Forget Doc - We have Ty
Ty Lue has done an amazing job despite injuries. He has developed 3d level players into respectable starters. The team has grit, as all the comebacks attest. And the front office killed it this year with the Portland deal by taking advantage of their salary dump. Doc is yesterday's news and a convenient whipping boy. I know we're bored until the playoff games start but if we can't shift this to a Ty Lue appreciation thread, I like TVD's suggestion of a V Stiviano appreciation thread - that skank unwittingly changed the course of the worst franchise in sports history.

I thought that report was hilarious, isn't Doc signed for 3 more years with Philly? Who came up with the report?
I can't comment on what exactly was going on in Orlando then, but Big Ben had his first shot as a slotted in consistent starter with Doc. Even on a tragic Washington team the previous season, he played 22 mpg the first 33 games and started 3 of them, and it was only in the final 13 games of the season where he got big minutes and was a full time starter. I'm not really going to go at a coach for being the first coach to consistent start a player because he didn't then post that guy 30+ mpg on a poor fit roster. Choosing a 28 year old over a 25 year old is not a big deal, and Bo Outlaw if you remember was actually a similar style player to Ben, but more versatile positionally as he could play 3/4/5.
Rumor has it he's out in Philly if they have a bad post season as he's not Darrel Morey's guy at all. Its just shocking that other teams will be interested in him as their head coach. But they way things look, he'll always have a head coaching job no matter what he does or how his teams perform when the lights are bright

Except Outlaw fell off a cliff immediately after they let Ben go and they ended up dumping him at the start of the following season for an over-the-hill Jud Buechler. (Funnily enough, it was a three-team deal that also sent VDN to the Clippers.) Meanwhile, Ben became a superstar in Detroit. It was an obvious blunder no matter how you spin it. They had benefited from the Wizards' stupidity in letting Wallace get away only to turn around and make the same mistake themselves.
For sure. Hindsight is 20/20, but I'm not arguing that Outlaw had a better career, but Doc was only a coach in Orlando, not front office. Outlaw was already signed to a long term deal.
Ben was a free agent and so was Atkins. The Magic prepped their roster that season to make a push for McGrady, Duncan and Hill. The Magic offered Ben a contract, but the Pistons offered Ben $28-30 million and Orlando while they would have liked to keep him were not willing to play that much for him. It had nothing to do with Doc's coaching or preference for players.
They then worked a multiple sign and trade of Ben and Atkins to get a 26/7/5 Grant Hill. Of course if Grant Hill who at that point barely missed games didn't have a horrible stretch of injuries and complications, trading Ben Wallace for Grant Hill is not as big a deal.
No one predicted Hill's career would be derialed or that Ben would become a 4* All-star and DPOY, if others predicted Ben's rise, the Pistons offer would not have been his only other offer outside of Orlando.

Damn you and your facts, G. Doc had him for ONE YEAR and made him a full-time starter. His per-36 numbers remained the same after the trade. There is no actual factual point being raised here.

Of course, totally ignored is the far more relevant matter of the QUANTUM leap Deandre Jordan made when Doc took over the Clippers. That's how this game is played.

Same old Glenn, same old meltdowns. He really thought having Tobias Harris guard Siakam was going to work

First round exit is very possible if they're stuck facing Toronto, which looks likely.

- Is James Harden declining, playing through injury, or is it both? It’s probably both. We knew he was going to be a facilitator when he came here, and he’s absolutely delivered on that, but they need at least something in the scoring department to be competitive. He doesn’t have to go for 25 a night, but if Tobias Harris is gonna be a max contract bystander, then you need more than 13 from Harden. You need more than 12. Shi*t, if Danny Green wasn’t unconscious from three in this game, they would have lost by double digits.

Re: Doc out!!!!!!!!!
So Rivers was asked what has been the reason Toronto seems to have had their number this season?
"I don't think they have," the coach said.
He was reminded that Toronto won three of the four games.
"I still don't think they have," he said. "But if you think that, that's fine. Like I said before the game, we will roll it up with anybody that wants us in the first round. And that's how we feel."

Way to give bulletin board material to a Raptors team that's already a nightmare matchup for you, Doc. The memes will be amazing.

But we do know that come playoffs, Doc often coaches the opposing team.

Re: Doc out!!!!!!!!!
Looks like Glenn has found his scapegoat for this season. Now, I don't mind it in this instance because Harden himself has thrown so many other players under the bus in his career, so he deserves to get a taste of his own medicine. But Doc keeps doing the same things every year and the results never change.

Re: Doc out!!!!!!!!!
What a classless thing to say about your own player - after a win where he played well, no less. Doc can't stand the fact that for the first time ever in his career, the local reporters are asking tough questions and not letting him get away with his BS. He's lashing out like a two-year-old who didn't get the toy he wanted.
Basically, Doc will not admit he was wrong all season (what else is new?) and washed-up DJ will be getting the backup center minutes in the playoffs, perhaps just to spite the reporters and fans who want him to play Reed instead. For the record, this is what DJ looks like nowadays when he's out there:
Nick Nurse is licking his chops right now. Easiest coaching matchup of his career coming soon.

Re: Doc out!!!!!!!!!
It's stunning how the worst coach in NBA history can be this condescending:
Every reporter he's talking down to could probably do his job better than him, as sad as that is.

Re: Doc out!!!!!!!!!
it's the coach's fault lol
There's actually a decent chance Doc will get fired: with no bench and starter Matisse Thybulle banned from Canada for the Raptors series over vaccination issues, a first-round loss is quite possible especially with Harden stinking up the joint. Also the rabid Negadelphia media hates him--and the feeling is mutual. [They got Gabe Kapler's scalp--now the very successful manager of the Giants.]
- After shooting 59.2 percent in his first four games as a 76er, Harden is at 36.6 percent in his last 12. That ranks 137th out of 145 players who've taken at least 100 shots since March 7. He's shot better than exactly eight NBA players since March 7.

Harden looks totally washed at this point and the trade isn't looking very good. His next contract will be even uglier than the trade. No doubt, he will deserve his fair share of blame if/when the Sixers flame out early, as will Morey.
That being said, it's not Harden's fault that Glenn is a clown who doesn't make adjustments, who favors washed veterans over superior younger players to a fault, and who destroys locker room morale by playing favorites and throwing players under the bus to avoid taking any criticism himself. Let's not forget that Harden is a Sixer right now in large part because Doc threw Simmons under the bus after choking to the Hawks last year and irreparably ruined his relationship with the team, forcing them to trade him.
Once again, when the same exact patterns have played out over and over again in four different cities, in both conferences, with a ton of different players/owners/GMs and the same coach, it's nonsensical to keep putting all the blame on everyone but the coach. Blaming everyone else might fly after one or two failures, but not after 22 years of consistent failures where he's the lone common denominator.
