Eric Gordon....

Post#1 » by DWCP2 » Fri Feb 25, 2011 10:16 pm

Question from Indiana fan here.

With the Mayo trade having failed and Indiana still in the hunt for not only a PF but also a wing mate opposite Granger, it's being suggested around here the Pacers target Eric Gordon and would have the space to offer a MAX or near MAX contract to him.

How far would you guys go to keep Gordon in a Clippers uniform or would you let him go in favor of building around Griffin slower?

EJ is a Clipper, will be a Clipper & whatever you offer we will match.
You think Blake Griffin is slow??????? Go watch Blake live, then tell me he is slow.
The Clips are being built around Blake & E.J.; not one , but both guys

The Clippers have two cornerstones.
Those are Blake Griffin and Eric Gordon.

Our management knows that and just gave away an unprotected first round pick to gain more financial flexibility because we need to re-sign DeAndre Jordan this summer and and extend EJ.

He's also only in his third season, which means he'll be under contract another year and a RFA in the summer of 2012.

I know you guys like him because he's from Indiana, but you can just about forget about that one(you nearly got Mayo and should go after him again this summer), as he's going nowhere.

BTW: Building around Griffin slower?
What the heck should that be?
If we were to let Gordon leave then Griffin would be gone soon as well.

Clippers will match whatever money is thrown at Gordon. You're just gonna have to wait until 2017 to have a realistic shot at him.

Or 2012 if he only accepts the teams qualifying offer and goes UFA.

The Clippers will do everything in their power to keep Eric Gordon. We just traded away Baron and our pick. We are dedicated to Blake Griffin and Eric Gordon.
I've been an LA Clipper fan since 1998 and that will never change. I hate our new logo and jerseys!

Realistically, NBA stars don't leave after their 4 year rookie contracts end. They always sign that 1st big deal with the team that drafted them and leave with an early termination after 3 years. The Clippers can offer an extension to Gordon after this season, while other teams have to wait one more year when he is a restricted free agent (which the Clippers can match). Gordon would have to not accept an extension after year 3 or year 4, which is obviously risky, to be an unrestricted free agent after year 5.

All the guys that have switched teams recently:
Lebron
Bosh
Carmelo

have done so after 7+ years.

Gordon would have to pass up on an extension by the Clippers this summer and pass on an extension from any other team the summer of 2012 and sign only the qualify to be a UFA in the summer of 2013. Players don't do this. It's too risky. Stars always sign the 1st big contract, with an early temination, with the team that drafted them. The NBA has set it up so that financially it doesn't make sense to leave the team that drafted them for 7 years.

The FO is focused on building around Griffin, Gordon and Jordan (to a certain extent). The moves that they have made fully support that belief. Both Griffin and Gordon took over the reins early in the season and know that this is their team going forward. I'm sure that Gordon will be heavily sought after in the free-agent market, be it from Indiana or any other team with cap space. The guy is a talented young player with a great head on shoulders. I would prefer to see us sign him to an extension this offeseason, but we'll still have at least another season to get it right.

I know that Indiana fans have their sights set on him, and that Gordon would love to be back in his home state if he wasn't here. This team needs to add another significant piece and then we'll be able to do some big things. Everything is in order for that to happen, we just have to execute when the opportunity presents itself. I'm sure that EJ would lovee to be a part of that. He's not about the nonsense, he is a competitor that wants to work hard and win games.

Man, the nerve of the original poster. This isn't NBA fantasy-land, where you can just go to any team, and select whichever player you want. In that case, we'll be taking Granger from you.

Rookies typically sign the first extension from their teams anyway.

I'm sure the new CBA will make it harder for players to leave their teams as well, which should help us retain EJ.

What do you think EJs contract will be? Something like 4y/50M?

Depends on how the new CBA will look like.

Though, under the current one 5 years and something around $60 mil would be needed to re-sign him.
