Teodosic Signals Lottery Year
With Chris Paul, they're guaranteed a playoff ticket. They've made the playoffs every year under him from the 2012 lockout season to 2017.
Without Chris Paul, they've only made the playoffs 4 times out of 27 years (33 years if you count the San Diego years, 41 including Buffalo Braves era). That's a 14% probability, probably one of the lowest, if not THE lowest in league history.
Entering the post-Paul era, it will be very painful for the Clippers this year. Blake Griffin is out until December; Danilo Gallinari has an injury history. Clippers could be back in the lottery this year. Realizing this, Jerry West may have convinced Steve Ballmer to push toward an entertainment package. They'll lose a lot of games, but their entertainment alone could be a boon in reclaiming the trust of casual and dedicated basketball fans out there, not to mention the officials who've personally rigged games against them following Chris Paul's criticism of Lauren Holtkamp in the 2014-15 season.
Furthermore, remember that it is the entertainment factor that swayed Chris Paul into considering the Clippers as his fallback option after David Stern vetoed the Laker trade as payback for failing to 3-peat and the vicious clothesline Andrew Bynum struck at J.J. Barea in their inevitable sweep by the Mavs.
In the meantime, let's see if lightning strikes twice.

Option for Team Control Beyond 1 Season
nickhx2 wrote:oh interesting. how does him being an RFA work out though, like we wouldn't have his bird rights or the RFA thing works for us anyway? i'm so confused
While Teodosic has a player option for that 2nd year presumably just in case he doesn't win the starting PG job, the Clippers have the right to match an offer sheet from another team he'd sign with provided we give him a qualifying offer.
I assume he's given the same treatment as a second-round selection since those do not require guaranteed contracts but allow for the team to retain him by matching offers for him once their first contract expires. The advantage for second-round picks is their earning power is not limited to a salary scale, but rarely sometimes pay off better compared to a first-round contract. Think Michael Redd, Chandler Parsons, or more aptly Gilbert Arenas.

Maybe. I updated my post above, but remember Golden State could not match Washington's offer sheet for Gilbert Arenas because the Warriors couldn't use exceptions to go over the cap to retain second-rounders even though it was allowed for first-rounders at the time. The new CBA might allow for this now, but I don't think it should matter unless Teodosic becomes a superstar in one season in the NBA.
I'm going to have to defer to TucsonClip and other cap experts on this.

that is a pretty good deal. we didnt use our full MLE, I think we'll have another couple of million left. It is a pretty low risk/low cost signing given that it is only a 2 year deal.
IF he does really well, we can match any offers he'll get next year too.

yeah, I guess they were for a season. they played against eachother a few times when Teodosic was with CSKA and Beverley was with Spartak.

I'm going to have to defer to TusconClip and other cap experts on this.
The issue with the Arenas Rule RFAs, was that teams would basically take a giant cap increase after the first year on the player's contract if matching. For example, last summer the Heat matched the Nets offer on Tyler Johnson. Johnson's salary will jump from $5.8 this season to $19.2 next season. That wont be an issue under the new CBA.
This basically gives the advantage to Tedosic, and allows us to match whatever offer he receives next summer. It was a win-win for everyone. Not to mention, we still have around $2.4M of our non-taxpayer MLE left, to add another player above the minimum. Reports indicating we are now after Willie Reed, whom I like. Think a smaller, lesser version of DJ. Good on the glass, plays defense, blocks shots, long, athletic.
Plus, why would I want to go to the NBA? Duke players suck in the pros.

If even Bill Simmons, the ultimate Clipper hater, can't find a reason to hate on this signing, you know it's a good move. And I think Woj likes it. I've never seen him tweet this much about any personnel move before.

Re: Milos Teodosic signs 2year/12.3mil deal
Boy did we suck. Still do, acc to the experts but not as much.
LA CLIPPERS WINS WIN% PLAYOFFS CONFERENCE SEED
w/o Teodosic 39.3 47.90% 38.50% 9
w/ Teodosic 42.2 51.50% 59.40% 7
IMPACT 2.9 3.50% 20.90% 2
As you can see, the Clippers are now projected to be the No. 7 seed in the West, whereas they were set to miss the playoffs without Teodosic. It remains to be seen whether the 30-year-old will make a splash in the NBA, but the expectations appear to be high.

Milos with Blake & Gallo on the horns.
