Timberwolves expected to offer Kevin Love $70 million

Minnesota Timberwolves All-Star Kevin Love can look forward to a contract extension offer of six years in the $70 million range once a new NBA labor deal is reached, a little birdie says.

The NBA's collective bargaining agreement expires June 30.

Love, 22, can become a restricted free agent after the 2012-2013 season. The Wolves have no intention of letting him get that far.

Love, who is being paid $4.61 million this season and is signed for $6.1 million next season, leads the NBA in rebounding (15.5 average) and double-doubles (56, five more than Oklahoma City's Blake Griffin :nonono:), and ranks 18th in scoring with a 20.9-point average.

Love said Tuesday evening that he likes Minnesota and hopes to remain here.

But, he cautioned about his future with the Wolves, "whatever happens, happens. It's up to the front office, (president) David Kahn, the coaches and (owner) Glen Taylor. It's going to be on them."

While in Los Angeles the other day for the NBA All-Star Game, Taylor hosted a dinner for Love and his family. Taylor feels he has a good relationship with Love.

"We have to start winning, of course, and the contract has to be right," Love said. "From there, things have to work out."

There's no guarantee that there will even be 6 year contracts in the new CBA. I doubt it, since one of the main reasons that teams have suffered so badly is for giving out bad contracts that last forever. Shorter contracts protect franchises from making horrible decisions and also give players flexibility to get out of bad situations quicker.

With EJ also up for an extension, looking at what Love is being offered could gauge what we can possibly expect for EJ.

It looks like Kevin Love's double/double streak will come to an end tonight, he is out of the game in Golden State with 6 points on the night, less than 3 minutes remaining. The Warriors were not a likely team to stop the streak.

I honestly thought his streak would never end. Love ended up with 6 points and 12 rebounds. I thought the rebounds would be harder for him to get, but I guess it was the scoring.

Here's a 'Around the NBA' comment- what's with the news headline about the Wizards (or anyone else) wanting to build a team using the OKC 'model'?

You mean, draft really well and do a good job in talent assessment and acquisition? What a 'model'.

^These days teams don't have much patience. So everyone is just trying to sign the big free agents. I was always in favor of drafting well and developing your players. This just doesn't happen too much anymore. Teams are not given the time to let their players develop. You also see rookies getting traded more. It is really a win now day and age.

The Timberwolves lost by over 30 at home today against the Sacramento Kings, who played minus Tyreke Evans. Kevin Love left the game in the 1st half and didn't return with a groin injury. Hopefully this type of loss doesn't cost either Rambis or Kahn their job, I'd like to see both of them remain in place through 2012 until their pick comes over.

I read that Rambis was on the outs after this season. Sampson was the rumored hire, but they have a couple of assistants (i.e. Laimbeer & Theus) that could also be in play for that team. I think that they're going to improve as a team between now and 2012, but they still have a ways to go before they start hurdling teams in the win column. Wherever their 2012 pick falls, there should be a nice player for us that can help the team.

The Cavs get their revenge against LeBron James. They were up by about 20 during the game and wound up winning 102-90.

The Cavs were the hungrier team. Miami manned up and erased the 20 point lead, but the Cavs were able to close it out while the Heat went cold. Cavs had a bad season overall, but did manage to beat the Celtics, Lakers and now the Heat.

After the game, Stu Jackson called in to talk to Kamla, McHale and Webber to discuss the shot clock situation at the end of the 3rd quarter. Jackson went on to say that the refs messed up the call. Kamla later went on to say that officiating in the NBA is the best that it's ever been. I was rolling. Even if that's true, it's not saying much at all.

I mentioned in the game thread about Dominique Wilkins being attacked after last night's game from a fan/former ref.

Here's a picture of his attacker.

Nique looks like he's got a mean right hand. None of that slapping stuff from him. I read the story about how the attacker claimed Wilkins didn't pay for some suits he bought from his store. That kind of reminds me of when Juwan Howard was accused of stealing a pair of sunglasses.

Nique has nice sized hands. He was throwing down thunderous dunks like BG in his day. He was all about power as opposed to finesse. Add that in with a serious reach and Rashan Mischel was crazy for attempting to get into a fist fight with him.

Z-Bo got his wish. He and the Grizzlies have agreed to a 4 year/$71M extension with $66M guaranteed. The final year is a player option.

Approx. $17.75M per season. I'm happy for Zach, but that's a lot of money for the Grizz. Marc Gasol is up next.

It looks like Adelman is out as Rockets coach. I would love for us to go after him. Maybe we should have let Dun finish out his contract instead of signing VDN for 3 years.

I was thinking that Adelman was let go 1 year too late for us. He does a great job with little talent. I'm surprised the Rockets let him go. He will do a good job where ever he goes next.
