The Clippers are 1-0 since getting rid of Chris Paul...

...the new era of Clippers basketball is off to a good start.

I missed the game, but from what I read on Twitter and seen from the highlights, Brice and Thornwell played well and are getting praise. My boy, Kendall Marshall, seems to be getting props as well. I'm not sure there will be room for him on the roster, but I still want him as our 3rd point guard.

Lonzo Ball's playmaking and passing have been on display despite his lacking defense, but none of that is really a surprise. I hope to watch the remaining Las Vegas summer league games.

Thornwell was really aggressive. And Brice was giving the Lakers the business. That spin cycle and dunk on Lonzo

my question is whether we can get thornwell to play high level nba defense against actual high level players. one day will come for us to see, though.

Ball Busters

Post#26 » by Ranma » Sat Jul 8, 2017 8:50 pm

While I have been critical of the Clippers using a first-round pick to draft Brice Johnson, I have also been a fan who advocated early on to give him consideration for that very same selection. The thing that appeals to me about Johnson is his production and motor when it gets going. The key word is "when" given that he's had issues with getting motivated or even lacking confidence at times. He was described as someone who needed tough love but last preseason, he seemed to withraw and fold up when things weren't going his way instead of working through them. However, he also showed versatility and flashed some impressive finesse skills in practice. It's a matter of getting consistency out of him and translating his ability onto the court during NBA games, which hasn't been helped by Doc's penchant for not giving rookies playing time. His performance in the first game of summer league is certainly an encouraging sign.

I want to touch on a couple of the Lakers' young prospects. I want to remind everyone that I went on record to say that I thought that only Brandon Ingram was worthy of consideration for the 1st overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft. While Ingram was raw and Ben Simmons was the more natural talent, Simmons's attitude and approach reminded me of Lamar Odom as someone taking his ability for granted. Ingram may not have been the more advanced or even talented project, but he showed more determination and intangibles than Simmons that had me more confident in him. Unfortunately, I see some similar mental vulnerabilities in Brice as I do in Simmons, so I hope our coaching and developmental staff can help him to mature into the player he is capable of becoming. If I recall correctly, Michael Wilbon likened him to a young Rasheed Wallace and notably stated that he wanted him over any college player during that draft year including both Simmons and Ingram. I can't say that I agree with that but I certainly do like him and have wanted him on the Clippers as a prospect albeit with the preference as a second-round selection.

I also want to say that I like Lonzo Ball's playmaking, court vision, and passing but my concerns about his shot and defense were on full display in his first appearance in summer league. Obviously, it's only the beginning but the kid certainly needs to work on fleshing out the rest of his game to become the leader Magic wants him to be.

Lonzo Ball scored 5 points on 2-for-15 shooting in his NBA Summer League debut. His worst shooting night at UCLA was 29% (2-for-7) against Arizona on March 10 in Pac-12 Tournament, and he never attempted more than nine three-pointers in a college game.

We better find out soon, though, as he's another older prospect with limited upside. That doesn't mean he can't improve as he adjusts to the NBA, but like Bullock and Wilcox before him, he would be a wasted asset if he doesn't get some experience for us to see what we got in him. At least the G-League is an avenue that will provide regular playing time for him.

Brice did most of his damage in the post against Ingram. Don't think he'll be able to punk grown men like that. Showed a nice stroke from the elbow, just like in college, and had a sweet spin move to the hole from there he used twice.

Thornwell posted up and drew a ton of fouls. I just don't see how he can get away with that against real NBAers at only 6'5". I liked Jawun's quickness in a brief cameo, but especially standing next to the long, long Lakers, they both seem really puny and why they lasted deep into the 2nd round.

Kendall Marshall QBed the team just fine and even had a classic Chris Paul bonehead mishandle that almost handed the game tho the fLakers with 5 seconds left. Classic Clipper ball.

Wish I had better news, but the only takeaway was that Brice came out of his year-long defensive stupor in the 2nd half [including Orlando SL last year] and had a couple blocks and a steal. He might earn some minutes this year. At best, he looked sorta like Nowitzki except of course without the 3-ball.

Gotta give credit to the mostly Laker fans, who had the place rockin'. But in fairness, not a lot for Clippers fans to go shlep out to the desert, to see what they can see in Ontario in a couple months.

But most of the 4s in the league are really 3s in disguise. I think our length may help us. He may not be able to back down a KAT but if he's on the block against Melo? Why not?

Is Melo a good example of a defender? :D

But seriously, I see your point. Stretch 4s will probably be as light as him. But let's see what he does against somebody beefier than Ingram.
