I'm still not even caught up on draft materials or rather I haven't really started (a little pooped from the MLB Draft and other stuff) but I'm concerned with buzz around the draft already.

Assuming we did make a promise to Bentil, does that mean that we no longer think we have a shot at either Taurean Prince or DeAndre Bembry when we were supposedly split between the two previously? Or how about talk of both Denzel Valentine and Timothe Luwawu also falling down into our range? Seems kind of odd that we'd put ourselves in another Yaroslav-Korolev predicament when there seems to be so many things in flux. Plus, what if we did successfully trade up the draft board? Does that promise now carry over to the higher draft slot? This doesn't make sense to me. Of course, that's the whole point of the scuttlebutt and smokescreen being spread by other teams and player agents.

Speaking of red flags, I'm not keen on drafting Valentine or Tyler Ulis given their respective medical concerns. I wasn't too enamored with Valentine even before his reported medical issue, but he is a productive player who would make sense for teams with multiple picks in the opening round like the Boston Celtics. I don't feel the Clippers can afford to take such a gamble right now.

Also, the Lakers are rumored to be considering both bypassing Brandon Ingram and trading away D'Angelo Russell for another top-5 pick. Personally, I think it would be a mistake on both counts. I get why Ben Simmons would be the more appealing option given his package of talent and versatility, but like Lamar Odom before him, I'm not sure he has the inner drive and commitment to make the most of those gifts to be a great player in the NBA. Ingram, on the other hand, may need to be developed especially with regards to his physical stature, but long-term I see him being the only prospect worthy of being drafted 1st overall in this draft class. With regard to Russell, I think the Lakers would be passing up on a golden opportunity to have both Ingram and Russell grow together to be the faces of their franchise, but at the same time, trading him for the upside of Dragan Bender, Marquese Chriss, or Jamal Murray could be decent value if they want to cut their losses with Russell if they feel he has lost the locker room.

As I've mentioned before, a private pre-draft workout can be enlightening like it was with Kobe Bryant and Anfernee Hardway during their respective draft years, but it can be a dangerous distraction from scouting reports from game action such as were the cases with Michael Olowokandi and Darko Milicic.

Update: It's odd that NBAdraft.net would delete the tweet mkwest cited only to post it again later on with I believe the addition of "
strong" in front of "possibility".

It varies year-to-year, but nbadraft.net seems to be a little more accurate in their final mocks. As far as content goes, DX blows them out of the water.

At the end of the day, it's all rumors until it's official.

Ugh, I really hope we're not stupid enough to waste a 1st round pick in Bentil when we could probably get him buying a late pick in the 2nd round like we did with Dawson.

The NBAdraft.net tweet seems like it's pure speculation on their part though, so hopefully it's just that.

it's why i ask about how good that site is with credibility. taking bentil in the first round when i haven't seen a single mock of him anywhere but in the second seems absurd. almost every guy who is in the 25-33 range seems like they can fill a really solid need for us.

NBAdraft.net Trying to Follow in Foot Steps of DX

Yeah, logically speaking, it doesn't make sense to Korolev ourselves when names on the draft board still seem to be moving around on a daily basis. What I suspect is that NBAdraft.net sees what DraftExpress (DX) has become and wants to follow suit in copycat fashion. As I've mentioned before, DX grew beyond just providing in-depth evaluations but also becoming a fairly reputable source in providing inside information and scuttlebutt, however, I want to point out that I used the term "reputable" instead of "reliable".

DX is known to have access to NBA personnel evaluators who've been more than willing to relay information provided to them whether it is true or purposely false; NBA teams have become more prolific in dispensing smokescreens and tidbits of misdirection. Hence the difference between their early mock drafts and their latest ones where the former are more representative of their own evaluations while the latter are more a product of the latest "news" being floated around as I pointed out previously.

I suspect NBAdraft.net, in an effort to elevate itself more to DX's level as both a source for draftniks to follow and tool for NBA employees to use, is knowingly and willingly providing information and rumors to help further the cause of connected movers and shakers in the industry. In this case, NBAdraft.net is serving as an agent for God Shammgod by trying to generate buzz and urgency around his client Ben Bentil in an effort to move him up the draft board while also putting Shammgod's name out there to attract the attention of NBA employers as well as impressionable prospective clients for future drafts. Nothing generates more cursory interest than the impression of competitors' interest.

