Except... it's not. The fact remains that we underperformed with respect to expectations last season, so this offers us a means of analyzing the talent and fit of the roster sans the coach.

Kawhi Leonard is the best basketball player in the NBA. Kevin Durant is #2, KD is the more profilic scorer. Kawhi is the more efficient scorer.

Anyway, I say that to say this. We had the best player in basketball and we didn't meet expectations. Doc Managed to make the best player in basketball look like he was Dorian Finney-smith in key stretches of the game because his offense was so janky and didn't coach personalities. Ty lue does a better job of telling players to get the ball in the hands of Kawhi/PG in closing moments of the game.

So if fans want to be petty, allow it. No one is knocking on doc's door telling him he's trash. No one is harassing his family here. People are venting. That's what discussion boards are for. This policing and sanctimonious BS about being above it all , well good for the people that are. Don't comment in this thread. It's not meant for them if they feel that way.

I know exactly how you feel. I've been a fan of this team ever since they drafted D Manning. Since then we've had very few exciting teams to actually cheer for.
I was one of the many Doc haters here and I felt that he did a piss poor job and I could never understand this respect Doc commanded as a coach. I felt he underperformed with the Boston big 3 when they were in their prime.
When I watch CP3, Blake etc have success elsewhere, it reminds me of what could have been with a better coach. It is a bitter pill to swallow.
The funny thing is we're not even wishing bad on Doc. It's the fact that Doc IS THAT BAD that he's doing exactly what we all already knew.
But I'd just say this one thing that right now we should enjoy this team and its grit and the way it's grinding out of tough situations. We have to overcome Utah and take that baby step into the conference finals. Doc and his failures will always be there to come back to.

I am not taking it the wrong way.

I just hate the arrogant policing by some fans here.

We get it. Some of them have moved on, good for them. There's no right answer here.

Like you said, most of the comments of doc are pointing out his failures. They're not as malicious as some want to paint it.

I was a doc defender on this board for much of the regular season. I didn't think he was a great coach. But I thought to myself there's no way he's going to mess up kawhi Leonard and Paul George. He might make it harder than it was supposed to be like how he did with the Celtics but I thought at the end of the day, we would get the job done.

Boy was I wrong. I saw doc ruined two of my favorite players legacy's. Well, put a blemish I should say. Tmac in Orlando and kawhi on the clippers.

I never seen a guy get so much mileage off one ring! That one ring has extended his career for another thirteen years.

The 2008 Celtics in general have milked that one ring harder than any team since the Miracle Mets, and Doc is the worst offender.

Of course, the difference between them and the Miracle Mets is that the Celtics were overwhelming favorites, didn't look remotely impressive while winning said ring, and should have won more than they did, which makes it way more obnoxious.

It's projecting.

The same ones saying move on from Doc are the ones who have literally NEVER EVER stopped keeping score on this group for any disagreement (player) that has left this organization....whether it be from protecting Avery Bradley, apologizing for Jeff Green's suckiness in our uniform. We have to live with their commentary on these old issues whenever they feel like it. Now that Doc is in a bad spot, others are supposed to do them a solid and not mention it.

that's what I thought last year was going to look like.

The celtics went seven games in the first round against like the 8th seed iirc. I expected that level of bad, but ultimately get to promise land despite looking bad. Having Kawhi Leonard is like having MJ or Kobe, so I expected him to bail us out a little bit, but man...I was so damn wrong. No one has escaped how bad doc can make star players and HOFers look. No body. Not Tmac, who arguably was on Kobe's level back in the Orlando days, Not Chris/Griffin, Not Kawhi. No one dude.

I took last years loss bad. Not as bad as the media made it out to be though. Sh-t, I didn't know the clippers losing would have become as viral as it became. Everyone had the lakers as the favorites, though a lot of people talked about an LA showdown. Some of the hot take videos have millions of views.

But yeah, to those people saying move on and get over it. I think its fair to allow people to feel how they want to feel about what some view as the biggest chokejob in clippers history. I don't think it is. I don't think the clippers choked. I don't assign much of any blame to the clippers. I assign it to Doc rivers, 100% of it. I'm sorry but he's the common denominator.

for most fans it's cathartic to discuss a coach who has held the team back in some of the biggest moments, for many years. and it's not like this doesn't have its own thread, it does.

for doc supporters they will never understand, but in terms of actual recent events, this is the first time that doc has not been able to dodge rightful criticism and judgment. it's vindication for so many of us, not pettiness.

if you don't like it, don't click on the damn thread. or do like i do and block people with stupid opinions that are a complete waste of my time. i mean that's what i do and it works out pretty god damn well

I've been watching sports for a long time. I have never experienced what I experienced as bad as last year time in the bubble. That was painful. I always wonder why do fans cry for a silly game? I was on that verge, I'll be honest. That was PAINNNNNFUUUL. All the investment in the team, staying up late on the east coast watching late night games, planning around this team, I mean damn. It makes you question everything as a fan. I stayed away from much of the internet other than clipper places. Damn, it was bad man. There's losing and then there's giving it away. The clippers did the latter.

