David Geffen wants to buy controlling interest of Clippers?

An impeccable source reveals David Geffen is hot to buy 51 percent of the Clippers. Friday night, the billionaire co-founder of the zaftig film-making company, had dinner in Los Angeles with Donald Sterling to discuss just that.

For the sake of argument, surely Sterling must understand, by giving way to Geffen, his constellation, which often IS dying in the corner of the sky, would greatly illuminate and increase in value -- should the record-company big shot be able to recruit LeBron like he signed Bob Dylan and the Eagles.

In fact, Geffen has been deep in the hunt for quite some time. My source claims he told Sterling he can deliver LeBron as long as he's calling the shots.

Maverick Carter, who sits at the right hand of James in all business ventures, was next to the Lakers' bench alongside Geffen.

I don't know this for a fact, but my source suggested Stern's meeting "more likely centered on whether Sterling would be willing to sell 49 percent of the team and how much it'd take for him to give up control."

NY Post

Keep in mind who the source is...the NY Post and more importantly, Peter Vecsey. It is interesting nonetheless.

Wow, someone else owning the majority of the team and calling the shots while Sterling isn't?

That would be awesome.

Though, like you've said, it's the NY Post and Vescey and we at least should take that with a grain of salt.

Why would Sterling sell now? Sterling has had many chances in the past to sell or move the Clips to Anaheim, he has refused. Isn't Sterling still getting a tax break for donating the Staples Center land?
Geffen is a smart business man but, nothing is ever rock solid until the contract is signed. The best place foe James to make a name (music, show biz, West Coast) is the Clips. Lebron in my books is #2 behind Kobe & will always be #2 until he can win. Why not come to Kobe's town and take over the glitz & lights?

Delivering Lebron James on the pretense of owning 51% of the Clippers is a pretty bold statement. We shall see.

I don't know if other really high-profile guys have offered to buy 51% of the team from Sterling before. By keeping 49%, Sterling still gets to maintain a lot of the benefits of full ownership. And having a high-profile partner would increase the value and standing of the franchise.

Most reports have stated he has not moved to Anaheim (despite strong fan support there) because HE personally wants to stay in Los Angeles, rather than go to Anaheim for games, etc.

I don't take this as anything but the faintest of rumors, but it would be great if it happened.

This doesn't make much sense. James doesn't need Geffen to make his mark in show business nor does he need to live in LA. Thus, two significant premises rationalizing this entire line of thinking are questionable out of the gates. I think you'll see James in a Heat uniform next year.

We've been saying that the only time the Clippers will start winning is when someone else owns the team... here's our opportunity! In addition to that, Geffen provides the music industry connections, Baron provides the movie industry connections + Jessica Alba, Frankie Muniz provides the TV industry connections, and Lebron can become the media mogul he wants to be. :D

No marquee FA is going to want to sign up with Sterling as the boss man.

If Sterling sells controlling interest to someone else, then there's at least a chance.

As much as I want this to happen, you also have to realize that Peter Vescey is writing this article. But please god, I hope this is true. Geffen owning this team could go a far way to become a relevant franchise.

I know we'd all like Sterling to see the team, it would be nice if he wasn't the majority owner.

David Geffen has no personal interest in owning the Clippers, but his boyfriend Jeremy Lingvall has urged him to look into purchasing a minority stake, according to a source that spoke with SportsByBrooks.

Geffen did meet with Maverick Carter on Sunday, but the Clippers was not the main subject of conversation, according to a source.

very interesting.

Baron
Gordon
LeBron
Griffin/Udoh
Kaman/Jordan

Wow. That's a great core, imo (I'm a big Ekpe Udoh fan; reminds me of Okafor minus the back problems and with a bit better shot). Round out with the ~$5M in cap space left over and you've got yourself a title contender/favorite.

Put it this way: if you compare that possible Clippers team to this year's Cavs team at every position other than sf, the LA player is highly preferable as a long-term teammate.

pg: Baron (when motivated, as he would be) > Mo Williams
sg: Gordon > Anthony Parker (better and waaaay younger)
sf: Lebron
pf: Griffin > Jamison (yes this is a projection; and again, way younger)
c: Kaman > old man Shaq