I missed when DeJounte Murray moved into the top 15-20 in the mock drafts. I guess he must have had some really good workouts because he was ranked in the second round before.

Murray's stock has been rising because of his offensive potential. Murray wasn't highly regarded out of high school, but showed so much potential with the Huskies that he felt comfortable making the leap after one season. He looks to join a long list of guards from the Seattle area who have made it to the NBA, which includes Brandon Roy, Jamal Crawford, Nate Robinson, Tony Wroten, Terrence Ross and Jason Terry.

"I have a lot to work on and I have a lot to get better at," Murray said. "As I got closer and closer to Jamal [Crawford], he told me to embrace the process. He told me to have fun, do it all and take your time. At the end of the day, have fun. I can't get too comfortable. I have to improve like everyone else. I just have to work hard and get better at everything, that's what I want to do."

http://www.sltrib.com/home/3984106-155/utah-jazz-washingtons-dejounte-murray-impresses

Both mock drafts currently have us taking Bembry at 25th, which I don't mind at all. Prince is down to 31st in NBADraft.net's mock draft and is at 20th on Draftexpress.

Also wasn't Tyler Ullis ranked much higher earlier? He's in the second round according to both of those mock drafts now. He could be a Clippers target if the team isn't sure Austin can be retained, but he's a PG you can't ever play together with Paul. I just read that Ullis is dropping over a hip issue.

Kentucky guard Tyler Ulis is said to have a pretty significant hip issue, which some believe may require surgery down the line. A medical red flag combined with his size, Ulis could slide deep into the first round or even over into the second depending on how team medical staffs view his situation.

If I had to guess, that looks like a 14-15 year old to me, which might put his real age right around 20-21.

Funny, I think I like Georgics Papagiannis better than Zhou Qi, his floor is much higher (ceiling is probably lower though-Marcin Gortat?.) But mocks have him going around #50.

There's a nice profile into Taurean Prince's personality and background here: http://sportsworld.nbcsports.com/taurean-prince-nba-draft/

I know we shouldn't get obsessed with one prospect, specially one that might be out of our range, but the more I know about him the more perfect I think he is for this team. He is falling on the mock draft mostly because of his terribly inefficient season scoring-wise, which was caused by having a role way over his abilities, having to create offense by himself, etc. which is exactly the one thing we don't want him to do. The guy says he wants to show he can handle the ball in the P&R but that can be persuaded out of him when he gets into a veteran team. He's still a good shooter when he's open, and a good defender with the size and mobility to switch and defend at least three positions. We've needed exactly that for half a decade and haven't been able to find it.

There hasn't been a SF of his characteristics close to our drafting range since Paul is here, or even a veteran we could trade for/sign. The opportunity of adding a guy like that might not come round again in years. I'd do anything to get him, trade both picks, any of our non-core guys, even do some gymnastics with future picks if need be. I really hope we have the chance to snatch him.

There's a very interesting chart over at Fansided with a calculation of the value of each draft pick, which might help with expected return if you try to package picks to move up:

http://fansided.com/2016/06/16/nba-draft-trade-value-chart/?utm_content=buffer527d8&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer

According to it, if we package the #25 and the #33, what we should expect more or less in return is Boston's #16. Which is higher than I would've said, but it'd be perfect for us. Obviously this is a fixed model and it doesn't take into account that Boston has a million picks in this draft and won't be interested in adding more, but even Memphis' #17 would probably be enough to get Prince or another player significantly better than what'll be available at #25. And maybe Memphis would be interested in adding two prospects, if they are aware that they'll need to start rebuilding soon?

Prince seems like the prototype for an effective 3 and D player in the NBA, with a very high floor. Not sure what his upside is, but the fact that he was still improving in college bodes well.

He would be an ideal pick for some playoff team who got a later mid-first through trade. A worse team in that range might choose to draft for potential instead. Don't know where he's slotted now. Boston, Charlotte, Philly pick right ahead of us. If he makes it past 20, he could be available to us?

