And Jimmy is at least partially responsible for this historic level of dysfunction. So yeah, no thanks on trading for him.

Probably. But Kobe was a pr*ck too, and LeBron was very open about expressing his disgust at the shortcomings of his Cav teammates. It goes with the territory when a team is underperforming. As much as CP3 was the same way, maybe he should have been MORE outspoken about Blake and DJ's sometimes lax approach to the game.
It's easy to repeat the prevailing narrative, but the only profit comes when you don't run with the herd. Thibs liked Butler well enough to bring him over to the Wolves, and the more you learn about KAT, the less you get concerned about Jimmy.

Darren Wolfson of 1500 ESPN:Code: Select all
They’re offering [KAT] as much money as they can.
I’m led to believe that a big reason why he hasn’t signed it is that he – through his agent, Leon Rose – went to the Wolves and said, “Hey, I can’t coexist with Jimmy. Do something about it.” So, Figure out the Jimmy situation. On top of that – whether it’s right or wrong, this is the way he feels – that it’s been Jimmy and Thibs ganging up on him.
Towns can sometimes play passively, especially defensively. Two people who tend not to tolerate passive play, especially defensively, are Jimmy Butler and Tom Thibodeau. I’m not sure they’re ganging up on Towns as much as they’re each conveying similar messages individually.
That said, I can also see why Towns would feel like they’re ganging up on him.
Thibs is disgusted with KAT too. It's not just Jimmy. And then of course there's Wiggins, who's more of the same.
That said, I really don't want to build around a 30-yr-old either. OTOH, if we can steal him, and sign him for something more like 4 yr/$125M, I'm interested.

Yeah, but LeBron is the GOAT, and the Lakers usually had better players and/or stacked rosters to carry Kobe. Winning tends to cover up a lot of flaws. And honestly, LeBron has the patience of a saint for the teams he had to play with over the years in Cleveland.
In contrast, Jimmy Butler is so far from being the GOAT, it's not even funny, and he would not be joining a stacked roster on the Clippers. He's more along the lines of CP3, and we all saw how that era worked out for us. The whole "I'm the only one who cares about winning, my teammates don't work hard" shtick doesn't work if you're not winning rings. It just creates a negative environment and drama.
Thibs is disgusted with KAT too. It's not just Jimmy.
Thibs will also say anything to shift the blame away from his own failure as GM/coach, so there's that.

Maybe. I don't know. That's why we hired Lee Jenkins, to get the inside poop. I somewhat agree about this maybe being similar to the CP3 situation. But in the end, the problem was Blake and DJ, not Chris.
The point is that so far, the enemies Jimmy has made don't bother me.

Stop right there.. Butler is no Kobe nor LeBron. Those guys put teams on their backs and are world champions.

Actually, we were agreeing [!] it's more like CP3. In my view, it's what you do about the Blakes and the KATs with all the ability in the world but don't seem to have the fire in the belly. You can win a title with players like Chris or Jimmy who bust ass on both ends of the floor [at least as your #2], no problem. Blake or KAT, I'm not so sure.
On a sliding scale with their talent, Kobe was also a much bigger pr*ck than Jimmy or CP. But the real point is that he couldn't do anything with a dog like Dwight Howard. The key here is that it wasn't just Butler--Thibs is at his wits' end with those guys too.

Out of curiosity, what FA's do you even want? Seems you have a bone to pick with nearly every player who's rumored with the Clippers.

As I said in another thread, the front office should already be getting prepared for the Giannis Sweepstakes in a couple years. In the meantime, there's no point in spending a ton of money on B-list stars like Jimmy Butler while the Warriors juggernaut exists. Just keep patiently building until the right opportunity comes along.

Wolves fan here.
Curious about the plans for Gallinari. Are they just going to stretch him next year? Was wondering about a Dieng-Gallo swap in any potential Butler trade. It would save you roughly 5mil next year at the cost of an extra season of Dieng but I was thinking you could likely save more by stretching Gallo next year instead.

Yet Another Reminder of Folly in Jeff Green Trade
For all the Doc apologists who still defend the Jeff Green trade despite common sense dictating otherwise even at the time of the deal, trading the lottery-protected pick for less than half a season of practically guaranteed mediocrity out of Green cost us the opportunity to package such a pick along with non-essential assets for a season of Jimmy Butler in his prime during a contract year. As Bobby Marks has cited, the Clippers cannot deal a future first-rounder until 2022 due to the Stepien Rule.
Full disclosure, I'm generally not in favor of trading first-rounders for rentals on principle, but between the two propositions, one is clearly more promising than the other: Butler for those who are still confused on the matter.
I'm not even advocating signing Butler to a max contract as a condition of a trade since it is actually more favorable for us to see how Butler fits on the team before we even consider extending him. Plus, trading for him without the guarantee of an extension should lower the cost to acquire him on top of the turmoil given the dysfunction with the Timberwolves right now. Not to mention that it's generally accepted that Butler is not a worthy max player compared to the likes of Durant, LeBron, Antetokounmpo, et al.
Per the HoopsHype podcast, Butler loves being in LA and has been known to hang out with Mark Wahlberg, which a minus in my book. He named the Clippers along with the Nets and Knicks specifically because those 3 teams will be able to offer 2 max signing slots and are all in major media markets.
Part of the reason for Butler's trade request was because Minnesota--presumably ownership--was unwilling to offer him a max deal, which is no surprise since Butler is considered a part of a group of players, which includes Luol Deng, Joakim Noah and Derrick Rose, who have been worn down by Thibodeau's intense demands for extensive playing time.
A possible silver lining in all of this for the Clippers and Doc, specifically, could be Thibs being fired mid-season or soon after and not securing another head coaching opportunity in the NBA given his worn-out reputation, which could lead to him working with Doc again as defensive assistant coach to recapture their glory days with the Clippers.

Can the Clippers call the Timberwolves to tell the Timberwolves not to call us anymore?

Except that Jerry West went about the business of building a championship team, not wasting three years and praying for monkeys to fly out his butt.
He's not going to do it now, either.

The “hope to include Dieng” things baffles me. You’ve got a player who has trade value but is in his final year—which means you lose him for nothing in ten months—and you “hope to include” a horrible contract that runs for two years after this season? It makes me think the T-Wolves are kinda delusional.
Anyway I’ve got no serious take on Butler-as-Cancer theories. He’s had problems with teammates and front offices. So have a lot of players. Can’t tell if it’s deserved, tho’ I do think it underscores that he’s not a #1 guy for a championship level team. It’s not a red flag…more of a yellow flag. The age, missing games, thinking he’s worth the max…those are the red flags.
One thing that’s occurred to me is that this is also a (stupid, but kinda understandable) way of finding out his value before the season ends. Players and (especially!) their agents overvalue themselves. If the T-Wolves don’t get some serious value offers, that’s got to tell Butler that he’s very very unlikely to get anything like a max deal.

Exactly. Jerry West patiently waited for the right opportunity for a big move and built through the draft in the meantime. He didn't lurch at the first win-now move that became available. Quite the contrary - he refused to trade Klay Thompson for Kevin Love, a move that looked ridiculous at the time but turned out to be the right decision after all.
Basically, Jerry made the Warriors a winner by doing the exact opposite of what you want the Clippers to do.

Unresponsive to anything I actually wrote. I only want Butler if we get him in trade for spare parts and can sign him for less than the max.
And I wouldn't have traded for Kevin Love either.
Your plan to wait 3 years for Giannis in the hopes that he sours on Milwaukee, decides he doesn't hate LA after all, and that we'll outbid the other dozen teams who will be making a run at him is to be charitable, unrealistic at best.
