Can we do this like yesterday?

Pair the 22 n 33 n move up
Use the 23.

Summary of Doc Talk with Petros & Money (My Comments in Orange)

  • Doc says people think it's easy to just sign anyone in free agency for any amount of money.
  • Downplays chances of drafting good player with low draft position that is not in the top 10.
  • Having said that, thinks draft is deep in talent for rotational players (not starters) to maybe 31 or even 33 picks.
  • There seems to be opportunity to move up the draft board with teams having multiple picks.
  • Clippers aiming to draft 1 or 2 players today...maybe even 3. Who knows?
  • Says should always draft best player available; only go for need when prospects are comparable in talent and value.

That's as much as I can recall right now. It's funny how he talks about fans having the wrong expectations with free agency when he's the one signing and trading for players thinking they're the same player or better from when he's seen them as coach for the Celtics or Magic. Further, his espousing the BPA philosophy doesn't ring true given his previous picks in Bullock and Wilcox.

However, he is saying the right things now whereas before he was more open to his disdain for draft picks in general, so the hope is that he's finally learned something with regards to the draft. The increase in pre-draft activity is an encouraging sign. Also, is his brief mention of possibly having 3 picks today, which indicates that we're considering acquiring more picks in addition to move up the draft board.

Also, I just came across this pre-draft interview he held with the media on Facebook:

Edit: Doc reiterates the same talkings points in the Facebook video as he mentioned on the Petros & Money show, however, he clarified while there is a scenario where we can have 3 draft picks today, it's not something he's really looking forward to because he feels we're competing for a championship and playing 3 young players or rookies isn't conducive to that. He is now saying he defers to scouts to draft players because he doesn't personally spend as much time viewing and evaluating them as they do. Claims he's said that during his days in Boston (under Ainge where he didn't have final say BTW), but if I recall correctly, he seemed to claim more ownership in being hands-on with the Clippers' draft (and other matters) when he arrived here. Sure, he mentioned that he'll rely on the scouts' input but he took more ownership of fitting players into his system. Now seems to be a different story for Doc speaking out of both sides of his mouth.

In any case, there are encouraging signs that he recognizes the importance of this draft and is even going on record that he likes the players in our range even if he does have lowered expectations for rookies. It also sounds like we have a deal on the table where we end up with 3 picks overall, but that he's still looking for better offers.

I never thought Thon Maker would be the 10th pick in this draft

Bucks Throw Haymaker with Thon Maker Pick

I agree. That's a huge reach for Maker and I actually like him. He'll be at least a good role player with his height and character makeup but he's quite a ways away, but he is not projected to have star potential just yet. He's a great player to have on your D-League team, which is why I didn't want the Clippers to take him in the 1st round given that we currently don't have an affiliate in the NBDL on top of wasting value in such a selection.

Domantas Sabonis will go to Orlando, so there's one guy I like off the board, not counting Brandon Ingram.

Jakob Poeltl = tall Walker Buehler.

Ranma and Neddy would understand that one.

Pop could have had this attitude in 2011 when his starts were in their mid 30s.

Instead he adds Kawhi and they stay competitive all through his Big 3's mid 30s.

This gives me no confidence we will develop a player under Doc.

Sh*t Atlanta is taking Prince with the 12th pick, so much for the hope of snatching him at 25 :(