Shot creation, athletic ability and ++ size and length are some great qualities to possess as an NBA PG. He has yet to fill out as well, I think he holds a ton of potential and I liked what I saw from him at UW.
Plus, why would I want to go to the NBA? Duke players suck in the pros.

how do you reconcile that he has so many similarites to crawford in skill type and he'd have virtually no court time behind crawford/rivers though?

i don't see crawford going anywhere and i could see him wanting to play for a few more years.

Catching Up with Juan Hernangomez

Post#200 » by Ranma » Tue Jun 21, 2016 8:42 pm

I'm not going to be able to read up on all the profiles, but Hernangomez has been on my radar. He looks to be just out of reach at our current draft positions, but he seems like a Doc Rivers type of player who I would actually be happy to have on the team. On the other hand, Doc is being noted for not preferring Euros as draft prospects despite sticking with vet Hidayet Turkoglu past his expiration date; I guess vet is the key word with Hedo. In any case, I hope that Hernangomez is among the targets the Clippers are eyeing in their efforts to trade up the draft board.

I'd like to check out more reference materials including those on Taurean Prince, but right now, I'm partial to both Juan Hernangomez and DeAndre Bembry. Ideally, we'd somehow move up from 33rd overall into the teens while retaining 25th overall for a shot at drafting both with Boston and Denver having multiple 1st-rounders and willing to trade.

Mike Schmitz, DraftExpress.com (1/18/16)
Halfway through the ACB regular season, it's safe to say that 20-year old Juan Hernangomez (also called Juancho Hernangomez) has been the revelation of the Spanish league thus far. The 6'9 face-up power forward is putting up historic numbers with Estudiantes for a player his age. His 11.3 points ranks as the highest per game scoring average for a player under 21 since Rudy Fernandez's 13.7 ten years ago. Additionally, his 20.6 PER ranks is second best in the last decade as well (behind Nikola Mirotic), eclipsing some big names (Ricky Rubio, Tiago Splitter, Serge Ibaka, Kristaps Porzingis, Ersan Ilyasova, and his older brother Guillermo/Willy [drafted by the Knicks last June]) in the process so far.

The intrigue around Hernangomez begins with his productivity playing at the highest level of European basketball, but continues with his strong physical attributes. Standing 6'9, he has ample height for a NBA power forward, and combines that with a good frame that should continue to fill out, a long wingspan (appearing to be somewhere in the 7-foot territory), and solid athletic ability. He is a fluid athlete who plays above the rim with ease, is very light on his feet, and runs the floor with impressive speed.

Offensively, Hernangomez gets his production in a variety of different ways, be it as a spot-up shooter, as a cutter/pick and roll finisher, crashing the offensive glass, or running the floor in transition. His offensive versatility hints at being able to play both forward spots down the road, which is a highly coveted skill in the NBA at this point in time.

NBA Draft Prospect of the Week: Juan Hernangomez

Davide Bortoluzzi, NBAdraft.net (12/23/15)
NBA Comparison: Victor Claver/Jonas Jerebko
Strengths: This past summer he worked a lot on his upper body, becoming stronger and developing a solid frame ... His improvement has been effective since it has been accomplished without losing any mobility and explosiveness ... As a 6-9 PF, he has good size for the role, combined with excellent mobility and quickness ... His game perfectly suits the evolution of modern basketball, with the need for big men able to switch in the P&R and hit shots from distance ... Hernangomez is excellent in P&R, perfectly exploiting his ability to screen and slide with timing and quickness ... He has shown intriguing range from 15-20 feet, opening the court in pick and pop situations and creating space in the middle of the area ... He has shown the ability to attack the basket when served in movement after the cut, often drawing contacts and + 1 situations ... What impresses the most about him is his stamina, he’s constantly moving, hustling for a rebound or a loose ball, finding ways to impact his team, even when not directly involved in the offense ... He shots 75% from free throw line, solid and an improvable percentage.

Weaknesses: He still has to work on his offensive skills, as he lacks a solid traditional post game ... He still struggles in taking position back to the basket and using his pivot foot ... Lacks a solid hook shot and he needs to work on his ability to create space using his body in the painted area ... He has to work on his shot mechanics and to develop his range behind the three point line, his next step to become a modern stretch forward ... His energy is impressive, but sometimes he lacks focus and discipline, especially on the defensive side, where he has to improve the positioning ... He often plays for the steal and he puts a lot of energy and effort, but this sometimes puts him out of position or in mismatch situations.