I haven't been a clipper fan as long as some of you guys here, so you guys have seen this story multiple times over.

And these people are saying you cannot b-tch about it on some sanctimonious BS.

Respectfully to those people, bug off.

It wasn't just the 8th seed. That Hawks team was under .500! It was their first playoff appearance since the Steve Smith/Mookie Blaylock days. Then they lost the first two games by 23 and 19 respectively, and it looked like an easy sweep for the Celtics. And then Doc happened.

Josh Smith was on that Hawks team, too. It's easy to understand why he sees #The3-1Bum for who he really is as a coach. Those Hawks also had Joe Johnson, the same guy Doc thought Jamal Crawford could guard.

the way some of these sanctimonious characters are talking, you'd think that Doc is brought up everyday, Doc is on the forefront of clippers basketball.

This thread was bumped from Feb 2021. It's June now. It's not as deep as some people are making it sound. They made it sound like people wake up with a doc hard on and the only way to climax is to sh-t on doc.

Weird thinking, but whatever.

The thread was bumped up because of the relative success we're having against the number 1 team in the NBA mind you, without the best player in the NBA and how doc is having failure against a middle of the pack NBA team in the hawks. The contrast in coaching styles. It's an interesting talking point as you mentioned.

These people want to police everything. They should take their own advice, shut up and move on and stay out of the thread. If they want to police fan reaction, I'm policing right back and say stay out.

Another thing about that Hawks series: that was Doc's first playoff series win ever. Before that: gentleman's swept by the Bucks in '01 with T-Mac playing out of his mind, gentleman's swept by a mediocre Hornets team in '02 (with a 4th-quarter chokejob in Game 1, an overtime meltdown in Game 3, and a blowout loss at home in Game 4), blew his first 3-1 lead to the Pistons in '03, choked to the dysfunctional 6th-seeded Pacers and lost Game 7 by 27 points at home in '05.

The Bucks were just better, so you can't criticize Doc too much for that series, but the other three were vintage playoff Doc. It's mindblowing to think that Doc has never changed at all in 22 seasons as a coach despite constant historic playoff failures.

Yes his milking the only ring is right but I think he milked the DTS saga even more. And the height of milking was in the bubble when he turned into an activist more and a coach less. He seemed more eager to give an activist speech than actually coach the team. Most questions he answered ended in some form of activism. But I am glad Ballmer saw through that.

here are the key times when/where doc is ever brought up:

- when ty lue was hired, to compare
- when the season first began and we began to see the differences, to compare
- when lue made adjustments in the playoffs that doc never would have, to compare
- when he butchered two big leads again in the playoffs this last week, to justify the decision to move on

it's not deep, and sure there were times many of us got emotional or angry, myself included. but i can't think of anyone here who makes doc rivers their "everything." as a forum, we have long moved on, but we also haven't forgotten.

I've been away from this board for so long that I have forgotten we even had this discussion. I can tell you honestly that after watching Ty make adjustment after another to overcome the Mavs, then taking back the lead of this series without Kawhi in that pivotal game 5, Ty is clearly the better coach of the two... as we all watched Doc's team blow back to back huge leads, unable to observe and adjust on the fly with clearly better talented roster. What Doc was known for, and even I had bought into at one point, was that Doc is an extremely talented motivator. Well He couldn't motivate PG in the bubble could he? Tactically, at this point Ty is a notch above Doc. I used to think that the only reason why Ty got a ring as a coach was because of Lebron and Kyrie, but now I have a whole different perspective and respect for Ty as a legit top flight coach. We are lucky to have him.

Now let's go beat these Jazz tonight!

PS-They really should return their team name back to New Orleans. there are no damn Jazz culture in Utah and the Pelicans name just blows. I know it's their state bird and all but New Orleans Jazz just sounds and looks right.

I would like to nominate this for the most ridiculous thread award. Here we are six hours before potentially the biggest game in Clippers history, and we have a spirited discussion of what a putz Doc is/was... our EX-coach.. and NO FREAKING GAME THREAD! Unbelievable.

in a thread that is specifically meant for its own purpose with its own scope of discussion, and then making the thread about something else entirely: which is to complain about not having a game thread, when you could just put it up yourself

Yup, I like Kelphus, but this is what I mean by policing. Just make the game thread and stay out of this thread if it bothers you so much.

Return to Los Angeles Clippers
