One thing Warriors announcers repeated a lot on Sunday was that the Clippers had no rim protection.

When they were lighting it up from 3, only way Warriors kept close was go to the rim, get easy looks there or draw fouls.

Clippers have to be looking at acquiring more defensive centers? Harrell is an energizer but doesn’t seem to have the length to consistently turn away shots at the rim. And presumably Gortat is gone after this season unless he’s willing to take the minimum?

I was never a fan of paying DJ that kind of money. but also predicted we'd miss him more than we'd expect for just this reason. This is maybe a top-4 seed if he's still here.

Getting Both Kawhi & KD by Trading Gallo

Post#203 » by Ranma » Thu Dec 27, 2018 2:19 am

I can't read the referenced article since it's behind a pay wall and I'm not a subscriber but it seems to talk about the plan to sign both Leonard and Durant by going the route I've previously proposed of trading away Gallo. Personally, I've grown less interested in getting Durant.

Kawhi still remains my top priority this off-season but Anthony Davis has now become my preferred choice as a partner to pair him with even though it would likely require a trade of significant assets to acquire AD. Obviously, there's no way the Clippers organization will turn down a Kawhi & Durant duo if it presents itself this summer and, if Davis were to be made available on the trade market by the Pelicans, the Lakers and Celtics are the clear favorites to land him given their respective assets.

Right now, I'm more inclined to sign Kawhi and re-sign Tobias Harris this summer and maybe pursue Khris Middleton. The hope is that Davis would be dealt around next season's trade deadline. By then, we could offer Tobias and/or Middleton along with other trade pieces.

Buha Lays Out Dream Scenario in Free Agency

Post#205 » by Ranma » Fri Dec 28, 2018 12:32 pm

I signed up for the 7-day free trial with The Athletic in order to read the article written by Jovan Buha referenced in the tweet in the post before the one directly above this one.

While the first of his four scenarios is labeled as "the best-case scenario for the Clippers", Buha himself seems to think that his 3rd scenario of signing just one of Kawhi or Durant along with re-signing Tobias is actually the better option since it affords us the depth that we're accustomed to while adding a premier free agent. However, that scenario still includes renouncing Beverley and still stretching Bradley's buyout option but it's obviously worthwhile since it clears the glut in the backcourt without losing Lou and retains the ability to use the non-taxpayer mid-level exception and bi-annual exception as well.

Buha also confirms my suspicion of the possibility of signing both Kawhi and Durant along with re-signing Tobias being dependent on, among other things, trading away Gallo. In any case, I listed the first scenario since it's the most involved and easiest to work down from in coming up with alternate scenarios in terms of identifying specific players to retain and acquire this off-season.

As I've mentioned before, I've grown increasingly inclined to sign just Kawhi and retaining Tobias with eyes toward possibly involving ourselves in the Anthony Davis sweepstakes. Even without AD factored in, just adding Kawhi to what we basically have along with a couple of avenues to pursue other lower-level free agents would serve us well in terms of improving and contending.

Pelicans Quite the Albatross

Tom Haberstroh, NBCsports.com (1/3/19)
In August 2017, the Saints made national headlines after firing two orthopedists following a misdiagnosis of cornerback Delvin Breaux’s broken leg as a bone bruise. One of those fired physicians, Dr. Misty Suri, was serving dual roles with the Saints and the Pelicans.

At the time, Saints coach Sean Payton explained the dismissal by saying, “I think it’s not one event, it probably builds up over a period of time. You’re not gonna bat a thousand here, but you’re just hoping that more often than not, you’re getting the right information.”

Despite being let go by the Saints, Dr. Suri maintained his position as the Director of Medical Services and Head Team Physician for the Pelicans. He has been there ever since, overseeing this rough spate of injuries.

The Pelicans have every right to be nervous about Davis’ future.

It’s the smallest market in the NBA, which is no small thing for a global star like Davis. He fired his New Orleans-based agent and hired LeBron’s agent and then LeBron courted him, creating a media firestorm. His tenure with the organization has been marred by a poor track record with injuries and public disagreements about diagnoses. David Stern’s comment added insult to injury.

Drafting and development ftw.

My Goodness.
If Kawhi aint coming...my word...the pool is a little smaller because....yeah...keep Jimmy Butler’s 30 year old Thibs worn body and attitude away from our Clips.

Passing Along Questionable Butler Rumor

Post#213 » by Ranma » Sat Jan 12, 2019 6:10 am

"Scoop B" Robinson is a wannabe reporter who seems to be somewhat connected, however, he's like NBAdraft.net compared to Zach Lowe as Draft Express in terms of credibility. In any case, he notes that Butler is still interested in joining the Clippers, which I think is very plausible given that I actually believe that he wants to star in Los Angeles. That doesn't mean the Clippers would be interested in him unless we strike out on most of our other options in free agency, which makes it all the more important that we secure Kawhi this summer.

As I've said before, I'd be more interested in signing Kawhi and bringing back Tobias and Gallo. Butler would be a fallback option and maybe an asset to eventually use to acquire Anthony Davis, but that is about the extent of my interest in Jimmy B. as he's not a true max-worthy player.

So, AD just requested a trade. There hasn't been a player as good as him on the market since... what, Shaq maybe? And we don't have crap to offer. If we weren't doing this futile race for the 9th seed, we could offer them a package centered around this year's pick disguised as a pick-swap, a bunch of veterans and some future picks, but we can't cause it's either going to Boston or 14th. Apparently we're focused on getting swept in the first round, building around Tobias, and some wild dream of pairing Durant and Kawhi with him. While the best player that's actually changing teams in a decade is about to go to the Lakers.

I think our front office is smart, but I also think they're going in the wrongest direction they could choose. Hope I'm wrong, but I can't really see this team getting out of mediocrity in the next 5-8 years.

An AD trade would be hype, but I think the Pelicans will wait until July and trade him to Boston.

It's still early. I'd be shocked if LAC doesn't look into AD.

They can look as intensely as they want, you can give them a blank check of everything we have, and we still don't come close to the best 15 offers they're gonna get this week.

He is clearly trying to force his way to the Lakers, that's the only reason he's taking the press hit of asking for a trade in the short period the Celtics can't trade for him. Now the Pels have to decide if they want to wait until the summer and have the Celtics and whoever drafted Zion enter the bidding, or trade him before his disgruntled ass kills this season for them. I'd go for plan A for sure, but this is Dell Demps we're talking about.
