Good grief. I've previously argued with Raptors fans that part of the reason the Clippers hold a more promising position outside of geography is because of the salary-cap flexibility to make space for 2 max-level free agents this summer during the most anticipated of all free-agency periods.

The Raptors can't significantly participate in free agency until next off-season at the earliest and that is unlikely to change even if Kawhi leaves Toronto. Spotrac currently lists the Raptors as having -$5,937,915 in practical cap space right now even with Kawhi not listed as having a cap hold on the roster. Even if they lose Danny Green to free agency, that would only leave them with maybe $4 million $9 million in salary-cap space to use not counting exceptions.

However, if they renounce Lucas Nogueira's cap hold, that might leave them with around $12 million $21 million to play with, which is still not much, relatively speaking, in terms of pursuing max-level free agents. Let's also not forget that until Kawhi decides one way or the other, the Raptors cannot sign anyone when there will likely be a flurry of activity in the opening hours of free agency.

I'm no salary cap expert, so I might be missing something, but I'm fairly confident that the Raptors can't engage in a big free-agent signing without making trade(s) to clear out salary...Kawhi or no Kawhi.
